Release list
SaneScan 1.3.1
New in 1.3.1
- No Homebrew installation required. The app now includes SANE, its scanner backends and the libraries needed for scanning.
- Native PDF creation: PDFs are created directly with macOS frameworks. ImageMagick is no longer required.
- Native text recognition: Apple's on-device Vision framework adds a searchable text layer in German and English. ocrmypdf, Tesseract and additional language packs are no longer required. If recognition fails, all scanned images are still saved.
- Export as PDF, PNG, JPEG or TIFF using the Create ("Erstellen") action. PDF and TIFF collect all pages in one file; PNG and JPEG save one image per page.
- Scanner components ship with their licenses, matching source archives and rebuild instructions.
Updating
From SaneScan 1.1 or later, choose SaneScan → Check for Updates… ("Nach Updates suchen …"). Save or export any open scans before the update restarts the app.
For a first installation, download SaneScan-1.3.1.dmg, open it and drag SaneScan into Applications. Requires macOS 14 or newer on Apple Silicon. No separate command line tools are needed. Scanner support depends on the included SANE backends; some models require vendor firmware or custom configuration.
See the README and scanner runtime documentation for details.

SaneScan 1.2
New in 1.2
- Choose PDF, PNG, JPEG or TIFF before exporting. The action is now called Create ("Erstellen") in the window and menu; the keyboard shortcut remains ⌘S.
- PDF and lossless TIFF combine all scanned pages into one file. PNG and JPEG export individual images with numbered file names for multi-page scans.
- OCR is available for PDF. Image exports run natively through macOS ImageIO and need no external image tools.
- The selected export format is remembered between launches. Existing files require confirmation; interrupted replacement restores the originals.
- A pending update can continue after a successful export in any supported format.
Updating
From SaneScan 1.1, choose SaneScan → Check for Updates… ("Nach Updates suchen …") to install this version in the app. Automatic checks also discover the update. Save or export any open scans before the update restarts the app.
For a first installation, download SaneScan-1.2.dmg and drag SaneScan into Applications. Requires macOS 14 or newer on Apple Silicon. Existing Homebrew scanner tools are still required; PDF creation uses ImageMagick and optional OCR uses ocrmypdf.
See the README for setup instructions.
SaneScan 1.1
New in 1.1
- Select a rectangular scan area from a full-bed preview using four draggable corner handles. Adjust corners with the keyboard or VoiceOver actions.
- Scan the selected position and size at the chosen resolution. Preview images are kept out of the PDF.
- Check for updates from the SaneScan menu and download, verify and install future releases directly in the app.
- Update installation waits for active scans and unsaved pages before restarting.

Download SaneScan-1.1.dmg and drag SaneScan into Applications.
Upgrading from 1.0: install 1.1 manually once. Future releases can be installed through SaneScan → Check for Updates….
