Eternal Darkness Recomp 0.9.5

Choose a tag to compare

@griches griches released this 19 Oct 23:23

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem as a native game for the Mac, Windows and Steam Deck / Linux. The game's files (its program, graphics, sound and music) come from your own disc.

European disc only (GEDP01, an .iso or .gcm). The USA disc is not supported.

What's new in 0.9.5

  • Fixed: glow showed through the black bars in cutscenes (a glowing ghost could be seen through them), and lifted HUD text over bright spots. Glow and HDR highlights now stay off the bars, the HUD and fades.

New in 0.9.4

  • HDR on the Mac, Windows and the Steam Deck (and the PS5): lamps, flames, magick and the brightest highlights go past white while the rest keeps the game's own look. It is on by default wherever the screen shows HDR (Options > Display > HDR).
    • Calibrate HDR, just below it: three steps for your screen (the brightest it shows, how bright the picture is, how deep the blacks are).
    • Windows: turn on Use HDR in Windows' display settings first.
    • Steam Deck: in Game Mode, with HDR on in the Deck's display settings. Desktop Mode has no HDR.
  • Photo mode: in game, hold Back (View/Select; P on the keyboard) to pause and frame the shot with a free camera.
    • Left stick moves, right stick looks, LB/RB go down and up, LT/RT zoom, R3 resets (hold it and look to tilt), Start takes the photo.
    • The face buttons, L3 and the d-pad switch HDR, glow, HD textures, shadows, ambient occlusion, the resolution and the ratio for the shot only.
    • Photos are saved as PNGs in Pictures/Eternal Darkness.
  • Ambient occlusion (Off / Soft / Strong, Options > Graphics): soft shading where walls, floors and furniture meet.
  • Glow (Off / Soft / Strong, Options > Graphics) round lamps, flames, magick and glowing surfaces.
  • 21:9 ultrawide: Options > Display > Aspect ratio. The 3D picture fills the wider screen, the HUD stays at its edges, and full-screen pictures are pillarboxed.
  • Options is one spread now: Display, Sound, Graphics, Controls and Game side by side.
  • The European disc now starts in 60 Hz without asking.
  • Movies and menus show at a comfortable white in HDR.
  • In first person, the aiming arms no longer cut into the view.

If you have an earlier version, copy the new folder over your old one (on a Mac, replace the app): your saves, settings, disc and textures stay.

Download

  • Mac (Apple silicon, macOS 13 or later): EternalDarkness-mac-....zip. Unzip it, move Eternal Darkness.app to Applications, right-click it and choose Open the first time (it is not notarised), then drop your disc image on its window. The first start builds the game from your disc (a minute or two).
  • Windows: EternalDarkness-windows-x64-....zip. 64-bit. A ready-made game: unzip it somewhere you can write to (Documents or a Games folder, not Program Files), put your disc image (any name) in the dump folder and double-click play.bat (or start EternalDarkness.exe itself). If SmartScreen appears, choose More info, then Run anyway. The first start reads the game's program from your disc (a second or two).
  • Steam Deck / Linux: EternalDarkness-linux-x86_64-....tar.gz. x86-64. Unpack it (Ark in Desktop Mode on a Deck) to get an EternalDarknessRecomp folder, put your disc image in it and run play.sh. On a Deck, add play.sh to Steam as a non-Steam game and play it from Game Mode. The first start translates your disc and builds the game (about a minute on a Deck); after that it starts straight away.
  • PlayStation 5: a ready-made title from PS5_EternalDarkness; you add your disc.

HD textures

Put both folders side by side in the game's textures folder; the README's set-up steps show where that is on each system.

See the README for setting it up, the controls and how it all works.

Dawn 266c1cf8 with the HDR patch (Linux x86-64 build dependency)

Choose a tag to compare

@griches griches released this 19 Oct 22:13

Not a game release. A build dependency for the Linux / Steam Deck version.

Dawn at encounter/dawn 266c1cf8 (the commit the prebuilt v20260618.032059 package is made from) with dawn-hdr.patch: a 10-bit Vulkan surface is offered and created as HDR10 (BT.2020 PQ, VK_EXT_swapchain_colorspace), which the Steam Deck's Game Mode (gamescope) shows as HDR. Built with the options of encounter/dawn's release CI by tools/deck/build-dawn-hdr.sh in a Debian 13 container. The CMake build fetches it on Linux x86-64 and checks its SHA-256.

dawn-linux-x86_64-hdr.tar.gz SHA-256 d0926c99d472414973561c1bc3c0b0832b69981167a33b8c81689739ef1358ea
Dawn is BSD-3-Clause (LICENSE-dawn inside the archive).

Eternal Darkness Recomp 0.9.3

Choose a tag to compare

@griches griches released this 18 Oct 18:59

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem as a native game for the Mac, Windows and Steam Deck / Linux. The game's files (its program, graphics, sound and music) come from your own disc.

European disc only (GEDP01, an .iso or .gcm). The USA disc is not supported.

What's new in 0.9.3

  • Camera options (beta): Options > Game > Camera adds two cameras beside the game's own fixed ones.
    • Third person: behind the character you play, turned with the right stick (up and down bring it closer or further), kept inside the room by the game's own collision, and swinging round what's in the way.
    • First person: through their eyes, looking around with the right stick; the character faces where you push the stick straight away. Looking closely at something hands over to the game's own shot and back, and their arms and weapon appear while you aim.
  • Fixed: the picture froze while the game carried on when a sanity effect hit (an enemy's stare in the later chapters, such as Bianchi's and the war chapter), then jumped ahead.
  • Fixed: a freeze while fast-forwarding a cutscene.
  • Fixed: with frames in between, the sound could loop after the in-game menu.
  • The text boxes' scroll arrows are drawn smooth, and a hang is reported after 6 seconds instead of 20.

If you have 0.9.0 or earlier, copy the new folder over your old one (on a Mac, replace the app): your saves, settings, disc and textures stay.

Download

Eternal Darkness Recomp 0.9.0

@griches griches released this 17 Oct 22:51

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem as a native game for the Mac, Windows and Steam Deck / Linux. The game's files (its program, graphics, sound and music) come from your own disc.

European disc only (GEDP01, an .iso or .gcm). The USA disc is not supported.

What's new in 0.9.0

  • Smoother on a fast screen: on a 90 Hz, 120 Hz or faster screen the game shows frames in between its own 60 (Options > Frame rate). In fullscreen on a PC the row offers each rate your display has, and switches to it. The FPS counter counts every frame shown.
  • Fast-forward the cutscenes: while a movie plays, or a scene plays in the black bars, an RB sign shows at the bottom right. Hold RB (Tab on the keyboard) and the scene runs at up to four times speed, without sound. It works only in cutscenes, so RB keeps its usual job in play.
  • Every button picture matches your controller: the game's own pictures of GameCube buttons are redrawn with your controller's icons and layout. That covers the "Press A to Continue" screens (the European memory-card screen too), the language screen, the quick-spell slots, the Tome map's lines, the organ's notes and sheet music, and the button icons in the game's text.
  • The Tome: in the Modern layout its buttons sit where its pages say (A, B, X, Y on the face buttons, LB and RB to turn pages), and its controls page lists your own controls instead of a drawing of a GameCube pad.
  • Fixed: at 4K, a one-pixel line of the scene showed at the right edge of the screen during letterboxed cutscenes in 16:9.

If you have 0.8.x, copy the new folder over your old one (on a Mac, replace the app): your saves, settings, disc and textures stay.

Download

  • Mac (Apple silicon, macOS 13 or later): EternalDarkness-mac-....zip. Unzip it, move Eternal Darkness.app to Applications, right-click it and choose Open the first time (it is not notarised), then drop your disc image on its window. Eternal Darkness Recomp 0.8.1

@griches griches released this 17 Oct 17:52

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem as a native game for the Mac, Windows and Steam Deck / Linux. The game's files (its program, graphics, sound and music) come from your own disc.

European disc only (GEDP01, an .iso or .gcm). The USA disc is not supported.

What's new in 0.8.1

  • Windows: starting EternalDarkness.exe itself (instead of play.bat), for example from a game launcher or a shortcut to the exe, stopped the game a few seconds into the intro with "The game stopped", so you never got into the game. It now plays normally, however you start it. If you have 0.8.0, copy the new folder over your old one: your saves, settings, disc and textures stay.
  • Mac and Steam Deck / Linux: no change. Their downloads here are the same files as 0.8.0.
  • PlayStation 5: no change, still 0.8.0.

Download

  • Mac (Apple silicon, macOS 13 or later): EternalDarkness-mac-....zip. Unzip it, move Eternal Darkness.app to Applications, right-click it and choose Open the first time (it is not notarised), then drop your disc image on its window. What's in 0.8.0

  • Drawn at your screen's own resolution up to 4K, at 60 frames a second, with full colour
  • The game's own 16:9 widescreen, with the HUD at the screen's edges (4:3 too)
  • New sharp baked shadows: the rooms' light and shadow rebuilt as each room loads
  • The game's text redrawn crisp (Sharp or Tome), or as on the disc
  • Dolphin HD texture packs in textures/, PNG or DDS: a BC7 DDS pack stays compressed on the graphics card (a quarter of the memory), and a supplement folder beside the main pack overrides it
  • Modern controls, full remapping, and button prompts that match your controller (Xbox, PlayStation or Switch)
  • Save anywhere: four save slots in the pause menu, plus the game's memory cards in slots A and B
  • A launcher with Continue, New game and every save slot; Return to title screen in the pause menu
  • Problem reports: a hang, stop or crash says so on screen and writes a report to saves/reports/
