What is data collection consent?

Firefox recently announced new data collection consent warning popup, that add-ons needs to display, it they transmit sensitive information.

This is great for the user privacy, because you'll know beforehand, which data can addon transmit out of your device!

However, the popup text is generic, and doesn't always match addon real behavior.
This can cause confusion and a huge negative feedback from users and addon authors:

Why Group Speed Dial needs browsingActivity permission?

My speed dial stores your URLs, and if you enable synchronization with my cloud server, your dials data will be transmitted out of your PC.

This falls under the browsingActivity section, see the table:

What does this mean for me as user

First of all - nothing is changing!
This is just a formality to stay compliant with the new Firefox policy.

Still applies that:

  • if you don't create cloud account, your dials data stays in your PC
  • if you create cloud account and enable dials synchronization, your dials data will be transmitted to my server - but nobody else can access it (see privacy policy)
  • if you enable E2E encryption your data will be encrypted before uploading to server, thus completely private!
