Game patches

When WW-Online patches your game it can add a few optional extras: quality-of-life changes (skip the intro, instant text, Swift Sail, faster animations) and fixes for crashes and softlocks in the original game. They come from Better Wind Waker (WideBoner, brainfubar and contributors), which builds on the Wind Waker Randomizer (LagoLunatic).

Choosing patches

Pick them in the setup's Game patches step, or later in Settings, Game patches (then Patch game). WW-Online asks you to patch again whenever your choice differs from your patched game. The defaults are the bug fixes plus skipping the intro movie.

Each player chooses their own. Most patches are local only: they change your game and nobody else notices. A few change the world, and are marked All players should match: agree on those with your room, or players with different settings will see the game behave differently.

A few patches can't be combined (the three sailing wind patches all change the same thing); the app unticks the others when you pick one.

The patches

Bug fixes

  • Fix: Beedle won't buy Blue Chu Jelly (on by default). Beedle no longer buys Blue Chu Jelly, so you can't sell away the jelly Doc Bandam needs for the Blue Potion. In multiplayer: Local only: spoils bag contents never sync.
  • Fix: Grandma's soup crash (on by default). Fixes a vanilla crash when you heal Grandma after swapping your empty bottle away too quickly (she tries to say a message that doesn't exist). In multiplayer: Local only.
  • Fix: Hookshot sight crash on Helmaroc's mask (on by default). Fixes a vanilla crash when you aim the hookshot at the broken shards of Helmaroc King's mask. In multiplayer: Local only.
  • Fix: Jalhalla's Poes and Light Arrows (on by default). Jalhalla's small Poes killed with Light Arrows now count towards the fight. In multiplayer: Local only: enemies aren't synced.
  • Fix: Miniblins and Light Arrows (on by default). Miniblins killed with Light Arrows now set their death switch, like any other kill. In multiplayer: The switch it sets is world state; with shared world it syncs to everyone either way.
  • Fix: Morths that fall out of bounds (on by default). Morths that fall off the level are deleted, so rooms that wait for every enemy to die can't get stuck on one you can't reach. In multiplayer: Local only: enemies aren't synced.
  • Fix: Respawning Magtails and Light Arrows (on by default). Respawning Magtails shot in the head with Light Arrows now respawn as intended. In multiplayer: Local only: enemies aren't synced.
  • Fix: Sea memory fragmentation (on by default). Gives distant island models a fixed memory estimate so sailing fragments the game heap less, and silences a harmless console warning. In multiplayer: Local only. Helps long sessions on the sea, where puppets also use the game heap.
  • Fix: Stalfos and Light Arrows (on by default). If you cut a Stalfos in half and then kill the upper body with Light Arrows, the lower body now dies too instead of becoming unkillable (a vanilla softlock). In multiplayer: Local only: enemies aren't synced.

Combat

  • Cannons break in one boomerang hit (off by default). Wall-mounted cannons are destroyed by one boomerang hit instead of two. In multiplayer: Local only: enemies aren't synced between players.

Controls

  • Invert camera horizontal axis (off by default). Pushing the C-stick left turns the camera right, and vice versa. In multiplayer: Local only.
  • Turn while swinging (off by default). Steer left and right while swinging on a rope or the grappling hook. In multiplayer: Local only: other players' Links take their facing from the network.

Cosmetic

  • Rainbow Tingle Statue rupee (off by default). The special 500-rupee reward for the Tingle Statues cycles through every rupee colour. In multiplayer: Local only (cosmetic).

Exploration

  • Keep the Forest Haven void-out zone (off by default). The void-out zone between Forest Haven and the Forbidden Woods stays after you get Farore's Pearl, so falling on the way there puts you back at the start of the trip instead of the bottom of Forest Haven. All players should match. In multiplayer: Changes world collision behaviour for whoever has it; mixed settings mean players land in different places after the same fall.
  • Reveal full sea chart (off by default). New save files start with every square of the sea chart drawn in. Existing saves are not changed. In multiplayer: Local only: the sea chart isn't synced. Only affects saves started after patching.
  • Tingle chests without the Tingle Tuner (off by default). Normal bombs reveal Tingle chests (no Game Boy Advance link needed), and Tingle chests show on the map once you have the dungeon's compass. All players should match. In multiplayer: Changes chest behaviour: players without it can't reveal those chests themselves. Opened chests still sync through shared world as usual.

Sailing

  • Brisk Sail (off by default). Like Swift Sail, but KoRL stops even faster when you brake or fall out. The sail is renamed Brisk Sail. In multiplayer: Local only: your boat's speed and wind are yours; other players see your boat where the network puts it. Can't be combined with Swift Sail or Sail controls the wind.
  • Sail controls the wind (off by default). The wind always blows behind you while the sail is out, at normal sailing speed. In multiplayer: Local only: wind direction isn't shared. Can't be combined with Swift Sail or Brisk Sail.
  • Swift Sail (off by default). The wind always blows behind you while the sail is out, and KoRL sails twice as fast (Wind Waker HD's Swift Sail). The sail is renamed Swift Sail. In multiplayer: Local only: your boat's speed and wind are yours; other players see your boat where the network puts it. Can't be combined with Brisk Sail or Sail controls the wind.
  • Unrestricted King of Red Lions (off by default). KoRL no longer turns you back when you sail off the route the story wants (Dragon Roost, Farore's Pearl, Master Sword checks), and you can board him before seeing the Dragon Roost intro. The edge of the map still stops you. All players should match. In multiplayer: Changes where you can go before the story allows it. With shared story it keeps everyone free to follow each other; mixed settings mean some players get turned back.

Songs

  • Faster Ballad of Gales (off by default). Warping with the Ballad of Gales skips the cyclone flight cutscene. In multiplayer: Local only. Other players just see you appear at the destination.
  • No song replays (off by default). Skips the replay where Link conducts a song again after you play it. In multiplayer: Local only: only your own conducting is shortened.

Speed

  • Faster block pushing and pulling (off by default). Link pushes and pulls blocks 40% faster and each push/pull takes 12 frames instead of 20. Includes wwrando's fix for the Forsaken Fortress door this would otherwise softlock. In multiplayer: Local only; the block ends up where it would anyway.
  • Faster climbing, sidling and NPC chat zoom (off by default). Speeds up starting a climb, climbing ladders and vines, sidling along walls, and halves the camera zoom-in time when you start talking to someone. In multiplayer: Local only.
  • Faster crawling and rolling (off by default). Doubles crawling speed, and rolls start fast (20 to 26 speed instead of 0.5 to 26). In multiplayer: Local only: other players see your position from the network, not your speed.
  • Faster grappling hook (off by default). The grappling hook flies out, latches and wraps around its target much faster, like Wind Waker HD. In multiplayer: Local only.

Startup

  • Remove title and ending videos (off by default). Replaces the title-screen loop video and the ending video with a blank one (saves ~600MB of video reads; the title screen idles on a still image). In multiplayer: Local only.
  • Skip intro movie (on by default). Skips the long intro movie that plays when the game starts. In multiplayer: Local only: nothing about the intro is shared.

Text

  • B button skips text (off by default). Hold B to fast-forward dialogue: each line advances as soon as it can, instead of needing a fresh B press per line. In multiplayer: Local only.
  • Instant text boxes (off by default). Every text box appears all at once instead of letter by letter, and the scripted pauses inside messages are removed. Pairs well with "B button skips text". In multiplayer: Local only: dialogue isn't shared.

Not available yet

  • The Swift Sail and Brisk Sail sail textures (the behaviour is there, the new sail picture isn't).
  • Random enemy colours.
