Ferriteweazle 1.4.0 adds Analyse, a view of each side of the disk as Greaseweazle Tools sees it, sector by sector or as flux, as well as Image analysis for image files.

New

  • Analyse, draws each side of the disk with every sector as gw sees it.
    • Sectors colours each sector by how it decoded: good, empty, deleted, bad data, bad header or incomplete.
    • Flux shades each track by the flux gw read along it.
    • Fit the window, or drawn to scale for 3½", 5¼" or 8" disks.
    • Hover over a sector for its ID, its checks and, for IBM formats, how each revolution read it. Flux also shows where it lies and the track's flux. Click a sector to open it.
    • The sector window shows a sector's bytes and steps to the next sector, cylinder or side, with its arrows, the arrow keys or a typed cylinder.
  • Image analysis shows how an image file is laid out, sector by sector, on Read, Write and Convert.
  • PCB Green, a new dark theme (I think that's enough themes for now).
  • Tracks turn green as gw verifies them, now also for IPF, EDSK, IMD, TD0, D88, NFD and MSA images written without a format.
  • In the Log and a sector's bytes, a selection scrolls when dragged past the edge, and Copy includes lines out of view.

Fixed

  • Linux: the bundled Greaseweazle Tools work on systems with glibc 2.42 or later, such as Ubuntu 26.04, where every command failed with (22, 'Invalid argument') (#8).
  • Choices no longer shift by a point on hover or press (#6).
  • Text reads more clearly in every theme
  • Various improvements to tooltips / wording
  • Linux: the app no longer closes on start on X11 desktops without libxkbcommon-x11, which is now bundled.

Notes

  • The disk view shows only what gw reports. Tracks read with --reverse or --fake-index aren't drawn.
  • The gw.exe from gw’s own Windows download runs gw’s commands, but not Detect, Read passes, Analyse or Image analysis. The bundled gw and any pip, pipx or uv install support everything.
  • Updating the zip or tarball from the app now replaces every file in the download. 1.3.3's updater only replaced the program and greaseweazle/, so after updating from 1.3.3 that way, unpack the 1.4.0 download over it once (on Linux this adds lib/).
  • The AppImages are signed with key 345C DF2C 9C98 5A78 A95A C488 641B 6610 CD25 223A and can update themselves with AppImageUpdate.
  • On Linux the desktop entry is now io.github.hobbo91.ferriteweazle. If you made one from the tarball's README before 1.4.0, remove the old one (rm -f ~/.local/share/applications/ferriteweazle.desktop) and run the README's step again.

*Ferriteweazle is made for a small community, so word of mouth treuly makes a real difference: if it’s useful to you, please share it with others who use a Greaseweazle. If you’d like to see it listed in the official Greaseweazle’s docs, there’s a discussion here where a comment or upvote would mean a lot.

Ferriteweazle 1.3.3

@hobbo91 hobbo91 released this 05 Oct 11:33
7dcba83

Feature parity release, after (another) audit of Greaseweazle Tools 1.23.

Features:

  • Step takes the rest of gw's step=[0-9]: an Other… number box beside 1 to 4 and ½. Step 0 is kept as gw takes it.
  • No clobber (gw's -n) is an option under Advanced options on Read and Convert. On, gw refuses an existing file; off, the app asks before overwriting, as before.
  • Track settings say what gw does with cylinders past the format: a read decodes and saves nothing there unless Raw is on, a write skips them or erases them with Erase empty tracks, a conversion skips them.
  • The disk map's hover names the drive or image cylinder gw read or wrote when a step, a swap or a head offset moved it, as gw's T5.0 <- Drive 10.0 has it.
  • Advanced options keep a set order under headings: Disk definitions, then Reading, Drive and Image on Read; Writing and Drive on Write; Conversion, Image and Output track settings on Convert. Anything a newer gw adds goes last.
  • Revolutions says gw's default wherever it is offered: the format's own on Read (a fraction such as 1.1 is a timed read; Raw rounds it to whole revolutions), or 3 without a format. An SCP image's Revolutions option says what gw writes without it: two revolutions of a decoded track, or all read with Raw on.
  • Every text box has Cut, Copy and Paste on a right click
  • A newer release's banner, Settings > Update and the Greaseweazle Tools row link to the release notes on GitHub.
  • The head offset tip names the Panasonic (side 1, −8) and Teac (side 0, +8) flippy mods.

Fixes:

  • The "84 cyl" presets read or wrote 80 cylinders, as gw's formats define 80 and a sector image holds no more: the Read ones now keep raw flux of all 84 cylinders as SCP, with the format checking the 80 it defines, and the Write ones are gone.
  • The step tip no longer gives the 40-track example.

Notes:

  • A -n pasted into the command line on 1.3.2 was dropped; it is now kept and shown as No clobber, so a read to an existing name is refused by gw rather than asked about. Turn it off under Advanced options to be asked.
  • The release Readmes point to the example presets in the repository's presets folder.
  • New dependency on macOS: the muda menu crate (MIT or Apache-2.0), listed in the third-party notices.

@hobbo91 hobbo91 released this 02 Oct 16:58

Minor bug fix release:

Fixes:

  • Windows: short paths show as %USERPROFILE%\Documents instead of ~\Documents.
  • Windows MSI: the app reopens after an in-app update, the same as the other versions.
  • Disk status shows the image name when writing a disk, the same as reading.

@hobbo91 hobbo91 released this 01 Oct 14:47

New feature release:

Fixes:

  • The Presets menu ticks the preset the page loaded. Long names are truncated.

  • Pages that need a device ask to connect one before anything else.
  • A slightly narrower default window width
  • Fix the cmd view size compared to Log output size.

@hobbo91 hobbo91 released this 01 Oct 00:37

New feature release:

  • Various disk map improvements/fixes
  • Track settings layout improved
  • General layout improvements
  • Multiple disks can add the set's size to each name: Game_Disk01_of_12.
  • Added ability to add a description to presets
  • Device delays: Get delays fills each field with the drive's current value. Set delays writes the ones entered.
  • Detect sets the head step it measures on Read and Convert, and leaves Write's step alone.
  • Empty fields show gw's default as their value (Clean heads, Drive speed, retries).
  • A batch write's confirmation states the first image name in the first prompt
  • The theme chosen in Settings is kept between launches.
  • Clearer tooltips for Retries, Passes and the Pin field.

@hobbo91 hobbo91 released this 30 Sep 15:13

Minor bug release:

  • Bug with disk numbering when reading multiple disks
  • Fix to the tooltip text "Names each disk sequentially", not "Asks for each disk sequentially".
  • The Passes hover says how a pass differs from Retries.
  • Obligatory text to the about section.
  • Adds Github URL to the Windows .msi installer version

Ferriteweazle 1.1.0

@hobbo91 hobbo91 released this 30 Sep 13:32

New feature release:

  • Read passes: read a disk up to 5 times while sectors are missing. The image takes every sector any "pass" found.
  • Later passes re-read only the tracks still missing sectors, or the whole disk. Each pass's flux can be optionally kept.
  • Multiple disks can ask for the next disk's name before reading it, instead of only numbering them.
  • Multiple disks reads increased to 256 max, label is blank by default.

Ferriteweazle 1.0.2

Choose a tag to compare

@hobbo91 hobbo91 released this 30 Sep 11:35

Changes:

  • The disk map always shows the cylinders and sides you set, before and after a read.
  • Various visual improvements
  • Allows you to show a map with >90 cylinders (if you're that way inclined)
  • With no format, the map shows only the tracks being read.

Ferriteweazle 1.0.1

Choose a tag to compare

@hobbo91 hobbo91 released this 30 Sep 10:26

Minor bug-fix release.

Fixed

  • Bug where selecting another disk format now sets the cylinders and sides to that format's, even after you changed them by manually.
  • Double step stays as you or Detect set it, unless the new format has too many cylinders to double step.
  • HFE image's bitrate goes back to the new format's, except with Raw on.
