Pre-release.

  • New: Export report in the RAID controller view. One document (.pdf / .html / .md) with equipment, diagnosis (findings with their evidence: value, rule, command and time of the reading), volumes, physical disks, maintenance, trends and what was read, plus the S.M.A.R.T. annex per disk.
  • Fix (beta.3): a virtual RAID drive opens its controller view with the volume highlighted.

Pre-release.

  • Fix: a virtual RAID drive (e.g. a single-drive RAID0 volume on a PERC/MegaRAID) now opens its controller view with that volume highlighted, instead of an empty SMART sheet.
  • Before the controller is scanned, virtual drives appear as "Not read yet".
  • Physical disks and machines without RAID are unchanged.

@juniorbarchini-oss juniorbarchini-oss released this 11 Oct 21:47

Pre-release (beta). Meant for trying the new features; the stable release is 1.2.0. The in-app update notice never offers a pre-release.

New since beta.1

  • RAID controller view. The controller is a node in the sidebar. One click on ↻ Scan controller reads every physical disk in series (with progress and cancel) and, when the vendor tool is already installed, the RAID state in the same step. One table joins S.M.A.R.T. health with what the controller reports, per disk and per volume. The old "Standard / Vendor tool" selector is gone.
  • Maintenance tab: schedule (patrol read, consistency check, battery learn), battery (charge, capacity, cache protection time), controller memory errors, and operations in progress.
  • Trends tab: change of defects, uncorrected errors and temperature over 7 and 30 days, from your own scan history. SmartLinux never predicts a failure date.
  • Plain-language status line at the top of the controller view; single-drive volumes (RAID0 of one disk) are an informational note, not a warning.
  • Diagnostic bundle (read-only, sanitized): Export diagnostic bundle… in the Server panel saves a local .zip of the output of a fixed list of read-only commands, with serial numbers, service tag, addresses and host names replaced. It shows exactly what will be included before saving, and sends nothing anywhere.

Still from beta.1

RAID/PERC physical disks and SAS health, Server panel, optional read-only vendor tool mode (perccli / storcli, never installed by SmartLinux), Seagate packed raw values.

Install

  • Ubuntu / Debian: sudo apt install ./smartlinux_1.3.0.beta.2_all.deb
  • Arch: cd packaging/arch && makepkg -si

Pre-release (beta). Meant for trying the new features; the stable release is 1.2.0. The in-app update notice never offers a pre-release.

New since 1.2.0

  • RAID controllers (MegaRAID / Dell PERC): the physical disks behind the controller are listed and read (smartctl -d megaraid,N), virtual drives are shown as such, and SAS drives report temperature, power-on hours, grown defects and error counters.
  • Server panel: identity of the machine (model, CPU, RAM, OS, BIOS, uptime) and its storage controllers, so you can see what SmartLinux recognized.
  • Vendor tool mode (optional, read-only): if perccli/storcli is already installed, SmartLinux can show RAID volume state, which drives make up each volume, controller error counters and the battery. A strict whitelist of read-only commands; SmartLinux never installs anything.
  • Seagate drives: packed raw values (read/seek errors, command timeouts) are decoded; Command_Timeout flags attention only from 10.
  • Update notice understands pre-releases (alpha < beta < rc < final).

Install

  • Ubuntu / Debian: sudo apt install ./smartlinux_1.3.0.beta.1_all.deb
  • Arch: cd packaging/arch && makepkg -si
  • Optional putty / putty-tools for legacy SSH devices.

Not yet in this beta: the diagnostic bundle export.

Highlights

  • Opt-in update notice. SmartLinux can tell you when a newer release exists. Off until you agree (asked once, changeable from the Updates menu in the status bar); one anonymous request to the public GitHub API, at most daily; nothing is downloaded or installed.
  • USB compatibility mode. Some USB adapters hide the drive's full S.M.A.R.T. table while they run in UAS mode. A new button explains exactly what will happen and, with your consent and administrator permission, briefly switches the adapter to Bulk-Only mode, reads the data and switches it back. Refuses to touch a disk with mounted volumes in use.
  • Fully manual scans. Nothing is read until you ask: Scan Now for a drive that was never scanned, Refresh afterwards, with a "Last scanned" time. Faster and quieter with many hosts connected.
  • Fix: drives behind USB bridges were sometimes reported as "unsupported bridge" although they could be read.
  • Dialog layout stays readable when a window manager forces a fixed window size.
  • Packaging: .deb for Ubuntu/Debian (see assets) and an Arch PKGBUILD in packaging/arch/.

Install

  • Ubuntu / Debian: sudo apt install ./smartlinux_1.2.0_all.deb
  • Arch: cd packaging/arch && makepkg -si
  • Optional putty / putty-tools for legacy SSH devices.

SmartLinux v1.1.0

@juniorbarchini-oss juniorbarchini-oss released this 11 Oct 05:16
e71d732

Highlights

  • Legacy device support: old SSH devices that only offer ssh-dss host keys now connect through PuTTY's plink (optional dependency), selected automatically or via "Legacy SSH (old devices)".
  • Old smartctl (5.x): plain-text parser for devices without JSON output (-j) or --scan, BusyBox-safe drive discovery.
  • USB bridges: ATA pass-through (-d sat) is tried before generic SCSI, so USB-attached disks report real SMART data.
  • Per-disk SMART history keyed by serial number follows the disk across hosts.
  • Tests: 91 passing.

Install plink only if you need legacy devices: putty-tools (Debian/Ubuntu), putty (Arch, Fedora, Homebrew).
