VidGrab

A video downloader for iPhone. Paste a link, pick a quality, done. Or open the built-in browser, play a video, and tap the Download button that pops up on it.

I made this because I wanted something simple that just works on my phone, without jailbreak tweaks or a pile of extra packages to install.

• Browse sites inside the app and grab whatever video is playing, and copy a video's direct link

• Choose Download or Stream: stream plays right away in the built-in player, which has a download button to keep the video
• Built-in player with swipe gestures
• Auto subtitles made on your phone, no internet needed
  • Best quality may make the phone hot or warm. Balanced or Fast is safest. Subtitles are not 100% accurate.
• Import videos from Files
• Repairs broken streams so the video still turns into a playable MP4

1. Go to the Releases page and download the latest VidGrab.ipa.
2. Install it with TrollStore, or any sideloading app you already use.

Works on iOS 15 and newer. No jailbreak needed.

VidGrab wouldn't exist without yt-dlp. It's the engine that does the real work of finding and downloading videos from all these sites. Huge thanks to the yt-dlp developers and everyone who keeps it working as sites change. If a site breaks, VidGrab can update yt-dlp from Settings, so fixes from their team reach you quickly.

For auto subtitles, thanks to whisper.cpp by Georgi Gerganov and the ggml authors (MIT), which runs the speech model on the phone, and to OpenAI Whisper (MIT), the model it is based on. Model files are hosted by Hugging Face.

Also used:

• FFmpeg for joining video and sound and converting files (LGPL 2.1 or later)
• LAME for MP3 (LGPL)
• Python for iOS by BeeWare, which lets yt-dlp run on iPhone (PSF License)
• certifi, requests, urllib3, idna, charset-normalizer and websockets (Python packages yt-dlp relies on)
• TrollSpeed by Lessica for the speed display (MIT)
• Ad-block filter lists from uBlock Origin Lite (GPLv3) and Peter Lowe's list (free for non-commercial use)

You'll need Theos (iOS 16.5 SDK) on Linux or macOS, plus:

• BeeWare's Python.xcframework (3.14), with ios-arm64/Python.framework copied into vendor/ios-arm64
• FFmpeg 7.1.1 and LAME 3.100 built as static iOS libraries
• yt-dlp and its Python packages installed into an app_packages folder

Set the paths at the top of Makefile and assemble.py, then:

make FINALPACKAGE=1
python3 assemble.py

You'll get VidGrab.ipa in the project folder.
