v0.17.4 — pre-commit hook
Added
- pre-commit hook. confdiff now ships a
.pre-commit-hooks.yaml, so it can run as a pre-commit hook that blocks a commit (and prints the semantic diff) when two config files drift apart — e.g. guarding.env.exampleagainst.env, or keepingstaging/prodoverlays aligned.
# .pre-commit-config.yaml
repos:
- repo: https://github.com/esperanza-volkov/confdiff
rev: v0.17.4
hooks:
- id: confdiff
args: [config/staging.yaml, config/prod.yaml, --ignore, replicas]
files: ^config/(staging|prod)\.yaml$Pass the two paths and any flags via args; the hook does not append matched filenames. No change to CLI, Action or MCP behaviour.

v0.17.3 — Action symlink-escape hardening
Security (GitHub Action only): block symlink escape past GITHUB_WORKSPACE. A config file tracked as a symlink could be retargeted in a PR to point outside the checkout; for lenient formats (CSV/.env) the target's contents would be read and posted into the public PR comment. The Action now resolves each changed file with realpath and skips (with a warning) anything outside the workspace. The npm CLI (dist/) is unaffected. The moving v1 tag now points here. Thanks to @anupamme (#5).
v0.17.2 — security: rebuild GitHub Action bundle (CVE-2026-85730)
Security (GitHub Action): The Action's bundled CLI (action/confdiff.cjs) had been lagging at the v0.16.0 build and still contained the smol-toml parser vulnerable to CVE-2026-85730. A pull request adding a malformed TOML config file could hang the Action's job (DoS) until the runner timed out. This release rebuilds the bundle from patched source (smol-toml 1.7.1); verified the trigger input no longer hangs.
The npm CLI (dist/, installed via npm i -g confdiff / npx confdiff) was already patched in 0.17.1 and was never affected — only the Action's baked-in bundle. The moving v1 tag now points here, so uses: esperanza-volkov/confdiff@v1 picks up the fix automatically.

v0.17.1 — security: smol-toml CVE-2026-85730
Security
- Bump
smol-tomlto^1.7.1for CVE-2026-85730 (HIGH): a DoS whereparse()could enter an infinite loop on a value inside an array/inline table followed by a comment with no trailing newline. confdiff parses arbitrary user-supplied TOML, so this input was reachable.
Thanks to @anupamme for the report and patch (#3).
npm install -g confdiff@0.17.1
v0.17.0 — standalone confdiff-mcp + official MCP Registry
Standalone confdiff-mcp package + official MCP Registry listing
- New
confdiff-mcpnpm package — MCP clients can now use a plainnpx -y confdiff-mcp(no-pflag), exactly what Claude Desktop / Cursor / Cline expect. - Listed in the official MCP Registry as
io.github.esperanza-volkov/confdiff-mcp— the canonical registry AI clients query for server discovery. Published via GitHub OIDC (no secrets). - README / llms-install / CHANGELOG updated to the simpler invocation.
- The
confdiff-mcpbin inside the mainconfdiffpackage still works.

v0.16.1 — MCP docs fix
Docs patch: corrected the MCP client config to npx -y -p confdiff confdiff-mcp (the confdiff-mcp binary ships inside the confdiff package). No code change; see v0.16.0 for the MCP server itself.
v0.16.0 — MCP server
confdiff v0.16.0 — Model Context Protocol server
confdiff now ships an MCP server (confdiff-mcp) so AI coding agents (Claude Desktop, Cursor, Cline, Windsurf, …) can diff configs by meaning instead of pasting whole files.
Two tools:
diff_configs— diff two config strings already in the model's context.diff_config_files— read two files from disk and diff them.
Both take the same options as the CLI (ignore, only, arrayKey, arraySet, loose, formatA/formatB, redact, redactEntropy) and return a compact change list + structured JSON. redact: true masks secret values as stable fingerprints so plaintext passwords/tokens never enter the model's context while drift stays visible.
{ "mcpServers": { "confdiff": { "command": "npx", "args": ["-y", "confdiff-mcp"] } } }The server is bundled into a single self-contained binary, so the MCP SDK stays dev-only — installing confdiff for the CLI does not pull it in.

v0.15.0 — redact k8s name/value secret pairs
Fixed
--redactnow masks secrets stored as name/value pairs — the ubiquitous Kubernetesenv:shape{ name: DB_PASSWORD, value: <secret> }and similar CI variable blocks. Previously the value leaked in the clear (its key is literallyvalue); now, when the list is diffed with--array-key name, confdiff reads the siblingnamefield and redacts the paired value.env[name=DB_PASSWORD].valueis masked whileenv[name=LOG_LEVEL].valuestays visible.
Install: npm i -g confdiff · npx confdiff a.yaml b.yaml

v0.14.1
npm package metadata refresh: description & keywords now reflect the full nine-format set (incl. JSONC and .properties), cross-format comparison, and the --redact secret-masking feature, so confdiff is discoverable via npm search. No code changes.
v0.14.0 — JSON-with-comments (JSONC / tsconfig) support
confdiff now parses JSON-with-comments cleanly: tsconfig.json, VS Code settings.json, devcontainer.json, .eslintrc.json, .babelrc, and .jsonc files that use // + /* */ comments and trailing commas (invalid strict JSON, but ubiquitous in practice) — which previously errored out.
The strip is string-aware (a // or /* inside a double-quoted string, e.g. a URL, is preserved) and a strict no-op on conforming JSON, so ordinary JSON diffs and parse-error line/column numbers are unchanged. +5 tests (114 total).
