Browser has become sluggish with my design. #607

@stainlessdmc12 thank you for telling me. A tab that stays open for days is a likely cause: the browser keeps growing in memory, and the undo history of the design grows with every step you take (it is kept in memory as well). Two things to try:
If it is still slow right after a fresh reload, please send me the .lyl file (drag it into a comment here), and tell me which browser you use. Then I can look at what makes it heavy. |
|
I already rebooted my PC.. I`ll see how it goes. Not sure if I should create another topic but is there an easier way to select an imported shape if it overlaps another at the same height? I can click everywhere 20 times and not select it.. then on the 21st time it selects.. I do a lot of ' select a shape, duplicate, change that dupe to a hole and combine the hole with another shape to create a hole ( that leaves the original shape in there.. |
|
Object list does help :) thank you.. also something else I noticed.. If you create square shape, stretch the end to an oblong.. turn it however many degrees... then you want to extend again it remembers it needs to extend it properly ( unlike TC where you would end up with some trapazoid thing ) well done :) 34MB :/ zip file |
|
Two things that has helped me tremendously . Make sure your history is realistic, by that I mean don't set it at unlimited. Been there, done that, it created a lot of problems for me. I third thing that help, if you don't use fast mode, turn on fast mode or turn off all shadows. These have helped me a lot. |
|
ok thanks for the tips.. Also noticed that when I`m using the object list, hiding things... they just become un-hidden again |
|
1:If I remember correct I go back a step with ctrl-z and that seems to bring back all the hidden pieces. They all come back at once. |
|
ok thanks.. So no issues on both points :) |
|
I made the duplicate hole piece taller and dropped it through the workplane a bit and combined.. still pieces left over. |

Hi. Yes I still get the little bits of walls left over. I'm on very 199 or
something.
Oh. I didn't think it was a particular heavy design. Importing svgs I
didn't think would be bad. Ok I'll try simplifying things. Thanks again
for your help.

@stainlessdmc12 <https://github.com/stainlessdmc12> thanks for the video
and the screenshot. "Out of Memory" means the browser tab ran out of
memory. Your design has about 2.5 million triangles, and every step with a
big hole, like stretching it across the whole workplane or combining, has
to be calculated on that, so it gets slow and at some point the tab gives
up. The restart does not change that, the design itself is too heavy.
What helps most: simplify the shapes that have 30,000 triangles or more,
delete copies you do not need any more, and build parts in separate
projects and bring them together only at the end. A hole that is only as
big as the part it cuts is much lighter than one stretched over everything.
Reload the page after a long session, and keep Fast mode on.
One question: do you still see the little leftover bits when you make a
fresh copy, after reloading the page (Ctrl+F5) so you have the new version?

I don't use Inkscape.. When you import with TC.. it imports at a certain quality.. and you notice the round edges aren't round... but made up of straight edges. You move the slider to improve the quality the straight edges get smaller and smaller till they aren`t seen ( guessing they are still there but just too small to worry about ). This is going to be hard to explain but when I simplify in layerling.. the round edges don't appear squarer... the round edges end up looking dented and weird. |
|
Just going back to the undo for a moment.. Just now I imported something.. then I moved it.. I pressed ctrl-z to go back a step and it removes the design.. I'm expecting it to undo the move.. then if I were to ctrl-z again it would remove the design ( second step ) I`ve noticed this a few times but not really worried about it till now. |
|
ok thank you.. so I exported as a .SVG from Affinity. For the test I just grabbed it and dragged it.. Because my design fit snigly together with other shapes ( for the logo or whatever ) I need them to go back to where they were. |
|
Have you though about being about to copy/paste from TC... like you can do from TC to TC? I like the way the export in Layerling keeps all the individual pieces and colours when I open it in Affinity. Export options are brilliant! |
|
Ok thank you.. is there anyway I import as a sketch? or do I have to export
a different way to what I`m doing now?

@stainlessdmc12 <https://github.com/stainlessdmc12> good to hear the
message is gone, and thank you for the kind words about the export.
*The rough curves:* Simplify can only take triangles away by
straightening the curves, so a large step always shows on the round parts.
Two things help:
- Simplify that one outline more gently: undo it and keep more of it,
for example 60 to 70 % instead of less than half. The curves stay smoother,
and you still save a good part.
- Better still, let the outline come in as a sketch instead of a mesh.
An SVG with up to 2500 lines and curves comes in as a sketch body: its
curves stay true curves, it stays light however round it is, and you can
still edit it. Only a more detailed SVG comes in as a fixed mesh, and that
is where the 40,000 triangles came from. If Affinity can export the outline
with fewer nodes (a simplify or "reduce nodes" step on the curve before
exporting), it will most likely come in as a sketch and stay round.
*Copy and paste from Tinkercad:* Tinkercad's copy only works inside
Tinkercad; it does not put the shapes on the computer's clipboard, so no
other program can paste them. There is a free tool from the community for
this: Export to layerling
<https://taylormadearmy.github.io/tinkercad-layerling-importer/> by
taylormadearmy. It is a bookmark that turns a Tinkercad design into a .lyl
file in your browser, with its real shapes, which you then open or insert
in layerling (Import, then Open layerling design or Insert into this
design). It is not part of layerling, so for questions about it, ask there.

ok so in Affinity the imported svg from layerling looks like this
[image: image.png]
The white squares.. you're calling nodes right? just so we are talking
about the same thing :)

@stainlessdmc12 <https://github.com/stainlessdmc12> There is no switch
for it, layerling decides by itself when you import: an SVG with up to 2500
lines and curves comes in as a sketch, a more detailed one as a mesh. So
it's the SVG itself that needs to change, not the way you import it. You
can tell which one you got: a sketch shows *Sketch body* in its
properties and opens for editing with a double click.
Two ways to get under the limit:
- Export the outline with fewer nodes. Curves need far fewer nodes
than you might think, and a sketch keeps them perfectly round however few
there are.
- Split the drawing: export the black outline as one SVG and the other
parts as separate SVGs, and import them one by one. The limit counts per
file, so each part can come in as a sketch.

ok thanks for that..
I normally do export from Affinity.. so if my design has four shapes ( four
colours ) then I have to export for items... I was just looking for a way
to export one file with all the bits inside.. rather than four indiviual
pieces. :)

@stainlessdmc12 <https://github.com/stainlessdmc12> Yes, exactly, the
white squares are the nodes. Each piece of the outline between two nodes is
one of the "lines and curves" that count towards the 2500. (Your picture
didn't come through on GitHub, by the way, replies by mail drop images, but
the white squares are clear enough.)
One thing to watch: an SVG exported from layerling is the wrong starting
point here. layerling exports the mesh, so every round part is already cut
into many short straight pieces, with a node at each corner. That's why you
see so many squares. Export the outline from your original Affinity drawing
instead. There the round parts are real curves with only a few nodes each,
so it should come in as a sketch and stay smooth.

What I mean is.. my currennt setup with TC. I design it in Affinty.. export
each colour/shape from there into TC.. arrange it etc... so it`s printable.
If the file is relatively easy I export the different pieces as a save.
You said not to export from Layerling that way? I like that you can export
the svg and it comprises the elements.. but it`s not high quality..

@stainlessdmc12 <https://github.com/stainlessdmc12> good news, you don't
need four files: export the whole drawing as one SVG with its four colours.
Since 1.107.0 layerling brings a drawing of several colours in as one body
per colour, each in its colour and in its place.
I need to correct what I wrote earlier: the 2500 lines and curves don't
count for the whole file then, but for each colour on its own. So the four
parts are checked one by one, and each that stays under the limit comes in
as a sketch. I tried it here with one SVG of four shapes in black, red,
green and blue: four sketch bodies, in their colours and where they were in
the drawing.
The colour that has to be lighter is usually the black outline, as it
carries the most nodes. If it still comes in as a mesh, that is the one to
export with fewer nodes.

Thank you.. I can get round it.. just interested as to why it works in TC and SimpCAD. |

Uh oh!
There was an error while loading. Please reload this page.
Admittedly.. I`ve had my browser tab open for a few days... but moving imported SVGs or adding blocks etc has become very sluggish.
Not sure how I can help you right now... Unluess I reboot and open my design again maybe.
