v2.5.0

@ebrahimHakimuddin ebrahimHakimuddin released this 11 Oct 15:43

AniView is now on desktop. There are new apps for Windows, macOS and Linux, each with its own interface built for a mouse and keyboard. They include a sidebar, a show page where you can jump to any episode, a full player with keyboard shortcuts, downloads, and a window that remembers its size.

  • MyAnimeList: you can sign in with MyAnimeList as well as AniList and track your shows with either one. A paired TV uses the same account.
  • A fuller Home: new Top rated, All-time popular, Coming soon and genre rows. Continue watching is on by default, and the app opens with the AniView wordmark and greets you by name.
  • Titles your way: choose whether shows are named in Romaji or English.
  • Better downloads: each episode is saved as one MP4 with its subtitles inside, and you can seek within it. "Save to gallery" works, and deleting a download also removes its gallery copy. A failed download can be retried with the source you have open now.
  • More sources: ani.pm and AnimeStream are added and Re:Anime is removed. Extension videos, separate audio tracks and extension subtitles play like they do in Aniyomi. The source you pick for a show is remembered for next time.
  • TV: Search is now a place to browse, the show actions stay on one line, and TVs can pick from qualities they used to hide.
  • Fixes: seasons that keep counting from the last one now start at episode 1, switching themes no longer crashes, and featured art is no longer cut off under the header.

Which file?

  • Android: app-arm64-v8a-release.apk for almost every phone and TV; app-armeabi-v7a-release.apk for older 32-bit TV sticks.
  • Windows: the setup .exe. It's unsigned, so on SmartScreen choose More info → Run anyway.
  • macOS: the .dmg. It's unsigned, so right-click the app and choose Open the first time.
  • Linux: the AppImage, which needs a recent distro.

v2.5.0 beta 8 Pre-release
Pre-release

Choose a tag to compare

@ebrahimHakimuddin ebrahimHakimuddin released this 11 Oct 11:50

Pre-release for testing.

Android: this beta installs as a separate app, AniView Beta, next to AniView, so your stable install stays as it is. It doesn't update itself; install new betas from here.

  • Downloads on Android: episodes are now turned into MP4s by the same library the player uses, so they play in AniView and have sound everywhere. Episodes downloaded with beta 7 should be deleted and downloaded again.
  • Extension downloads: an extension whose playlist sits at an address without .m3u8 was saved as a few lines of text instead of the episode; it now downloads properly, and a server that sends no video says so.
  • Deleting a download also removes its copy in the gallery (Movies/AniView). Copies made by beta 7 weren't tracked, so remove those from the gallery yourself.
  • Opening animation: it fills the screen instead of a square in the corner.
  • Featured carousel (phones): the art starts below the header, so its top is no longer hidden.

Desktop builds are unsigned: Windows SmartScreen needs More info → Run anyway, and macOS needs right-click → Open. The Linux AppImage needs a recent distro.

@ebrahimHakimuddin ebrahimHakimuddin released this 11 Oct 10:50

Pre-release for testing.

Android: this beta installs as a separate app, AniView Beta, next to AniView, so your stable install stays as it is. It doesn't update itself; install new betas from here.

  • Downloads as MP4: every episode now saves as one Title - Episode N.mp4 instead of a folder of pieces. That's the file that plays offline, lands in your picked folder and goes to the gallery. On a computer this uses ffmpeg; without it installed, episodes stay as before and still play.
  • Extension downloads: extension episodes served as one whole file can be downloaded now, and resume where they stopped.
  • Subtitles: downloaded subtitles are kept in their own format (an extension's .ass was saved as WebVTT and broke offline) and copied into the MP4 as text tracks that VLC, MX Player and others show. Extension subtitles whose address has no file extension load in the player too.
  • Show titles in Romaji or English: Settings → Appearance → Show titles in. Search still finds a show by any of its names.
  • Home: Continue watching is on by default (turned on once if you'd had it off). The carousel drops Trending #n and the airing time, and the small accent labels above titles are gone everywhere.
  • Opening: the AniView wordmark draws itself in, then "Welcome back", in place of the emoji greeting.
  • Show page on phones: Wrong show? sits beside the episode order instead of on a row of its own.
  • Themes: switching between the original theme and a Material one no longer crashes with a button on screen.

Desktop builds are unsigned: Windows SmartScreen needs More info → Run anyway, and macOS needs right-click → Open. The Linux AppImage needs a recent distro.

@ebrahimHakimuddin ebrahimHakimuddin released this 11 Oct 08:40

Pre-release for testing.

Android: this beta installs as a separate app, AniView Beta, next to AniView, so your stable install stays as it is. It doesn't update itself; install new betas from here.

  • What's new: shows once. Before, it came back after you dismissed it (twice more on a computer), which could crash the Linux app.
  • Player on a computer: Skip intro/outro and Up next stay on screen when the controls come up, instead of vanishing as you reach for them. A click on the video shows or hides the controls; Space or K plays and pauses.
  • TV: pressing left at the edge of a row opens the sidebar again, and the player offers every quality the stream has (some TVs showed no quality picker). On a show's page, the actions stay on one line with ⋮ at the end, and going back up from the episodes brings the top of the page back.
  • Computer: the window opens full size the first time, then the way you left it. Sub/Dub fills its outline, the Go to episode box lines up with the page buttons beside it, and a failed download can be retried from an episode's right-click menu.
  • Downloads: an episode watched offline is remembered under the site its own download came from.
  • Pairing: pairing signs a TV in with whichever tracker the phone uses, AniList or MyAnimeList.

Desktop builds are unsigned: Windows SmartScreen needs More info → Run anyway, and macOS needs right-click → Open. The Linux AppImage needs a recent distro.

@ebrahimHakimuddin ebrahimHakimuddin released this 09 Oct 11:49

Pre-release for testing.

Android: this beta installs as a separate app, AniView Beta, next to AniView, so your stable install stays as it is. It doesn't update itself; install new betas from here.

  • Accounts: track with AniList or MyAnimeList, one at a time. Signing in to the other asks first, then switches. If you were signed in to both, the one you signed in to first stays.
  • MyAnimeList: Schedule, airing times, new-episode alerts and your stats on Me now work with a MyAnimeList list. Pairing signs a TV in with it, and rewatching is saved the way MyAnimeList keeps it.
  • Audio: extension videos whose audio comes separately play with sound, and the player has an Audio picker when there's more than one track.
  • Extensions: videos load the way Aniyomi loads them (with the source's headers, the extension's preferred video first). A Re:Anime extension installed earlier no longer adds a site.
  • Welcome: AniView greets you by name when it opens. Turn it off in Settings → Appearance.
  • Desktop: the search shortcut (Ctrl/Cmd+F) can be changed in Settings → Keyboard.

Desktop builds are unsigned: Windows SmartScreen needs More info → Run anyway, and macOS needs right-click → Open. The Linux AppImage needs a recent distro.

@ebrahimHakimuddin ebrahimHakimuddin released this 09 Oct 08:15

Pre-release for testing.

Android: this beta installs as a separate app, AniView Beta, next to AniView, so your stable install stays as it is. It doesn't update itself; install new betas from here.

  • macOS: video plays in release builds again, and browser sign-in comes back to the app. Shows opened from search keep the sidebar, and Search is on Cmd+F.
  • Windows: browser sign-in comes back to the app.
  • Desktop: the apps have AniView's icon (Mac and Windows had Flutter's), and Ctrl/Cmd shortcuts work while a video plays.
  • TV: Search opens on popular shows and previews the one you're on; posters show their title and score.
  • Home: new rows you can turn on: Top rated, All-time popular, Coming soon and genres.
  • Sign-in: AniList or MyAnimeList is offered everywhere you're asked to sign in.
  • Downloads: retrying a failed episode uses the source you have open, and downloaded files can be seeked.
  • Sources: Re:Anime has been removed.

Desktop builds are unsigned: Windows SmartScreen needs More info → Run anyway, and macOS needs right-click → Open. The Linux AppImage needs a recent distro.

Thanks to @dhruvdivecha for the macOS fixes (#3).

@ebrahimHakimuddin ebrahimHakimuddin released this 07 Oct 09:59

Pre-release for testing.

Android: this beta installs as a separate app, AniView Beta, next to AniView, so your stable install stays as it is. It doesn't update itself; install new betas from here.

  • Desktop: playing a second video no longer crashes the app, and episode titles stay readable in a narrow window.
  • AnimeStream: a season that the site numbers on from the last one now counts from episode 1, so progress is saved correctly.

Desktop builds are unsigned: Windows SmartScreen needs More info → Run anyway, and macOS needs right-click → Open. The Linux AppImage needs a recent distro.

  • Fixes from beta 1: the Android app opens again, the Linux app plays video, and streams start sooner on desktop.
  • Windows and macOS now come as an installer (.exe) and a disk image (.dmg).

v2.4.0

Choose a tag to compare

@ebrahimHakimuddin ebrahimHakimuddin released this 02 Oct 11:33
  • Follows your phone: A switch in Settings → Appearance uses your theme's light or dark version to match your phone.
  • Try another site: When a site has nothing for an episode, the player offers another one so you can keep watching.
  • Smoother going back: Home waits for the back animation to end before it reloads, and rows you've scrolled past stay built.
  • Calmer motion: With animations turned off in Android, loading placeholders and the 2× chevrons hold still. Springy overshoots are gone.
  • Steadier lists and stats: Me shows your stats when AniList leaves its breakdown empty, completing a show counts every episode, and signing out clears saves still waiting.
  • Download folder: The folder you pick applies only while Save downloads to gallery is on. Otherwise episodes stay in the app's storage.
  • What's new: The overview is now a bottom sheet with a titled entry for each change, shown once on the first launch of a version and in Settings → About → What's new.

Which APK? app-arm64-v8a-release.apk for almost every phone and TV; app-armeabi-v7a-release.apk for older 32-bit TV sticks.
