Afternote Local 2.0.0-beta.5
Afternote Local is a free Mac beta for notes you explicitly choose to save. Remember something in Codex, Claude Code, or Claude Desktop, then find the same note in another approved tool or in the native app.
Included local search
Search by meaning is enabled by default in Notes and approved connected tools. The app includes its verified embedding and reranking models; there is no separate model download or model choice. Search runs on your Mac. Turn it off in Settings to use exact search while keeping your notes intact.
Normal upgrades reuse valid note embeddings. Beta 5 fixes background preparation getting stuck at a complete note count, updates readiness automatically, and includes the sustained-use owner-control and direct revocation fixes from the private beta builds.
Beta notice and privacy
Afternote Local is independently maintained, best-effort software. Support and maintenance have no guaranteed response or fix schedule. Keep independent backups and check recalled information against its source.
Read the Local beta notice, Apache 2.0 license, and Local privacy notice. The license contains warranty disclaimers and limitations of liability, subject to applicable law; the notice preserves rights that cannot lawfully be excluded. The original hosted service has separate terms.
Install
Requires Apple Silicon and macOS 13.3 or newer. Download the DMG and SHA256SUMS below, verify them, drag Afternote into Applications, eject the installer, and open the installed app. No Afternote account, Bun, or Node installation is needed. Existing users can replace the app without deleting their vault or Keychain items.
Installation and verification · Connector setup
Privacy and access
Notes are stored in an encrypted local vault. Each connector is separately approved and revocable; connectors do not receive the vault encryption key. Recalled note text is returned to the connected AI host and may be processed by its provider. Afternote collects no app usage telemetry. Signed update checks use the network.
The app source is Apache-2.0. Included models carry their own terms and notices, available inside the app and its signed license inventory.
Beta limits
Recall can miss relevant notes or return related notes that do not answer the question; inspect the cited original. MCP recall currently omits search-mode status. While semantic search is preparing or unavailable, a connected host may receive exact-search results without recognizing the fallback. Check Notes for “Search by meaning ready”; an empty result alone does not establish that no relevant note exists.
This beta has passed automated release gates and targeted founder acceptance on a second Mac. It is not a claim of comprehensive non-founder, clean-account, every-host, or every-approval-path validation. Evidence and coverage limits.

Afternote Local 2.0.0-alpha.25
Afternote Local Alpha 25
One encrypted note vault on your Mac, shared through separately authorized connections to Codex, Claude Code, and Claude Desktop. Save something deliberately, then recall it in a later conversation with a reference to the saved note.
Download and install
Download afternote-local-2.0.0-alpha.25-darwin-arm64.dmg and SHA256SUMS below. Requires Apple Silicon and macOS 13.3 or newer. No Afternote account is required. This is an early alpha, not a stable 2.0 release.
From the folder containing both files, run shasum -a 256 -c SHA256SUMS. Open the DMG, drag Afternote to Applications, eject the image, and open Afternote from Applications. Existing users should export their notes before upgrading and quit Afternote before replacing the app. Do not uninstall or reset the vault to upgrade.
First-run and connector instructions · Release verification
Changes since the previous public Alpha 22
- Centered Connections layout, aligned action columns, and quieter repair controls.
- Explicit ownership for native connection rendering, note editing, retrieval state, schema upgrades, audit-history reads, and broker request routing, with focused behavioral tests.
- Fresh owner-approved reconnect preparation for all three supported hosts. Revoked identities, grants, and sessions remain revoked.
- A durable Reconnect prepared state that survives refresh and app relaunch until the replacement pairs. Failed or delayed status replies cannot re-enable duplicate preparation.
- Clear instructions to finish reconnecting in the AI host, plus expanded first-run and verification documentation.
Verification and limits
The exact release artifact passed Developer ID signing, Apple notarization, stapling, Gatekeeper assessment, and checksum/image verification. Release gates passed: 596 tests, 9 explicit skips, zero failures; the separate 10,000-note performance gate; dependency audit; and 19 package lifecycle checks. The founder also completed the reconnect acceptance workflow on a second Mac. This is not independent security certification.
Exact and date-aware retrieval are the defaults. Local semantic retrieval is optional. The vault and search run on your Mac, but recalled text is returned to the connected AI host and may be processed by its provider. Signed update checks and explicitly requested model downloads use the network. No browser, Slack, Windows, or Intel Mac support is included.

Afternote Local 2.0.0-alpha.22
Alpha 22 fixes Claude Desktop attribution when Claude routes Afternote through its bundled Claude Code process and signed disclaimer helper. It supports both verified two-level and three-level launch layouts without relying on machine-specific paths or process IDs.
Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 13.3 or newer are supported. Download the DMG and SHA256SUMS together and verify the checksum before installation.

Afternote Local 2.0.0-alpha.17
Alpha 17 is the recovery release for the withdrawn Alpha 16 build.
Alpha 16 signed the vault worker with the wrong Keychain access group. The vault correctly failed closed, but upgraded installations could no longer read their existing installation-bound key. Alpha 17 restores the original vault access group and makes that group a property of the worker's signed role, not release-operator input. The release pipeline now inspects the finished worker and client-signer entitlements before notarization.
This release also refreshes Claude Desktop's saved and recalled counts when Afternote returns to the foreground.
If Alpha 16 shows "Vault key unavailable," install Alpha 17 over it. Do not reset the vault or delete its Keychain item.

Afternote Local 2.0.0-alpha.15
Alpha 15 adds Claude Desktop support and fixes the rough edges we found in its first real-world test. Codex, Claude Code, and Claude Desktop now share the routine-authentication window you choose, even when the broker restarts. Connection counts refresh without another Touch ID prompt, and Claude Desktop saves carry verified connector attribution instead of model-supplied metadata.
This is still an early alpha for Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 13.3 or newer. Download the DMG and SHA256SUMS together, then follow docs/VERIFY_RELEASE.md before installing.
Afternote Local 2.0.0-alpha.13
Alpha 13 fixes one specific upgrade edge case: existing Codex and Claude Code sessions now reconnect after the native broker restarts. If the vault is locked, the connector reports that state instead of a stale XPC transport error. Remember remains single-attempt across an ambiguous transport failure, preventing an automatic retry from creating a duplicate note. This is an early alpha for Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 13.3 or newer. Download the DMG and SHA256SUMS together, then follow docs/VERIFY_RELEASE.md before installing.
