Support matrix

What rDownloader runs on and works with, the oldest version of each that can work, and how far each combination is actually tested. Only current browser and runtime versions are supported: a minimum below is the oldest version that can work, not a promise that it is tested.

The Tested column uses these words:

  • Every change — tested automatically on every change to rDownloader.
  • Before each release — tested before a release is published, automatically or by hand as noted.
  • After each release — the published package is installed and tested once the release is out.
  • Every change to it — tested automatically whenever that part of rDownloader changes: its installer, its package or its updater.
  • Not tested yet — built or expected to work, but never run by the project. It may work; if it does not, a report is welcome.
  • Not supported — rDownloader works with it, but the project does not test the real thing and makes no promise for it. A report is still welcome.

Server

Platform Download Minimum Tested
Linux x86-64 rdownloader-linux-x86_64.tar.gz glibc 2.39: Ubuntu 24.04, Debian 13, current Fedora and Arch — not Debian 12 or Raspberry Pi OS bookworm Every change, on Ubuntu 24.04: the full test suite, crash and restart recovery, and the launchers up to a running service. Each release is also built a second time independently and compared
Linux ARM64 rdownloader-linux-aarch64.tar.gz glibc 2.39 Every change, on Ubuntu 24.04 ARM64: the launchers up to a running service. The test suite itself runs on x86-64 only
Windows x86-64 rdownloader-windows-x86_64.zip Windows 10 Every change, on Windows Server 2025: the full test suite, crash and restart recovery, and the portable server up to a running service. Windows 11: by hand before each release. Windows 10: not tested yet
Windows ARM64 — — Not built
macOS Apple Silicon rdownloader-macos-aarch64.tar.gz macOS 11 Every change, on macOS 15: the launchers up to a running service and the Homebrew install below. The test suite itself does not run on macOS
macOS Intel rdownloader-macos-x86_64.tar.gz macOS 10.12 After each release, on an Intel Mac with macOS 15: the published download installed through Homebrew and started up to a running service
Container linux/amd64 ghcr.io/degoya/rdownloader Docker or a compatible runtime; the image brings its own glibc Every change and before each release: the image starts, becomes healthy and keeps its mounts
Container linux/arm64 the same image as above; a Raspberry Pi with a 64-bit OS included Every change and before each release, on an ARM64 machine: the image starts, becomes healthy and keeps its mounts

An older Linux runs the container image; see Docker and NAS.

Desktop capture agent

Platform What it does there Tested
Windows x86-64 Tray icon, .nzb file association, rdownloader:// links, start at login Every change: storing the capture token, start at login and link registration, installed through Scoop, with the registry entries checked. The tray icon: by hand before each release
macOS Menu-bar icon, .nzb file association through its helper app, start at login Every change: the helper app and the Homebrew formula. The menu-bar icon through brew services: by hand before each release
Linux No tray icon; start at login through a systemd user unit Every change: the test suite

Starting the agent against a running service and sending a link through it is not tested automatically yet on any system. The agent itself is described on Desktop capture agent.

Browser extension and web interface

Browser Minimum Tested
Chrome, Edge and other Chromium browsers 153 Every change: the extension's own tests and build. Each release: the Chrome Web Store's and Edge Add-ons' review
Firefox 156 Every change: the same, plus Mozilla's add-on validator. Each release: the Firefox Add-ons review
The web interface A current browser Every change: type check, unit tests and build. In a real browser (Chromium): before each release

An older browser refuses to install the extension. Sending a link from the extension all the way into the LinkGrabber is not tested automatically yet; installing from either store is checked by hand before each release. See Browser extension.

External tools

Tool Minimum Tested
yt-dlp 2023.01.06 Every change: reading the tool's version, on every system; the check that refuses a too-old tool, with a stand-in tool on Linux. The real tool: only inside the container image, not tested automatically
ffmpeg, ffprobe 4.4 As for yt-dlp. The managed download from its real address has not been run yet
gallery-dl 1.25.0 As for yt-dlp
streamlink 8.2.0 As for yt-dlp
unrar (and rar) 6.12, for security Every change: the version rule, on every system; an unpack refusing a too-old tool, with a stand-in tool on Linux. The real tool: not tested yet
7z (7-Zip) 25.00, for security; p7zip is below it As for unrar
rclone None Not supported: rDownloader runs the rclone you install with four plain commands (copy, move, delete, list), tested on every change against a stand-in on Linux; a real rclone is never run by the project
PAR2 repair Built in Every change, on every system but macOS
ClamAV (clamd) None; tested against 1.5.4 Every change: the scan against a stand-in clamd, on every system but macOS; against the real clamav/clamav:1.5.4 image with the EICAR test file in CI. A clamd on a local socket: not tested automatically

What each tool is used for, the managed downloads and why the archive tools' minimums cannot be lifted: External tools.

Automation clients

Client rDownloader presents itself as Tested
Sonarr, Radarr, Lidarr, Readarr with a SABnzbd download client SABnzbd 4.3.3 Every change, on Linux and Windows: the calls these applications make, replayed against rDownloader. Against a real instance: not tested yet
Sonarr, Radarr, Lidarr, Readarr with a qBittorrent download client qBittorrent 4.6.5, Web API 2.9.3 As above
Prowlarr — Not applicable: it manages indexers and does not use a download client

Endpoint by endpoint: Automation tool compatibility.

Packages

Channel Platforms Tested
Portable archives from the GitHub release the five server platforms above Every change: the launchers of the Linux, macOS and Windows archives. Each release carries checksums, their signature and a software bill of materials
Homebrew degoya/rdownloader macOS Apple Silicon and Intel, Linux x86-64 and ARM64 Every change, on macOS: install, brew test, brew services up to a running service. After each release, on macOS Apple Silicon and Intel and on Linux x86-64 and ARM64: the published formula installed, started, upgraded from an older release with the database kept, and uninstalled with the data kept
Scoop degoya/scoop-rdownloader Windows x86-64 Every change: install, launcher, a running service, the persist folder, start at login. After each release: the published bucket, the same steps and the upgrade, as for Homebrew
Container registry ghcr.io linux/amd64, linux/arm64 See Server
Windows installer rdownloader-windows-x86_64.msi, and -de.msi, -es.msi, -fr.msi in German, Spanish and French (GitHub release) Windows x86-64, per user Every change to it, on Windows Server 2025: a silent install, the Start menu entries, the service started up to a running service, an upgrade with the start at login switched on, and an uninstall that keeps the data folder; the German installer installed silently with its German Start menu entry and removed. The installer's dialogs and a click on a Start menu entry: by hand before each release
deb and rpm packages (GitHub release) Linux x86-64 and ARM64, glibc 2.39 Every change to them, on x86-64 and on ARM64: the deb on Ubuntu 24.04 through its systemd user unit, the rpm on Fedora 44, each up to a running service, installed again over itself, and removed keeping the data; the menu entry installed and removed with the package. A click on the menu entry: by hand before each release
apt and dnf repository degoya.github.io/rdownloader-packages Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, openSUSE; x86-64 and ARM64 Every change to it: a test repository built the same way, installed, upgraded and downgraded with apt on Ubuntu 24.04 and Debian, with dnf on Fedora and with zypper on openSUSE Tumbleweed, each on x86-64 and ARM64; a repository whose signed index was altered offers nothing. The published repository itself: not tested yet
winget degoya.rDownloader Windows x86-64 Every change to it, on Windows Server 2025: the package validated and installed against a published release, started from PATH up to a running service with the database in the package folder, and uninstalled keeping it; on request, an upgrade from an older release keeping the database and data. Each stable release is submitted to the winget community repository, whose review publishes it

A beta goes to the GitHub release — archives, installer and packages — and the container registry only; Homebrew, Scoop, winget, the apt and dnf repository and the browser stores carry stable releases. How to install from each: Installation.

Updates

Every installation checks for new versions; which ones install an update themselves, and how far that is tested. What the update does: Updates.

Installation Installs an update itself Tested
Portable archive, Linux x86-64 and ARM64, Windows x86-64 Yes, with Install and restart; the previous version comes back if the new one does not start Every change to it, on Ubuntu 24.04 (x86-64 and ARM64) and Windows Server 2025: a real update to the next version, a new version that ends at once and one that answers as unhealthy — both taken back. An interruption at each step of the switch: every change
Portable archive, macOS Yes, the same way Not tested yet, by decision: the macOS test machines cost ten times the others
Windows installer Yes; the first update after installing by hand cannot be taken back by itself, and the dialog says so By hand before each release; the service's side every change
deb and rpm packages No — the dialog shows the apt or dnf command Every change
Homebrew, Scoop, winget, the container image No — the dialog shows the package manager's or the container's command Every change
