Career and menus
- Police fines follow the original: a fine per offence, the pursuit's seconds and the flee fine, cut by your career share, with speeding bands from the road's limit and roof-top jump, two-wheel and off-road offences. With the police on you and a fine due, ARCADE and GOAL ATTACK show the PAY FINE box before going on, and the fine comes out of your money.
- The repair question as the original asks it: NEXT RACE asks it first (after a race and, with its own text, during one), VIEW REPLAY during a race asks first with the event's own text, GO TO GARAGE after a series or tournament race asks until the event is decided, and a wrecked car's repair box offers YES alone.
- MODES ARCADE and GOAL ATTACK stay open in a race and ask the race's own quit question first. A wrecked car gets DAMAGED OUT before ARCADE, GOAL ATTACK or RACE EDITOR, and pause is refused while the car is wrecked.
- REMOVE RACE FROM FAVORITES asks YES / NO first, and no more than a hundred favourites are kept.
- The delivery panel comes up within 12 m of the set-up's own trigger point, with no speed test, as the original's; when you are chased it shows LOSE COPS again every 10 seconds. A delivery's intro plays once and the job starts on the race's grid slot 0.
- HUD splash messages keep the original's five per slot, and the cluster's backlight pulses near a police car when you are speeding.
- The telephone challenge call and the career radio's squelch clicks are heard.
Racing and driving
- A racer's 1.5 second collision timer starts when you run into it, as the original does, and the hit makes its brain halve its steer slew.
- Vehicle bodies under 3.2 m apart are held apart by their ellipsoids (the simulator's soft push), each pushed half the overlap at the head of the next step.
- Race opponents read the race line's vehicle tables the way the original does, and generic slot hookmen get their car's set-up from the career generator.
- Arrest holds are 0.5 seconds longer when the target is damaged out.
Settings
- A new graphics setting in
settings.toml:backend = "auto","vulkan"or"dx12"under[display](auto is Vulkan where the driver has it, else DirectX 12, as before). The log's "in effect" line shows it, andWGPU_BACKENDstill wins. - The log shows the GPU time of each part of the frame (a
gputimes:line every 240 frames;MCLA_GPU_TIMES=0turns it off). Nothing is held up: the timings are read back three frames later.
Tools
mcla-tool registry, the maintainers' tracker of what is decoded and verified, is part of the tool now. It does not change the game.
Fixed
- The cockpit camera stays in the car under power (issue #9). The speed's distance scale shortened the boom by the whole boom instead of the offset's own length, so the R8's cockpit went 0.92 m forward at full speed and out onto the bonnet (now 0.33 m, as the original's). The homing step runs once per game frame, so the decay and lag are the same at any frame rate. Backing up no longer turns a view onto its reverse boom; only the reverse camera and the look back do.
- INTRO OFF plays a new career's opening film before VEHICLE SELECT (issue #8). OFF used to skip the film and the arrival scene as well, so a new save went from black straight to VEHICLE SELECT; the original has no switch for it. OFF now skips only the start-up movie.
- Sound is no longer lost for the session when the output device will not open (issue #13). The game logs the audio host and the default output device with its format, tries the default device at its own format and then at every supported format, then every other output device, and runs silent and tries again every 3 seconds if none opens. A stream that stops, or a change of Windows' default output device, reopens the output. The
audio:section of the log shows what it tried. - The pad's A and B reach boxes outside the menus, as Enter and Esc do: the new career's save boxes, NEW GAME / CONTINUE GAME, message and tutorial boxes, the phone call and a few menu pages (issue #11).
- A delivery's walk to the car no longer plays twice, and the delivery intro now plays before the job starts on the grid.
- The made-up "HANGOUT - PULL IN TO SEE THE EVENTS" message is gone. It is not in the original's strings and showed at hangouts the career keeps closed.
- Loading is faster with the driver's shader cache cold (19.4 to 7.0 seconds on the machine it was measured on; 4.8 to 3.2 seconds warm), pressing START no longer reads pedestrian files (30.8 to 10.6 ms), and the intro runs without hitches: the first frame no longer waits 2.5 to 6.5 seconds for pipelines, and the new career's starters and first scene are read ahead. Nothing is drawn differently.
- The spot lamps' light direction is the converter's exact vector.
Known issues
This is still an early release. Expect bugs; please report problems on GitHub.
Update
- This update changes the game program only (the launcher has no change but its version number); the install data version is unchanged, so there is no rebuild offered. An install built before 0.5.0 has no pond water shader file yet, and the fountain basins and ponds keep their generic look until the game data is built again.
- If something goes wrong, Export Logs on the Support tab, and Settings > General can go back to the previous game version.
Game
- Low frame rates on some RTX 50-series cards (about 20 to 30 fps at 1440p and 4K) are being looked into; they do not show on a 3090. If you see it, compare
backend = "vulkan"and"dx12"and attach the logs with theirgputimes:lines. DirectX 12 has been tried on one machine only, and its first start takes a few minutes while shaders compile. - The pad fixes have not been tried with a real pad here, and the sound fix has not been confirmed on the machine that had no sound.
- The GT-R's tuning, sound and cameras are borrowed from other cars, because the disc has none of its own.
- Some sounds are approximations: the opponents' engine blend uses speed only, the traffic's obstacle, lane-limit and emergency-brake sounds are stand-ins, the junction warning follows the port's signalled junctions, the wipeout loops follow the port's wipeout flag, and the air-ride sounds are not played.
- Delivery and garage icons on the minimap are in the wrong place or have the wrong design.
- South Central's two hangout entries are not armed, and the rear-view mirror is an option that you have to switch on.
- Gear shifts at the start of a race can look delayed.
- Two-wheel-drive cars pull slightly harder than they should. Some bike behaviours (stoppie, burnout), some particle effects and parts of the pedestrian behaviour are approximations.
- The far city and a few places at dusk and dawn differ slightly from the original.
- Online play is not available.
Settings and extras not available yet
- The launcher shows the display and performance options, but the game reads
settings.tomlwhen it starts; changes in the game's OPTIONS pages are applied at once and saved. Ultrawide handling and upscaling are not available. Fullscreen has been tried on one machine only, and choosing a second monitor has not been tried. - Mods, custom music (including Spotify), controller rumble and adaptive triggers, and racing wheels are not available. The launcher's Mods and Music tabs are locked previews.
Launcher
- Windows only for now. Linux and macOS are planned and only compile-checked.
- It is not code-signed, so Windows may show "Windows protected your PC". Choose More info, then Run anyway, after checking the SHA-256 below.
- It needs the Microsoft Edge WebView2 runtime (built into Windows 11 and current Windows 10) and about 14 GB of free space for the game data, plus the disc image itself.
- Only the Xbox 360 Complete Edition (USA, Europe) disc image is supported. PS3 saves can only be imported from the US release.
- The Gamepad tab is read-only and does not show the layout yet. Only English is available.
Install and update
New here? Download RustyMCLA.exe, put it in a folder of its own and start it; it walks you through the setup. You need your own disc image of the Xbox 360 version of the game (Midnight Club: Los Angeles, Complete Edition). Nothing of the game is included.
Already installed? The launcher offers this update by itself. You can always skip it.
