qrate v0.2.0-alpha.1

The second alpha. It adds validation, plugins, file previews, spell checking, export,
and a read-only agent bridge. This is alpha software. Keep a backup of your data.

What is new

Validation and the Problems panel

  • Column validators with cell squiggles, and a Problems panel that lists every finding.
  • Built-in authority checks against LCSH, Wikidata, and GeoNames. Each column picks its authority.
  • EDTF date checks, including sets and lists.
  • A column declares its data type and how loud it reports a problem.
  • A row reports a linked file that is not there.
  • Any producer can offer a correction. Filter the panel by the producer that found the problem.

Spell checking

  • A Hunspell spell checker with a user dictionary and a per-column toggle.
  • Canadian and American English ship with the app. Download any of 92 more from Settings.
  • Fixes from the cell menu and from the Problems panel.

Plugins

  • A Luau plugin host. A plugin declares permissions, settings, storage, and column mappings.
  • Plugins run off the user interface thread, add bar items, and read HTTP over qrate.http.get.
  • The Islandora plugin now lives in its own repository.

File previews

  • Thumbnails and a viewer for images, PDF, video, and archive file types.
  • Page through a multi-page document or a multi-image TIFF.
  • Search a PDF for text. The viewer marks each hit on the page.
  • Scrub through a video without leaving the app.
  • Zoom from the keyboard. The thumbnail cache stops at 2 GB.

The grid

  • Undo and redo, multi-cell copy and paste, and column freezing.
  • Add and remove rows and columns. Select several items at once.
  • Find and replace from the find bar. Filter a column by sub-delimited values.
  • Notes on an item, more than one, each with the name of the person who filed it.

Panels and windows

  • A gallery view over the row images, sized by cards per row.
  • A Details panel that edits fields in place and describes a whole selection.
  • Panels declare their own bar button and move between docks.
  • One title bar and status bar style on every window.

Import and export

  • Export a project as CSV, JSON-LD, CSL-JSON, or a ZIP archive.
  • Sync to a Google Sheet you choose. Every Google surface waits behind an opt-in consent gate.

Agents

  • A read-only agent bridge over loopback, turned on in Settings.
  • An agent stages review findings as drafts. The bridge cannot write a cell.
  • The Agent panel shows the traffic.

Other

  • A session log, a panic hook, and Help items that copy debug information.
  • Linux builds. A new application icon. qrate is licensed under AGPL-3.0.

Downloads

  • Windows: *-setup.exe (installer) or *-x86_64.zip (portable)
  • macOS: *-universal.dmg (Intel and Apple Silicon)
  • Linux: *-x86_64-linux.tar.gz (Wayland and X11, needs a Vulkan driver)

Preview binaries

Every download includes PDFium, so PDF previews need no extra setup.

Video previews and the JPEG 2000, AVIF, and HEIC formats need ffmpeg. The Windows
downloads include it. On macOS and Linux, install it and qrate finds it on your PATH:

Without ffmpeg, those files show a file-type icon. No other function changes.

Note

These builds are unsigned.

  • Windows: SmartScreen can report an unknown publisher. Click More info → Run anyway.
  • macOS: right-click the app and select Open the first time, or run
    xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine "/Applications/qrate.app".
