GIT really likes to know who we are since we are sharing/modifying code to one another so it only makes sense that they/GIT and others want to know who is doing what to the code.. kinda defeats the purpose of GIT if everyone can just anonymously upload code to repos.
Sometimes you'll see the message about setting a "user.name" or a "user.email" value for git to use while remoting in/out of repos.
Not to mention, it's just good practice and etiquette.
