AHEAD 3T High-Resolution Multi-Shell Diffusion MRI Dataset
Amsterdam Ultra-high Field Adult Lifespan Database
This release provides the 3T diffusion MRI component of the Amsterdam Ultra-high field adult lifespan database (AHEAD). The dataset includes high-resolution, multi-shell, whole-brain diffusion MRI from healthy adults spanning a wide adult age range, and is intended to support studies of structural connectivity and brain aging across the lifespan.
The data were released to facilitate methodological development and neuroscientific investigations requiring high-quality diffusion MRI with sufficient angular and shell sampling.
Dataset Overview
- Dataset title: A high-resolution multi-shell 3T diffusion magnetic resonance imaging dataset as part of the Amsterdam Ultra-high field adult lifespan database (AHEAD)
- DOI: https://doi.org/10.21942/uva.16884703
- Release date: 2021-10-28
- Author: M.C. Keuken
- Total size: 24.2 GB
- Participants: 49 healthy adults
- Age range: 18–90 years
- Research area: Brain & Cognition
Imaging Summary
This dataset contains 1.28 mm isotropic whole-brain diffusion MRI acquired at 3 Tesla.
Diffusion scheme
- b = 700 s/mm²: 48 directions
- b = 1000 s/mm²: 56 directions
- b = 1600 s/mm²: 64 directions
- b = 0 s/mm²: 12 volumes
- Reversed phase-encoding b0 volumes: 8 volumes for distortion correction
This combination provides a multi-shell, multi-directional diffusion acquisition suitable for tensor fitting, higher-order reconstruction, tractography, and microstructure modeling.
Preprocessing Included
To facilitate reuse, the released diffusion data were already processed with standard correction steps:
- Denoising
- Eddy current correction
- Susceptibility-induced distortion correction
- Bias field correction
- Skull stripping
These preprocessing steps make the dataset suitable for downstream analyses without requiring users to start from raw diffusion volumes.
Scientific Use
The AHEAD 3T diffusion MRI dataset is suitable for:
- Lifespan studies of white matter organization
- Tractography and connectome reconstruction
- Multi-shell diffusion model development
- Method benchmarking for preprocessing and reconstruction
- Aging-related analyses of structural connectivity
- Cross-dataset comparisons with other adult lifespan diffusion MRI resources
Because the sample spans early adulthood through old age, the dataset can be useful for studying age-associated trends in diffusion-derived measures and connectivity patterns.

Notes for This Repository
This repository may provide reorganized files and derivative outputs for easier use in diffusion MRI workflows. Users should still acknowledge the original AHEAD dataset and DOI in any publication or derivative work.
If derivative diffusion files are included here, they are intended to support tractography, connectometry, and reproducible diffusion analysis pipelines.
