Tracking can now switch off completely at home, sends fewer points in traffic, and can tell your server what it's doing.

  • Sleep in quiet zones (optional, Settings → Quiet zones). After 5 minutes settled in a quiet zone, tracking stops completely: no GPS, no notification. It wakes up when you leave the zone, when a drive or bike ride starts, when your Bluetooth trigger device connects, or when a fix another app asked for lands outside the zone. It only goes to sleep when its last fix is clearly inside the zone. Needs battery optimization off (and, on Samsung, Overland in "Never sleeping apps"); if Android refuses to wake it, a notification asks you to open the app.
  • Minimum distance between points (default 25 m). A fix closer than this to the last point sent is skipped, so red lights, traffic jams and walking around a site send less. One point still goes out every 5 minutes so the server keeps seeing stops. Set it to Off to send every fix.
  • Send tracking status (optional, Settings → Uploads). Batches also carry status records (tracking_started/tracking_stopped, quiet_zone_entered/quiet_zone_left, sleeping/awake), like Overland iOS's "Include Tracking Stats", so a server can tell a phone that's quiet on purpose from one that was turned off. See the README.
  • Event log (optional, off by default, Settings → Logging). Records fixes, Google activity with its confidence levels, accuracy changes, Bluetooth, quiet zones, sleep and uploads, kept for 24 h, 48 h or 7 days. Open it from Settings or by tapping the Activity rows on the home screen, and share it as a text file. It stays on the phone unless you share it.
  • More reliable background tracking. If Android stops tracking anyway, it starts again when a drive starts, the Bluetooth trigger device connects or the app is opened. If no location arrives for a while, location is requested again.
  • Fixes: when tracking can't resume after a reboot (start on boot off, or no location permission) it's now turned off, so opening the app doesn't quietly start it again. Damaged saved quiet zones or Bluetooth devices no longer crash the service.

Upgrade: installs over earlier versions and keeps your settings and queued points. New install: download overland-1.4.2.apk below and open it on your phone. See the README for setup.
