Securing SSH

After some searching on DuckDuckGo I found a website that told me that I needed to edit a parameter in the sshd_config file. So I opened it like so:

sudo nano /etc/ssh/sshd_config

And proceeded to uncomment and change the permit root login parameter to say "no" instead of "yes." Next I needed to restart the ssh service:

systemctl restart sshd

And after trying to log in via PuTTY as the root user, I got the error message "access denied"

Root User UID

You can view the UID for all of the users in the system in the /etc/passwd file, so I ran the following command:

sudo cat /etc/passwd

And found the UID for the root user to be 0, and the UID for my user, elizabeth.chadbourne, to be 1000. The UID is the first number that appears after the "x" in each entry
