osXos v0.1.0
osXos v0.1.0
First release. osXos collects the small maintenance jobs you would otherwise do from a terminal and gives each one a window that explains exactly what it will do before it does it.
✨ Tools that explain themselves
- Every tool opens in its own window with three stages: Explain (numbered steps, and what each one costs you), Review (what was actually found on this machine — exact paths, sizes, the precise commands) and Result (what happened, line by line).
- The inspection runs while you read the steps, so Review is there when you reach it. Nothing changes until you press the button on Review.
- A tool that cannot do anything useful here says so and disables the action. osXos never reports success for a job it did not do.
✨ Twelve tools, four per platform
- Windows — Clear Icon Cache (ends Explorer, deletes
iconcache_*.db/thumbcache_*.db/ legacyIconCache.db, restarts Explorer), Empty Temp Folder, Show Hidden Files & Extensions, Flush DNS Cache. - macOS — Clear Icon Services Cache, Clear User Caches, Show Hidden Files in Finder, Flush DNS Cache.
- Linux — Clear Thumbnail Cache, Clear User Cache, Rebuild Icon Cache, Flush DNS Cache.
- Every one runs inside your own user account. No UAC, no sudo, no polkit. Where a job genuinely needs root, osXos shows you the command instead of asking for rights.
✨ A menu bar wherever the platform keeps one
- macOS — the real system menu bar, with About, Settings (⌘,) and Quit (⌘Q) in the application menu.
- Windows — published to Hisashi over the hoswl pipe, since Windows has no menu bar of its own. Nothing happens if Hisashi is not running.
- Linux — offered to the desktop's global menu over DBus where one exists.
- The Tools menu is generated from the tool registry, so every tool is two clicks away. Toggle the whole thing in Settings → Menu Bar.
✨ Cogas design language
- Nine editorial palettes and seven typefaces, switchable live.
- Categories derive from the tools that exist, so there are no empty pages anywhere.
- Settings live in plain JSON you can read and edit, under
%APPDATA%\fezcode\osxoson Windows and the platform equivalent elsewhere. osXos makes no network requests at all.

Forge targets Windows, so the macOS and Linux builds ship as tarballs rather than installers.
⚠️ What has actually been verified
Being straight about this, because the version number does not say it:
- Windows — the four Windows tools were run and verified on Windows 11. The installer was built and its version checked against the published binary.
- macOS and Linux — cross-compiled and packaged, but never run on their own systems. Those eight tools are unit-tested for everything that does not need the OS (paths built, exact argv, output parsing, blocked states) and no further.
- The menu bar has not been seen in a macOS menu bar, a Linux global menu, or a running Hisashi. The tree is built and converted for real on both paths, and the hoswl translation is unit-tested, but it has not been watched working.
141 tests pass.
