Release list
osXos v0.2.3
osXos v0.2.3
Windows grows from 26 tools to 131: an All Tools page for running many at once, a live state on every toggle, and the bulk of Chris Titus Tech's WinUtil.
✨ All Tools
- Every tool on one page, grouped by category, each showing what it would do on this machine right now.
- Tick what you want and Run selected: one confirmation that names the tools, how many delete permanently and which ask for administrator rights.
- Tools run one at a time, each on exactly what its row showed, and a run report lists what every tool did.
- Ticking a tool that already includes another greys the smaller one out, so nothing runs twice.
✨ Current state on every toggle
- A pill on each card, in search and on All Tools: Recall off, Copilot on, Enabled, Partly applied.
- Not on this PC when what a tweak controls does not exist here — Recall on a PC that is not Copilot+, Brave when it is not installed, a Windows feature this edition does not offer.
- Reports carry a Read-only pill.
✨ Bing, Copilot, Recall and ads
- Turn Off Bing in Start Search, Turn Off Copilot (Windows, its taskbar button and Edge's sidebar), Turn Off Recall & Click to Do, Turn Off Tips, Suggestions & Ads, and Turn Off Advertising ID & Tailored Experiences — all per-user, no administrator rights.
✨ From WinUtil
- 34 registry tweaks, value for value — Activity History, Delivery Optimization, Edge and Brave debloat, End Task on the taskbar, Explorer Home and Gallery, verbose BSoD and logon, mouse acceleration, Sticky Keys, Game Mode, Long Paths and more.
- 66 script entries run as WinUtil runs them: Telemetry, Services to Manual, Hibernation, Visual Effects, IPv6 and Teredo; features (WSL, Hyper-V, Sandbox, .NET, NFS); fixes (Windows Update reset, network reset, chkdsk/sfc/DISM, NTP, OpenSSH); DNS providers; Windows Update policies; power plans; and 14 classic control panels.
- Review lists every registry value, service, feature and the complete script before anything runs. Everything is undoable where WinUtil records how.
- Entries that download from the internet (Remove Edge, Remove OneDrive, O&O ShutUp10++ and a few more) are not included — osXos makes no network requests.
✨ Hide the Taskbar
- For a desktop run from Hisashi: the Windows taskbar stays hidden through restarts, Explorer restarts and new monitors, until you run the tool again.
Platforms
Windows is verified. The macOS and Linux builds are cross-compiled and their tools are tested against fakes only — they have not been run on a Mac or a Linux machine.
osXos v0.2.2
osXos v0.2.2
Twenty-one new tools. Every platform now fills all seven of its categories — Windows 25 tools, macOS 18, Linux 16.
✨ Switch Dark / Light Mode, on every OS
- Flips the operating system's own mode, apps and shell together, and runs again to switch back.
- Windows:
AppsUseLightThemeandSystemUsesLightTheme, then the sameImmersiveColorSetbroadcast Settings sends, so the taskbar and open apps redraw on the spot. - macOS: asks System Events, the same switch as System Settings → Appearance. macOS asks once to allow Automation.
- Linux: KDE Plasma between Breeze Light and Dark; GNOME and friends through
color-scheme, plus the GTK theme's-darkvariant when one is installed.
✨ Clear Developer Caches and Clear Browser Caches
- Developer caches: npm, Yarn, Bun, Deno, node-gyp, pip, uv, NuGet, Go build, Cargo and Gradle — never a project folder, Maven's local repository, Go's module cache or pnpm's store.
- Browser caches: every profile in Chrome, Edge, Brave, Vivaldi, Chromium and Firefox — never cookies, passwords, history or bookmarks.
✨ Windows
- Clear Shader Caches (DirectX, NVIDIA, AMD, Intel) and Clear Crash Dumps & Error Reports.
- Classic Right-Click Menu for Windows 11, Show Seconds on the Taskbar Clock, Show Full Path in Explorer Titles.
- Startup Apps Report: both Run keys and both Startup folders, each marked enabled or disabled as Task Manager records it. Read-only.
✨ macOS
- Empty Trash through Finder, so osXos never needs Full Disk Access. Reset Quick Look Cache.
- Restart Dock, Show Finder Path & Status Bars, Save Screenshots to Pictures.
- Clear Xcode Build Data (Archives are kept) and Delete Unavailable Simulators.
✨ Linux
- Empty Trash, Remove Unused Flatpak Runtimes, and Clean Package Cache for apt, dnf, pacman or zypper — the second tool in osXos that asks for administrator rights, through polkit.
- Restart Audio for PipeWire or PulseAudio, and a read-only Failed Services Report.
✨ AI Assistants
- New: Clear AI Temp Files — per-session scratchpads, shell snapshots, Codex's temp folders, and the pasted images and git indexes Codex leaves in the system temp folder.
- Fixed: Clear AI Tool Caches no longer deletes Gemini's saved chats.
~/.gemini/tmpholds each project's conversations and is now treated as history. - Results now read "N items across M locations".
✨ A light/dark switch for osXos itself
- On the top bar, in Settings, and under View → Dark Mode in the menu bar. Each mode remembers its own palette.
Platforms
Windows is verified. The macOS and Linux builds are cross-compiled, and their tools are tested against fakes only — they have not been run on a Mac or a Linux machine.
osXos v0.2.1
osXos v0.2.1
✨ A new category: AI Assistants
Claude, Codex and Antigravity leave a great deal under your profile and never come back for it. On the machine this was built on that is 3.7 GB across nineteen locations, most of it somewhere nobody would think to look — 1.5 GB of Codex session transcripts, 1.1 GB of Claude Code ones, and 475 MB of installer packages Claude Desktop kept after updating itself four times.
Three tools rather than one, because a single list with a single button would be the wrong shape for this:
| Tool | What it takes |
|---|---|
| Clear AI Tool Caches | Only what is reproducible by definition — scratch, logs, sandbox binaries, Electron caches, installer payloads |
| Clear AI Assistant History | Only the stored transcripts |
| Remove AI Tool Leftovers | Both of the above, plus the residue neither claims: plugins, extensions, generated images, state databases |
🔒 What none of them can delete
Not even the last one. Four kinds of thing are not in the map these tools search at all, so they cannot appear on a Review stage and cannot be deleted by pressing the button on one:
- Logins —
.credentials.json,auth.json,oauth_creds.json,.sandbox-secrets - Settings —
settings.json,config.toml,~/.claude.json,trustedFolders.json - Hand-written instruction files and skills —
CLAUDE.md,GEMINI.md,AGENTS.md,skills/ - Memory — every
memory/folder inside~/.claude/projects, andmemories_1.sqlite
~/.claude/projects is the awkward case, because the transcripts to remove and the memory to keep share a folder. Each project is listed with the size of its transcripts alone, and memory/ is excluded from the deletion rather than handed to the sweep and skipped.
The map is a fixed list of known locations, never a search for anything AI-shaped under your profile — a tool that went looking would eventually find something it should not have, and Review would be the only thing standing between that guess and your files. The app-<version> folders under AnthropicClaude are deliberately absent for the same reason: one of them is the copy currently running, and osXos will not guess which.
🧪 Tests
Thirty-eight new ones. The one that matters builds a fake profile containing a credential, a setting, a skill and two memory files, runs the most aggressive of the three tools over the lot, and asserts every one of them is still there afterwards. Others pin that the two narrow tools do not overlap, that the wipe is exactly the whole map, that no target sits inside another, and that inspection changes nothing. 238 tests pass in Release.
📋 Notes
- Rows are one per location rather than one per file, so a 2.6 GB transcript store arrives as twenty-odd rows instead of forty thousand.
- None of the three asks for administrator rights. Everything they touch is inside your own account. Clear Windows Update Cache remains the only tool in osXos that elevates.
- The category ships on all three platforms and appears once a tool claims it, as every category does.
💻 Platforms
Windows is the only platform verified. This release was built, tested and run on Windows 11. The macOS and Linux builds are cross-compiled from the same source and have never been run on their own systems — the AI Assistants paths for those two (~/Library/Application Support, $XDG_CACHE_HOME, $TMPDIR) are written from the specifications, not from a machine.

osXos v0.2.0
osXos v0.2.0
Windows goes from four tools to twelve, and from three populated categories to all six.
✨ Privacy
- Clear Recent Files & Jump Lists — the Recent folder plus both jump-list stores (
AutomaticDestinationsandCustomDestinations). Pinned jump-list items live alongside the recent ones and go too, which the warning says up front. - Clear Explorer & Run History — addresses typed into Explorer's address bar, terms typed into its search box, and commands typed into Win+R. The Review stage shows you the actual entries before anything is removed.
✨ Developer — both read-only, on purpose
- Developer Settings Report — long path support, Developer Mode, process architecture.
- PATH Health Check — dead entries left by uninstallers, duplicates, and empty entries (which Windows reads as the current directory).
Neither changes anything. Long paths and Developer Mode live in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and are settings a developer should turn on knowingly rather than have a maintenance tool toggle; PATH is the single variable every build tool on the machine depends on, and a bad rewrite breaks all of them at once. Both report, and tell you exactly where to go.
✨ Maintenance
- Empty Recycle Bin — every drive, with the real count and size first. It re-queries the bin afterwards rather than reporting the number it asked for, so a file held open shows as remaining instead of being claimed as deleted.
- Clear Windows Update Cache —
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download, routinely several gigabytes, and the standard first move when an update keeps failing.
✨ Explorer & Shell
- Restart Explorer — the shell on its own, for a stuck taskbar, tray or desktop. Deletes nothing; if it does not help it has cost you a second and changed no state.
- Rebuild Open With Lists — clears the per-extension
FileExtscache so Explorer stops offering programs you uninstalled. Scoped toHKEY_CURRENT_USER:HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTis untouched, so no file type is unregistered. Your per-extension defaults do go, and the warning says so.
✨ The first tool that needs administrator rights
Clear Windows Update Cache is the first tool in osXos that genuinely cannot work inside your own account — the folder is system-owned and the Windows Update service holds it open.
- It runs the stop, the delete and the restart as one elevated command, so Windows asks once rather than three times.
- Declining the UAC prompt reports as Cancelled, not as a failure. Saying no is a choice.
- osXos elevates that single command and never relaunches itself as administrator, so the window, your settings and every other tool stay at normal rights.
- The category header now states the fact rather than a slogan: 1 of 4 need administrator.
A test pins the exact list of tools allowed to ask, so one cannot gain elevation quietly. That test was written in 0.1.1 and failed the moment this tool appeared, which is what it was for.

⚠️ What has actually been verified
- Windows — all twelve tools build and their logic is covered by tests running against in-memory registry and Recycle Bin fakes, so no test touches the real machine. The eight new tools have not each been run end to end on a live system; in particular no UAC prompt has been raised, because that needs a real elevated run.
- macOS and Linux — unchanged this release, still four tools each, still never run on their own systems.
- The menu bar — still not seen in a macOS menu bar or a Linux global menu. The Hisashi fix from 0.1.1 came from a screenshot, not from a running Hisashi here.
204 tests pass, up from 165.
osXos v0.1.1
osXos v0.1.1
Four bugs reported against 0.1.0, all fixed, plus the groundwork for tools that will need administrator rights.
✨ Button icons are visible again
The chevron on Continue and the checkmark on Save Settings were painting in the button's own fill colour — not dim, invisible. A PathIcon does not inherit its button's foreground: Avalonia's control theme gives it an explicit one, and explicit beats inherited. Every button class that sets a foreground now sets its icon ink too.
✨ No more freeze on a large folder
Opening Empty Temp Folder on a temp directory holding 40,647 entries froze the window, and scrolling it afterwards was unusable.
The scan was never the problem — that already ran off the UI thread. The found-list was an ItemsControl inside a ScrollViewer, which hands it infinite height, so it built all 40,000 rows at once and blocked the dispatcher mid-layout. That is why the frozen frame still said "Inspecting…".
- The list virtualises now, with fixed-height rows so the scroll extent can be estimated and long paths trimmed rather than wrapped.
- Row projection moved off the UI thread as well.
FileSweeptakes a cancellation token, so closing the window actually stops a long walk instead of leaving it grinding in the background.
Measured with 40,000 rows: ready in ~750 ms off-thread, window rendered in ~670 ms, smooth scrolling.
✨ Runs report progress
Pressing Run and watching nothing happen for thousands of files was indistinguishable from a hang. The Review summary now becomes a live progress bar with a count and the current file — 16,284 of 40,647 — wctA479.tmp — and Back and Run disable while it works. Tools whose work cannot be counted show an indeterminate bar rather than a fake percentage.
✨ Hisashi menubar no longer says osXos twice
Hisashi draws the application's name itself, so a first menu also called osXos produced a menubar reading osXos osXos Tools View Help. It is File on Windows and Linux now, with About moved to Help where it belongs. macOS keeps the app-named first menu, because there the first submenu becomes the application menu.
✨ Elevation groundwork
Some tools will need administrator rights. The plumbing is in place for them:
IElevationServiceelevates one named command —runason Windows, an AppleScript authorisation prompt on macOS,pkexecon Linux. osXos never relaunches itself as administrator, so the window, your settings and every other tool stay at normal rights.- A tool declares that it needs rights, or a preview declares that this particular run does. The Review stage then names the prompt the OS is about to show, before it shows it.
- The category header states the fact rather than a slogan.
No tool shipped today needs elevation, and a test enforces that. The README and About panel no longer promise there will never be a prompt, because one day there will be.
✨ New wordmark
The sidebar and About lockup are set in Exo, with the X picked out in the accent — the same angular geometry the app mark draws.

⚠️ What has actually been verified
- Windows — the icon fix, the 40k-row list and the progress bar were all measured on Windows 11, the last two against a real 40,647-entry temp folder.
- macOS and Linux — cross-compiled and packaged, still never run on their own systems.
- The menu bar — the File/osXos split is unit-tested and the native menu is built for real, but it has still not been seen in a macOS menu bar or a Linux global menu. The Hisashi fix is from your screenshot, not from a running Hisashi here.
- Elevation — plumbed and unit-tested for the commands it builds; no prompt has been raised on any platform, because nothing calls it yet.
164 tests pass, up from 141.
osXos v0.1.0
osXos v0.1.0
First release. osXos collects the small maintenance jobs you would otherwise do from a terminal and gives each one a window that explains exactly what it will do before it does it.
✨ Tools that explain themselves
- Every tool opens in its own window with three stages: Explain (numbered steps, and what each one costs you), Review (what was actually found on this machine — exact paths, sizes, the precise commands) and Result (what happened, line by line).
- The inspection runs while you read the steps, so Review is there when you reach it. Nothing changes until you press the button on Review.
- A tool that cannot do anything useful here says so and disables the action. osXos never reports success for a job it did not do.
✨ Twelve tools, four per platform
- Windows — Clear Icon Cache (ends Explorer, deletes
iconcache_*.db/thumbcache_*.db/ legacyIconCache.db, restarts Explorer), Empty Temp Folder, Show Hidden Files & Extensions, Flush DNS Cache. - macOS — Clear Icon Services Cache, Clear User Caches, Show Hidden Files in Finder, Flush DNS Cache.
- Linux — Clear Thumbnail Cache, Clear User Cache, Rebuild Icon Cache, Flush DNS Cache.
- Every one runs inside your own user account. No UAC, no sudo, no polkit. Where a job genuinely needs root, osXos shows you the command instead of asking for rights.
✨ A menu bar wherever the platform keeps one
- macOS — the real system menu bar, with About, Settings (⌘,) and Quit (⌘Q) in the application menu.
- Windows — published to Hisashi over the hoswl pipe, since Windows has no menu bar of its own. Nothing happens if Hisashi is not running.
- Linux — offered to the desktop's global menu over DBus where one exists.
- The Tools menu is generated from the tool registry, so every tool is two clicks away. Toggle the whole thing in Settings → Menu Bar.
✨ Cogas design language
- Nine editorial palettes and seven typefaces, switchable live.
- Categories derive from the tools that exist, so there are no empty pages anywhere.
- Settings live in plain JSON you can read and edit, under
%APPDATA%\fezcode\osxoson Windows and the platform equivalent elsewhere. osXos makes no network requests at all.

Forge targets Windows, so the macOS and Linux builds ship as tarballs rather than installers.
⚠️ What has actually been verified
Being straight about this, because the version number does not say it:
- Windows — the four Windows tools were run and verified on Windows 11. The installer was built and its version checked against the published binary.
- macOS and Linux — cross-compiled and packaged, but never run on their own systems. Those eight tools are unit-tested for everything that does not need the OS (paths built, exact argv, output parsing, blocked states) and no further.
- The menu bar has not been seen in a macOS menu bar, a Linux global menu, or a running Hisashi. The tree is built and converted for real on both paths, and the hoswl translation is unit-tested, but it has not been watched working.
141 tests pass.
