CodexNotch 0.1.7 — Up to 90% Less CPU, Zero Lost Signal
This is not just a slower animation. CodexNotch now decides when motion deserves CPU time—and becomes fully static without losing the running or completed signal.
Measured performance
Same Mac, same running-state workload, production builds, 12-second warm-up, and a 60-second process CPU-time sample per build:
| Configuration | Average CPU | Change vs. v0.1.6 |
|---|---|---|
| v0.1.6 running animation | 6.80% | baseline |
| v0.1.7 low-power animation on | 4.25% | 37.5% lower |
| v0.1.7 animations off | 0.75% | 89.0% lower (~90%) |
- Ring frame-request budget: 60 FPS -> 8 FPS (86.7% fewer requests).
- Wave-ball frame-request budget: 30 FPS -> 8 FPS (73.3% fewer requests).
- Completion firework timeline: 60 FPS -> removed (100% eliminated).
- Memory stayed effectively flat at approximately 135-136 MiB; this release targets continuous rendering cost, not resident memory.
These are same-device local measurements rather than universal hardware guarantees, but the benchmark setup and exact numbers are included to make the claim reproducible.
Motion, rebuilt around actual work
- Motion now runs only while a task is active, app animations are enabled, and macOS Reduce Motion allows it.
- The ring completes a calmer 3-second cycle within an 8 FPS budget.
- A new Settings toggle stops continuous motion immediately.
- Disabling motion keeps a full-brightness solid quota ring instead of a dim frozen gradient.
- Static running and completed cues remain clear: quota percentage, green ChatGPT mark, and completion checkmark are preserved.
- Hover expansion and collapse now switch immediately inside the proven fixed-canvas architecture.
- The transparent canvas is reclaimed immediately after collapse, so unused space cannot keep intercepting the pointer.
Less animation, not less information
- Removed the card expand/collapse transition.
- Removed the completion firework and its 60 FPS particle work.
- Preserved top-anchored notch geometry, quota warning colors, Reduce Motion behavior, and task-state priority.
Privacy improvement
- The notch mark is now embedded directly in CodexNotch.
- CodexNotch no longer opens or reads another application's bundle just to render the mark.
- This removes the decorative icon's dependency on macOS App Management permission.
Verification
- 43 behavior contracts validated.
- 98 tests passed with zero failures.
- Production build, app bundle, Info.plist, and ad-hoc signature verified.
- ZIP checksum verified.
- DMG checksum, read-only mount, Applications shortcut, and mounted app bundle verified.
Requirements
- Apple silicon (arm64)
- macOS 14 or later
