Make possible to install extensions under regular user

Yesterday I have update DBeaver to v5.2.0.
After installing, it asked me to update my software extensions (Office support and SVG support).
As usual, it took a veeeeery long time to do the update and when it was about half way through (after more than 10 minutes) the lights went out.

After restarting the PC, DBeaver started up with no problems, but apparently without Office and SVG support extensions.

I tried to reinstall the Office support extension, but it stopped with an error (see below).
I tried to completely uninstall and reinstall DBeaver two times: first time it was a simple uninstall/reinstall, second time I cleaned the .eclipse directory after uninstalling and then reinstalled.

Each time I tried to install the Office support extension, I got the same error:

I am out of ideas. I could delete the .dbeaver4 directory too, but I would not want to lose all my connections, and I'm not even sure it would help.

How do I fix this problem?
I am on linux openSUSE Tumbleweed, if it is of any help.

Please see Issue #4110. I had the same issue with a previous upgrade. I had to do 2 things:

1. Delete the artifacts.xml file from your DBeaver location
2. Be sure to run DBeaver with administrator permissions by using 'Run as Administrator' (not sure how this is in Linux)

First problem: there is no artifacts.xml file under ~/.dbeaver4. On the other hand, I have several "artifacts.xml" files under ~/.eclipse:

At first I tried to delete the ./org.jkiss.dbeaver.product_5.2.0_620785679_linux_gtk_x86_64/artifacts.xml file, but it did not work.
So I deleted both the artifacts.xml files under the ~/.eclipse/org.jkiss.dbeaver.product_5.2.0_620785679_linux_gtk_x86_64 directory... it did not work, too.

About the "run as administrator" hint... I don't know if this is applicable to linux. I don't think so. Under linux, the equivalent thing would be to run dbeaver with "sudo", but that would run dbeaver under the context of the root user, so it would be a completely different thing.
I did not even try it as it would make no sense (and I don't want to run any random software as root, btw).

The only relevant one may be /usr/share/dbeaver/p2/org.eclipse.equinox.p2.core/cache/artifacts.xml, which is the system-wide equivalent of the file in my .eclipse directory.

I'm not sure it is a Good Thing to delete that one, but I may try to temporarily rename it and run DBeaver to see what happens.

I don't think that deleting workspace would help. The problem is in corrupted dbeaver installation.

artifacts.xml may appear in /usr/share/dbeaver folder (or in other folder where you have dbeaver installed), not in the workspace.

And BTW what do you mean by "workspace"? Do you mean the .dbeaver4 directory?
Should I delete it? And , if so, is there a way to save my connections?

Workspace is the place where all your configuration, connections, scripts, etc are stored. By default it is folder .dbeaver4 in your user home.

What you need to do is to delete file artifacts.xml in dbeaver binaries folder (by default it is /usr/share/dbeaver on Linux machines). Or even better - delete /usr/share/dbeaver completely and install dbeaver again.

@serge-rider unfortunately I have just now verified that uninstalling dbeaver removes the /usr/share/dbeaver directory. So it is the same thing I have already done the past two times.

After uninstalling DBeaver, here is the situation of the artifacts.xml files (I also deleted the org.jkiss.dbeaver.product_5.2.0_620785679_linux_gtk_x86_64 directory in ~/.eclipse, just to be on the safe side):

I was getting the same issue and managed to resolve by running Beaver as root and copying the .metadata directory:

1. running sudo dbeaver
2. install the software extensions
3. as your user: mv $HOME/.dbeaver4/.metadata $HOME/.dbeaver4/.metadata.OLD
4. sudo cp -pr ~root/.dbeaver4/.metadata $HOME/.dbeaver4
5. sudo chown -R $USER:$USER $HOME/.dbeaver4/.metadata

I also only managed to get it working by copying .dbeaver4/.metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.core.runtime/ to my directory.

This is a workaround, though not sure the root cause?

@Cris70 Yes you should - if DBeaver was installed in a write-protected folder (like /usr/share). There is a special note about that here - https://github.com/dbeaver/dbeaver/wiki/Optional-extensions

Maybe you used zip archive or some 3rd party package in the past.

@peterhatz I don't think that you should care about root user workspace. Just run "sudo dbeaver" to install an extension and then restart it under your regular account.

Anyhow, this is not very convenient (and definitely not obvious).
Perhaps we should make /usr/share/dbeaver writable in deb installer. Although I'm not sure that this is safe enough.

@serge-rider today I tried installing the extensions under the root account (i.e. starting DBeaver with sudo) and it worked well. So I'd say the problem is somehow solved, though I'd call it more a workaround than a real solution. As you say, this is not very convenient and definitely not obvious.

I find it weird that extensions have to be installed in /usr/share/dbeaver. This way extensions are global. Wouldn't it be better to install extensions in ~/.dbeaver4 or in ~/.local/share/dbeaver ? This way extensions would be per-user, and there wouldn't be the need to install them as root.

One last remark: I am almost 100% sure I had no problem installing extensions previously with my own user. I have always used the rpm package downloaded from the DBeaver web site.
