Emulator YabaSanshiro

Systems: Sega Saturn (saturn) · Runs as: homebrew NRO · Get it: devmiyax/yabause · also available as a RetroArch core (see below)

Best effort: this guide is community-maintained and may lag behind new releases. The emulator's own project (linked above) is the authoritative source — if anything here doesn't match what you see, trust their instructions.

Reality check: Saturn is one of the hardest systems to emulate, and the Switch is near the edge of what it can do. Expect this to be the fussiest emulator on the wiki — some games run well, others are slow or glitchy regardless of settings. Confirm the current Switch build status before you invest time; standalone Saturn builds come and go.

Yaba Sanshiro (a maintained fork of Yabause) is the standalone route for Sega Saturn on Switch. The same emulator is also available inside RetroArch as the YabaSanshiro core, alongside Beetle Saturn — if the standalone build is unavailable or unstable, the RetroArch cores are the fallback and are often easier to keep current.

Install

  1. Download the Switch build and extract it so you have sd:/switch/yabasanshiro/yabasanshiro.nro and its support folder.
  2. Launch once to generate config, then quit.

BIOS files

Many Saturn games run on the emulator's built-in HLE BIOS, but a real BIOS improves compatibility and is needed for some titles and for the CD player:

File Notes
saturn_bios.bin (a.k.a. sega_101.bin / mpr-17933.bin) Region-appropriate Saturn BIOS

Place it where the build's settings point (standalone: a bios/ folder next to the app; RetroArch: sd:/retroarch/cores/system/). See BIOS Files.

Point it at your HaulNX library

  1. Download Saturn games with HaulNX — they land in sd:/roms/saturn/.
  2. Open the emulator's file browser and navigate to /roms/saturn.

File formats

  • Saturn games are disc images: .cue+.bin, .chd, or .mds/.mdf. .chd is recommended for size and for keeping multi-track discs tidy.
  • Multi-disc games use an .m3u playlist — see Disc Images & Multi-Disc Games.
  • Extract any .zip wrapper HaulNX left around a disc image before loading.

Tips

  • Overclock helps a lot here — Saturn is CPU-bound and benefits from the maximum stable overclock, docked for the extra thermal headroom.
  • If a game is unplayably slow on the standalone build, try the Beetle Saturn core in RetroArch (more accurate, sometimes slower) or YabaSanshiro core (faster, less accurate) before giving up on the title.
  • Keep expectations tied to the individual game, not the system — Saturn compatibility on Switch is uneven by design.
