Rusty MCLA 0.6.0

The new career's opening
- A new career starts up as the original's: after START the camera stays held over the city, the save boxes stand over the dimmed map and take ACCEPT, CREATE A NEW SAVE GAME brings the auto-save warning, then SAVING and LOADING, and only then the fade to black and the film. CONTINUE WITHOUT SAVING brings the auto-save disabled warning.
- VEHICLE SELECT as the original's: the three starters stand in the lot from before the film, left and right move the camera as the script does, and ACCEPT gives you the chosen car while the starter stays in the lot. INTRO FAST keeps the arrival by bus.
- The career's music as the original's (the loading music, the vehicle select music, the radio waiting through the opening) and sound for the start screen to the landing: the climb and descent sounds, the aircraft and helicopter loops, and no engine sound for the player's car before the career makes it.
- Story scenes play their audio as the original does (dialogue, the scene's effects stream and its mixer scene), and cutscenes draw each driver's cutscene copy, so the player's eyes no longer stand out of their sockets in the first story scene.
- The first story man is where the original puts him: his race enters the log after its scene, he pulls away from the lot after it, and flashing him warps straight to his race. His icon shows the GPS target's ripple before the flash.
- START opens the pause menu only where the original lets it (not on VEHICLE SELECT, the save boxes, the opening film, story scenes and race-start cinematics, the warps, the last 3 seconds before GO, the race's end, the MINI MAP lesson or photo mode).
Races and driving
- The head-on wipeout as the original's rule: driving into the nose of a traffic car, or straight into something fixed, above 22.35 m/s with a velocity change of at least your car's wipeout threshold wipes you out, adds the damage and the spin, and starts the slow motion. A car's own hit no longer wipes it out except through this rule; a bike's blow still does, and the player's Agro skips it.
- Race opponents behave as the original's after the line and away from the player: a finished racer drives its finishing route and holds on the brake instead of reversing round the finish, brain-driven racers keep simulating on the city's collision bound, and no race opponents are shown on the minimap.
- The slipstream trail and turbo sounds matched to recordings of the original: the trail is drawn over the player's own car, with the original's fog, and the charge loop, launch chirp and burn sound as the original's.
- The race start's 3-2-1 stays on the race clock, so GO lands on the GO tick.
Sound
- Landmark ambience by the original's arithmetic: the location emitters' volume between their radii, and the 342 emitters with equal radii play at -100 dB as in the original.
- Car sounds follow their car when the list moves, instead of being dropped and loaded again every frame while traffic despawns.
Fixed
- The start screen's first call no longer goes out on the start screen, where its story scene had played under the alert and taken ACCEPT (issue #2).
- Frame-time spikes of 0.4 to 1.4 seconds in police pursuits are gone: police chasing a player off the lanes no longer search the whole lane graph every tick. Long sound streams are decoded progressively instead of on the main thread, the 3D hook icons and the minimap are drawn on the GPU, and hookman, hangout, grid and pedestrian assets are read ahead on threads. What is drawn and simulated is unchanged.
- South Central's lots, sidewalks and lawn edges were painted opaque white, and the GPS map over them showed white blocks; the ground layers that have no grime map now draw no grime.
- The GPS map's icons could end up over the prompt bar after another navsys screen was opened first.
- The HUD and minimap movies showed their placeholders (the race clock's 1:23.45, a white map mask) for a few frames after the opening's scene.
- The pause panel could lose its black list and cursor bar, because the textures made while the game loads behind the start-up movie did not reach the menus' renderers.
- The starters were drawn without wheels, a car a story scene poses glided with its wheels still, and the menu scenes' traffic glided on the start screen; the wheels now spin with the movement.
- A landmark whose inner radius is above its outer (50 and 49.94) no longer crashes the ambience.
Known issues
This is still an early release. Expect bugs; please report crashes for now.
Update
- This update changes the game program only (the launcher has no change but its version number); the install data version is unchanged, so there is no rebuild offered. An install built before 0.5.0 has no pond water shader file yet, and the fountain basins and ponds keep their generic look until the game data is built again.
- If something goes wrong, Export Logs on the Support tab, and Settings > General can go back to the previous game version.
Game
- The GT-R's tuning, sound and cameras are borrowed from other cars, because the disc has none of its own.
- Some sounds are approximations: the opponents' engine blend uses speed only, the traffic's obstacle, lane-limit and emergency-brake sounds are stand-ins, the junction warning follows the port's signalled junctions, the wipeout loops follow the port's wipeout flag, and the air-ride sounds are not played.
- Delivery and garage icons on the minimap are in the wrong place or have the wrong design.
- South Central's two hangout entries are not armed, and the rear-view mirror is an option that you have to switch on.
- Gear shifts at the start of a race can look delayed.
- The frame rate can still drop at random while racing; the spikes in police pursuits are fixed.
- Two-wheel-drive cars pull slightly harder than they should. Some bike behaviours (stoppie, burnout), some particle effects and parts of the pedestrian behaviour are approximations.
- The far city and a few places at dusk and dawn differ slightly from the original.
- Online play is not available.
Settings and extras not available yet
- The launcher shows the display and performance options, but the game reads
settings.tomlwhen it starts; changes in the game's OPTIONS pages are applied at once and saved. Ultrawide handling and upscaling are not available. Fullscreen has been tried on one machine only, and choosing a second monitor has not been tried. - Mods, custom music (including Spotify), controller rumble and adaptive triggers, and racing wheels are not available. The launcher's Mods and Music tabs are locked previews.
Launcher
- Windows only for now. Linux and macOS are planned and only compile-checked.
- It is not code-signed, so Windows may show "Windows protected your PC". Choose More info, then Run anyway, after checking the SHA-256 below.
- It needs the Microsoft Edge WebView2 runtime (built into Windows 11 and current Windows 10) and about 14 GB of free space for the game data, plus the disc image itself.
- Only the Xbox 360 Complete Edition (USA, Europe) disc image is supported. PS3 saves can only be imported from the US release.
- The Gamepad tab is read-only and does not show the layout yet. Only English is available.
Install and update
New here? Download RustyMCLA.exe, put it in a folder of its own and start it; it walks you through the setup. You need your own disc image of the Xbox 360 version of the game (Midnight Club: Los Angeles, Complete Edition). Nothing of the game is included.
Already installed? The launcher offers this update by itself. You can always skip it.
The launcher is not code-signed, so Windows may show "Windows protected your PC". Choose More info, then Run anyway, after comparing the SHA-256 below with your download.
