Building a Good Cook
Viewer helper — plan the colonist who does not poison the colony. No Biotech xenotype is a dedicated cook. Traits from vanilla Core only.
Cooking skill is the food-poisoning stat. A 0–4 cook on a starved colony will hospitalize people. A 10+ cook with passion feeds everyone and unlocks fine / lavish meals.
Trait budgets: 4 default · 6 RICS luxury.
| Slot | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Xenotype | Baseliner | No cook gene line. Clean, no UV / fragility tax |
| Alt xenotype | Genie | Fine if they are crafter-first and cook second (poor plants — they should not farm the rice) |
| 1 | Gourmand | +4 Cooking skill (Core). Hungry and can food-binge — feed them |
| 2 | Industrious | Faster meal batches |
| 3 | Fast learner | Climb past the poison range quickly |
| 4 | Tough or Quick sleeper | Tough if they also haul; Quick sleeper = more stove hours |
Passions: Burning Cooking. Minor Plants only if they also grow (Baseliner). Do not put Plants passion on a Genie cook.
Luxury 6: Great memory, the other of Tough / Quick sleeper, Hard worker, Body modder.
Biotech xenotypes buff Mining (Dirtmole), Crafting / Intellectual (Genie), Animals (Yttakin), combat (Hussar), Social (Highmate). Cooking is a skill + trait problem, not a gene problem.
Gourmand is the cook trait: +4 Cooking, 1.5× hunger, and food binges. Worth it on a dedicated stove pawn. Conflict: Ascetic.
Avoid Hussar as cook (they can cook, but you paid for a soldier). Avoid Highmate as your only cook if you need them social all day.
Take: Gourmand, Industrious / Hard worker, Fast learner, Quick sleeper, Great memory, Tough.
Avoid: Lazy / Slothful, Slow learner, Ascetic (blocks Gourmand), Pyromaniac (kitchen fires).
Neurotic works for speed but raises break risk in a hot, crowded kitchen — Industrious is cleaner.
| Cooking skill (rough) | What you get |
|---|---|
| Low (0–5) | Real food-poison chance — do not let them cook for the colony |
| Mid (6–10) | Safe simple / fine meals |
| High (12–20) | Lavish, packing, and no-drama kitchens |
