Murmur turns your spoken words into text on your screen. It runs directly on your device. Your data stays on your machine. You do not need an internet connection to use it. The software uses modern speech recognition technology to understand your voice clearly.
Your computer must meet these requirements to run the software:
- Operating System: macOS 13.0 or newer.
- Processor: Apple Silicon (M1, M2, or M3 chip).
- Memory: 8GB of RAM or more.
- Storage: 2GB of available hard drive space.
Check your computer settings if you do not know your processor type. Click the Apple icon in the top left corner of your screen. Select About This Mac. The processor information appears in the window that opens.

Privacy matters. Murmur works entirely on your local computer. No audio files or transcripts leave your machine. The software does not send your voice data to any servers. You do not need to create an account or log in to use the tool. Your data stays private.
Follow these tips if you experience issues:
- If the software does not hear you, check your microphone settings in System Settings. Ensure you gave Murmur permission to access your microphone.
- If the transcription seems slow, close other programs to free up memory.
- Restart your computer if the menu bar icon does not appear.
- Check the release page for updates if you encounter bugs.
Does this require an internet connection? No. Murmur runs offline.
Is my data recorded or saved by the developer? No. All processing happens on your own hardware.
Can I use this for long dictations? Yes. The software handles long sessions well. Speak at a normal pace for the best results.
Will this work on older Intel Macs? No. The software requires a device with an Apple Silicon chip for performance reasons.
