Volume Behavior

How Volume² decides how far one step moves the volume.

Step size

Settings → Main → volume change speed.

This is the amount one wheel notch or one hotkey press moves the volume. Lower it for Windows-like small steps, raise it for coarse jumps; values up to 50 are accepted. If one wheel step currently moves two units and you want one, this is the setting to change.

Control method: linear, logarithmic, table

Settings → Main → volume control method.

Linear

Every step moves the same number of percentage points. Predictable, but it feels wrong at low volumes because hearing is not linear.

Logarithmic

Steps are small at the bottom of the range and larger at the top, which matches perception more closely. Choose this if the volume jumps too much when quiet.

Table

Volume values are defined directly. Two things to know:

• The table sets volume values, not percentages, and steps are distributed evenly between them.
• A fully custom percentage curve such as 0-1-2-3-4-8-16-24-32-40-50-60-70-80-100 cannot be expressed this way. Logarithmic is the closest available approximation.

The common requirement — fine control between 0 % and about 8 %, coarse control above it — is best served by the logarithmic method.

Mute options

Two related checkboxes:

• Mute at zero volume — reaching 0 also mutes the device.
• Unmute on volume change — raising the volume from zero unmutes it again.

Known issue: with the logarithmic method and both options enabled, raising the volume from zero can leave the device muted until the level is already fairly high. With a change speed of 35, sound may return only at 14. Workaround: use the linear method, or turn off mute at zero volume. Check the issue tracker for current status.

Sound feedback per step

Volume² can play a short click on each volume change so the granularity is audible. If the click plays on only some steps, enabling the option to act only when volume increases reduces the effect.

Volume per device

Volume² does not store a separate volume level per audio device, so speakers left at 12 and Bluetooth headphones that connect at 75 will both use the current level.

Workaround: use the Scheduler. Create a task triggered by a device change with the action set volume, one per device you care about. Each output then comes up at its own level. See Scheduler and Remote Access.

Channels and balance

• Left/right balance can be viewed and adjusted from the tray panel.
• Some devices do not support channel control. If the balance slider appears shifted while sound comes from both channels, check whether the device exposes per-channel control at all.
• Swapping left and right channels is not supported. Voicemeeter or a similar tool handles this.
