• Move files instead of copying: Start dragging files from the shelf to a Finder folder while holding a key combination (Command + Shift by default) to move the originals. Regular drags still copy files.
• Recall an existing shelf: Shake the mouse pointer or hold the activation modifier while dragging a file to bring an existing shelf quickly near the pointer. This also works for side tabs and shelves docked at the top of the screen; a capsule expands as it moves.

• Moved the New Shelf shortcut setting into Activation Methods and clarified how to use the shortcut for moving files out of the shelf.

Layby’s first release brings a floating file shelf to macOS. Drop files onto the shelf, switch to your destination, and drag them out when you’re ready—or collect files from multiple folders and move them together.

• Quick activation: Show the shelf by shaking files while dragging, holding a modifier key, dragging to the notch, or using the global shortcut Control + Option + Space.
• Flexible file collection: Gather files, folders, and File Promises from other apps. Drag everything out together or select individual items.
• Grid and list views: Browse thumbnails or a file list with multiple selection, keyboard navigation, copying, and Reveal in Finder.
• Folder browsing and Quick Look: Explore folders directly on the shelf and press Space to preview selected files.
• Mini capsule and docking: Collapse the shelf while keeping files accessible, or dock it at the top center of any display.
• macOS Services: Send selected files to services provided by installed apps.
• Customizable settings: Adjust activation methods, shortcuts, shake sensitivity, app exclusions, and interface language.

Installation

Requires macOS 15.6 or later. Download the prebuilt app archive or DMG from the release assets:

• App archive: Extract it and drag Layby.app into Applications.
• DMG: Open it, drag Layby.app into Applications, then eject the disk image.

First launch

This release is not signed with an Apple Developer ID certificate or notarized by Apple. After downloading from this repository:

1. Open Layby.app from Applications.
2. If macOS displays a verification warning, click Cancel or Done.
3. Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and scroll down to Security.
4. Click Open Anyway next to the message about Layby.
5. Authenticate if prompted, then click Open.

If drag activation does not work in other apps, enable Layby under System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility.

File behavior

Original files stay in place, and dragging them out uses a copy operation. Closing the shelf clears its contents; collapsing it preserves them. Shelf contents are not restored after restarting the app. This version supports files and folders; plain text and web links are not supported.
