Overland for Android 1.4.2

Choose a tag to compare

@happytechca happytechca released this 17 Oct 16:17

Tracking can now switch off completely at home, sends fewer points in traffic, and can tell your server what it's doing.

  • Sleep in quiet zones (optional, Settings → Quiet zones). After 5 minutes settled in a quiet zone, tracking stops completely: no GPS, no notification. It wakes up when you leave the zone, when a drive or bike ride starts, when your Bluetooth trigger device connects, or when a fix another app asked for lands outside the zone. It only goes to sleep when its last fix is clearly inside the zone. Needs battery optimization off (and, on Samsung, Overland in "Never sleeping apps"); if Android refuses to wake it, a notification asks you to open the app.
  • Minimum distance between points (default 25 m). A fix closer than this to the last point sent is skipped, so red lights, traffic jams and walking around a site send less. One point still goes out every 5 minutes so the server keeps seeing stops. Set it to Off to send every fix.
  • Send tracking status (optional, Settings → Uploads). Batches also carry status records (tracking_started/tracking_stopped, quiet_zone_entered/quiet_zone_left, sleeping/awake), like Overland iOS's "Include Tracking Stats", so a server can tell a phone that's quiet on purpose from one that was turned off. See the README.
  • Event log (optional, off by default, Settings → Logging). Records fixes, Google activity with its confidence levels, accuracy changes, Bluetooth, quiet zones, sleep and uploads, kept for 24 h, 48 h or 7 days. Open it from Settings or by tapping the Activity rows on the home screen, and share it as a text file. It stays on the phone unless you share it.
  • More reliable background tracking. If Android stops tracking anyway, it starts again when a drive starts, the Bluetooth trigger device connects or the app is opened. If no location arrives for a while, location is requested again.
  • Fixes: when tracking can't resume after a reboot (start on boot off, or no location permission) it's now turned off, so opening the app doesn't quietly start it again. Damaged saved quiet zones or Bluetooth devices no longer crash the service.

Upgrade: installs over earlier versions and keeps your settings and queued points. New install: download overland-1.4.2.apk below and open it on your phone. See the README for setup.

Overland for Android 1.3.2

Choose a tag to compare

@happytechca happytechca released this 09 Oct 21:30

Better battery life at home, more quiet zone sizes, and a fix for a badge you couldn't clear.

  • Low power in quiet zones. Inside a quiet zone, location now stays in low power whatever the accuracy setting. Before, walking around at home switched GPS to high accuracy every 10 seconds even though those points weren't sent. GPS comes back as soon as you're in a vehicle, your Bluetooth trigger device connects, or a fix lands outside the zone.
  • More zone sizes: 50, 100, 125, 150, 200 and 300 m. 500 m is gone from the list; a zone already set to 500 m keeps it.
  • No more app icon badge. In a quiet zone the tracking notification showed a "1" on the app icon that couldn't be dismissed. The "In a quiet zone" notification channel is replaced by one without badges; if you customized the old channel, its settings reset.
  • Settings screen: the location accuracy options are no longer clipped on larger display sizes, and the selected option no longer disappears after rotating the phone or changing the theme (from 1.3.1, not released separately).

Upgrade: installs over earlier versions and keeps your settings and queued points. New install: download overland-1.3.2.apk below and open it on your phone. See the README for setup.

Overland for Android 1.3.0

@happytechca happytechca released this 09 Oct 20:05

The notification icon now shows what tracking is doing, so you can tell at a glance from the status bar or the always-on display.

Icon Meaning
Car On a trip ("Trip in progress" with a live timer and distance), or your Bluetooth trigger device just connected ("In the car")
Cloud with a slash Points haven't uploaded for 15 minutes; the notification says since when and why
House In a quiet zone. The notification stays minimized, without a status bar icon on phones that allow it
Parking sign Still; low-power location
Pin Tracking while moving
Pin with a slash Location is turned off on the phone
  • Visible states use a new Tracking status notification channel that never makes a sound or vibrates. It sits one step above "silent", so the icon also reaches the always-on display on phones that leave silent notifications off it. The old "Trip in progress" channel is removed.
  • The Trip notification setting is now Status icon. Turn it off to keep the notification minimized everywhere.

Upgrade: installs over earlier versions and keeps your settings and queued points. New install: download overland-1.3.0.apk below and open it on your phone. See the README for setup.

Overland for Android 1.2.1

Choose a tag to compare

@happytechca happytechca released this 09 Oct 15:57

Trips now start on time, home stays quiet, and uploads cope better with a bad connection. This release includes the unreleased 1.2.0 changes.

  • Bluetooth trigger (Settings → Bluetooth trigger): choose paired devices such as your car. While one is connected, location stays at high accuracy, so trips are recorded from the first metre instead of when motion detection catches up. It stays on for 2 minutes after the device disconnects, so the parking spot is recorded accurately. Needs the Nearby devices permission on Android 12 and newer.
  • Quiet zones (Settings → Quiet zones): inside a zone you set (home, office…), points aren't sent unless you're on a trip, so walking around inside sends nothing. The last point held back is sent first when a trip starts, so it starts where you were parked.
  • While the phone is still, location fixes requested by other apps (e.g. navigation) are picked up at no extra battery cost, and a fast one switches straight back to high accuracy.
  • Smarter uploads: nothing is tried without a network, failed uploads are retried after 1, 2, 4, 8, then every 15 minutes, and a connection coming back retries right away. No request is made when there is nothing to send.
  • The 15-second upload interval was removed; the shortest is now 30 seconds.

Upgrade: installs over 1.0.0 and 1.1.0 and keeps your settings and queued points. New install: download overland-1.2.1.apk below and open it on your phone. See the README for setup.

Overland for Android 1.1.0

@happytechca happytechca released this 09 Oct 04:31

A redesign of the app in Material 3, with a light and a dark theme based on the Overland orange.

  • Home shows live status only: a health banner, tracking on/off with the current motion and accuracy mode, the trip timer and distance, the last fix, the last upload and queued points with Send now.
  • Settings (gear icon) saves as you type: server URL, access token and device ID with Test connection, upload interval, batch size, location accuracy (adaptive, always high accuracy or low power), start on boot and the trip notification.
  • Diagnostics checks permissions, battery optimization, the tracking service, manufacturer background limits and Google Play services. Each failed check has a button that fixes it. Tap the banner on Home to open it.
  • Changes to the upload interval, accuracy and trip notification apply right away, without restarting tracking.
  • Fixes the hard-to-read purple text on the orange Start button.

Upgrade: installs over 1.0.0 and keeps your settings and queued points. New install: download overland-1.1.0.apk below and open it on your phone. See the README for setup.
