ENDURANCE

@fkkarakurt fkkarakurt released this 15 Sep 20:51

Two minutes in 4K, and a true story: Shackleton's Endurance, frozen into the Weddell Sea in 1915, crushed and sunk that November, and found in March 2022 at 3,008 metres. The sun, moon and sky are placed for the real date, hour and position of every shot. The picture is 2.39:1 inside the 16:9 frame, shot through a model of a Super 35 film camera. Sources are listed in the demo's README.

File endurance-3840x2160.mp4
Frame 3840×2160
Rate 24 fps
Length 2:00
Video H.264 High, yuv420p
Audio AAC, 48 kHz stereo
Size 331.5 MiB (347646676 bytes)

The streams are exactly as the encoder wrote them. Nothing is scaled down or re-encoded for this upload: the only step after the render is a stream copy that puts the index at the front of the file, so playback can start before the download ends, and adds title and source tags.

Rendered offline: every frame is computed on the CPU by the C code in demos/05-endurance and the shared engine/, and the soundtrack by the same program. No images, no audio files, no 3D models, no game engine, no GPU.

TRACE

@fkkarakurt fkkarakurt released this 15 Sep 20:48

Thirty seconds, vertical, in which nothing is drawn. The picture is the soundtrack, plotted the way an oscilloscope in XY mode plots a stereo signal (left channel across, right channel up) with the past laid out in depth behind the present. Composed for 1080×1920, rendered at 1440×2560. 120 BPM, 15 bars.

RUNTIME

@fkkarakurt fkkarakurt released this 15 Sep 20:49

Thirty seconds, vertical, whose subject is the renderer itself. The picture is not simply shown; it is shown being computed, row by row, in the order the thread pool actually walks it. 128 BPM, 16 bars, cut to the bar.

LIFTOFF

@fkkarakurt fkkarakurt released this 15 Sep 20:47

Thirty seconds, vertical, of a launch to orbit. Every proportion is a real proportion, the trajectory comes out of an integration rather than a curve editor, and the numbers in the corner of the frame are the same numbers steering the camera. 112 BPM, 14 bars.

COLD START

@fkkarakurt fkkarakurt released this 15 Sep 20:54

A two-minute demo in nine scenes: volumetric dust, a starfield, a raymarched tunnel, glass metaballs, a mirror plane, block fracture, a Mandelbox, a crystal lattice and an end scroller, all cut to a soundtrack generated by the same program.
