DataJoint 2.1 Preview: PostgreSQL Support & Improved Diagrams

DataJoint 2.1 is in development!

We are excited to announce the upcoming DataJoint 2.1 release, which brings two major features:

🐘 PostgreSQL Integration

Full PostgreSQL backend support alongside MySQL. You can now choose your preferred database backend:

import datajoint as dj

# MySQL (default)
dj.config["database.backend"] = "mysql"

# PostgreSQL
dj.config["database.backend"] = "postgresql"

Or via environment variables:

export DJ_BACKEND=postgresql
export DJ_HOST=localhost
export DJ_PORT=5432

📊 Improved Diagramming

• collapse() method for high-level pipeline views
• Schema grouping for better organization
• Mermaid output support
• Enhanced display and layout

📚 Documentation

The documentation at datajoint.com/docs already reflects these changes. All 22 tutorials and how-to notebooks have been validated against PostgreSQL.

🗓️ Release Timeline

The exact release date depends on how quickly major pipelines migrate to DataJoint 2.0, allowing us to publish 2.0 on PyPI and conda-forge. We anticipate this to happen by mid-February 2026.
