sudo sysupdate list, copy the full image version string - Update
sudo sysupdate update {IMAGE_VERSION}
The recommended way to install software is via AppCenter and Flatpak. Simply open AppCenter, and install your apps! AppCenter and Flathub are enabled by default
CLI package managers on elementaryOS are WIP, but you can use the following:
Snaps are explicitly removed, not supported and cannot be installed.
Vanilla NixPkgs or Lix do works, but are not tested, supported or recommended. This is only here so no one asks.
AppImages are not supported.
"Modern" AppImages using fuse3 (or bundled fuse) will work like on any other distro.
Legacy fuse2 AppImage will not work at all.
Check if your AppImage is still using fuse2 with grep -a "libfuse.so.2" ./appname.AppImage
If you get error loading symbol from libfuse.so.2, this application is not compatible with elementary OS.
To run VMs, you have three options:
The virt-manager flatpak is really easy to install, but is limited:
- No host network (session networking)
- USB and devices passthrough can be problematic without custom udev/polkit rules
The big advantage to the flatpak is that it doesn't require any additional setup, and can access your home ootb.
Install (flathub):
flatpak install org.virt_manager.virt_manager org.virt_manager.virt_manager.Extension.Qemu
If no qemu sessions show up in virt-manager, run
flatpak run org.virt_manager.virt-manager -c "qemu:///session" --show-host-summary
and check Autoconnect
Gnome Boxes is available on flathub: https://flathub.org/en/apps/org.gnome.Boxes
Boxes is made to be easy to use, but is really limited on options made available from the GUI.
The extension only comes with the services and cli utilies.
Install virt-manager (GUI only) from flathub, and connect it to the system session. qemu:///system
See "Enabling optional features" below to enable the option virtualization feature.
Reboot once the feature has installed to reload users, groups and /etc files
You must add yourself to the libvirt group for this to work.
This has all expected qemu fonctionalities, without flatpak restrictions.
To see available features, run : sudo sysupdate features
- Features starting with
ext-are extra optional packages - Features starting with
driver-are out-of-tree kernel modules
To enable one, run sudo updatectl enable --now {feature-name}
Then reboot.
Once enable, the feature will auto-update with the base system
Currently available features:
- ext-virt : Qemu and virt-related packages
- ext-devel : Packages required to develop elementaryOS itself, also include common build tools (like ninja and make)
- driver-nvidia : Nvidia-open driver from Ubuntu Restricted
- driver-broadcom: WL driver from Ubuntu Restricted
