osXos v0.2.0
osXos v0.2.0
Windows goes from four tools to twelve, and from three populated categories to all six.
✨ Privacy
- Clear Recent Files & Jump Lists — the Recent folder plus both jump-list stores (
AutomaticDestinationsandCustomDestinations). Pinned jump-list items live alongside the recent ones and go too, which the warning says up front. - Clear Explorer & Run History — addresses typed into Explorer's address bar, terms typed into its search box, and commands typed into Win+R. The Review stage shows you the actual entries before anything is removed.
✨ Developer — both read-only, on purpose
- Developer Settings Report — long path support, Developer Mode, process architecture.
- PATH Health Check — dead entries left by uninstallers, duplicates, and empty entries (which Windows reads as the current directory).
Neither changes anything. Long paths and Developer Mode live in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and are settings a developer should turn on knowingly rather than have a maintenance tool toggle; PATH is the single variable every build tool on the machine depends on, and a bad rewrite breaks all of them at once. Both report, and tell you exactly where to go.
✨ Maintenance
- Empty Recycle Bin — every drive, with the real count and size first. It re-queries the bin afterwards rather than reporting the number it asked for, so a file held open shows as remaining instead of being claimed as deleted.
- Clear Windows Update Cache —
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download, routinely several gigabytes, and the standard first move when an update keeps failing.
✨ Explorer & Shell
- Restart Explorer — the shell on its own, for a stuck taskbar, tray or desktop. Deletes nothing; if it does not help it has cost you a second and changed no state.
- Rebuild Open With Lists — clears the per-extension
FileExtscache so Explorer stops offering programs you uninstalled. Scoped toHKEY_CURRENT_USER:HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTis untouched, so no file type is unregistered. Your per-extension defaults do go, and the warning says so.
✨ The first tool that needs administrator rights
Clear Windows Update Cache is the first tool in osXos that genuinely cannot work inside your own account — the folder is system-owned and the Windows Update service holds it open.
- It runs the stop, the delete and the restart as one elevated command, so Windows asks once rather than three times.
- Declining the UAC prompt reports as Cancelled, not as a failure. Saying no is a choice.
- osXos elevates that single command and never relaunches itself as administrator, so the window, your settings and every other tool stay at normal rights.
- The category header now states the fact rather than a slogan: 1 of 4 need administrator.
A test pins the exact list of tools allowed to ask, so one cannot gain elevation quietly. That test was written in 0.1.1 and failed the moment this tool appeared, which is what it was for.

⚠️ What has actually been verified
- Windows — all twelve tools build and their logic is covered by tests running against in-memory registry and Recycle Bin fakes, so no test touches the real machine. The eight new tools have not each been run end to end on a live system; in particular no UAC prompt has been raised, because that needs a real elevated run.
- macOS and Linux — unchanged this release, still four tools each, still never run on their own systems.
- The menu bar — still not seen in a macOS menu bar or a Linux global menu. The Hisashi fix from 0.1.1 came from a screenshot, not from a running Hisashi here.
204 tests pass, up from 165.
