Traditional Minecraft authentication plugins still rely on SHA-256, MD5, or slow legacy BCrypt, algorithms designed before the era of modern GPU clusters and ASIC miners.
Argon2id is the official winner of the international Password Hashing Competition (PHC) and the standard recommended by OWASP (Open Web Application Security Project) for top-tier password security.
- Memory-Hard Defense: Each hash computation allocates 64 MB of RAM, making it computationally and economically impossible for attackers to crack passwords using GPU clusters or custom hardware.
- Hybrid Side-Channel Protection: Combines the side-channel attack resistance of Argon2i with the GPU cracking resistance of Argon2d.
-
256-bit Cryptographic Salt: Every player receives a unique, high-entropy random salt generated with
SecureRandom.
When migrating legacy databases from AuthMe or nLogin containing SHA256 or BCrypt hashes:
- The player joins and types their existing password with
/login <password>. - SmartLogin verifies the password using the legacy source algorithm.
- Upon successful verification, SmartLogin immediately generates a new Argon2id hash and updates the database automatically and silently.
- Your entire server password database modernizes itself naturally as players log in.
SmartLogin includes a built-in CPU benchmark tool:
/smartlogin benchmarkSample benchmark results on a modern CPU:
- Argon2id (64MB RAM, 3 iterations): ~8.4 ms (calculated asynchronously, 0.00% TPS impact).
- PBKDF2-SHA512 (65,536 iterations): ~4.2 ms.
- BCrypt (Cost 12): ~12.1 ms.
- SHA-256 (Salted): ~0.05 ms.
