Linuxcnc 2.9 install with Probe_basic GUI
Steps how I installed Linuxcnc 2.9 + QtPyVCP + ProbeBasic GUI following various guides
This install is intended for mesa card if you use Ethernet mesa card to run linuxcnc
After fresh Debian 11 install:
- The 5.10.0-18-rt-amd64 linux-image has been found to work well with Mesa ethernet cards. Later kernels have latency issues with the ethernet port.
sudo apt install build-essential devscripts gdebi git grub-customizer
Download and install RT kernel
Reboot the computer and when you get to boot up select Advanced options for Debian GNU/Linux and pick the 5.10.0-18 -rt-amd64 kernel.
After you boot up go to System > Synaptic Package Manager and search for linux-image. Mark the 5.xx kernel for complete removal and apply. Next time you start the computer it will have the 5.10.0-18-rt kernel.
When booting up select Advanced options for Debian GNU/Linux and pick the rt kernel.
sudo apt update
sudo apt dist-upgrade
sudo apt autoremove
Then install the dependencies:

cd ~
mkdir -p dev/
cd dev/
git clone https://github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc.git
cd linuxcnc/
git checkout 2.9
Run debian configure with without docs
debian/configure no-docs
Check for any build dependencies with
dpkg-checkbuilddeps
To build the Debian packages:
dpkg-buildpackage -b -uc
All the Debian packages will now be in this directory (~/dev/linuxcnc). To install the packages:
cd ..
sudo dpkg -i linuxcnc-uspace_2.9.0~pre0_amd64.deb
These packages should be installed prior to attempting to install QtPyVCP.
sudo apt install python3-pyqt5 python3-dbus.mainloop.pyqt5 python3-pyqt5.qtopengl python3-pyqt5.qsci python3-pyqt5.qtmultimedia python3-pyqt5.qtquick ml-module-qtquick-controls gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad libqt5multimedia5-plugins pyqt5-dev-tools python3-dev python3-setuptools python3-wheel python3-pip ython3-six python3-docopt python3-qtpy python3-pyudev python3-psutil python3-markupsafe python3-opengl python3-vtk9 python3-pyqtgraph python3-simpleeval python3-jinja2 python3-deepdiff python3-sqlalchemy python3-distro
cd ~/dev
git clone https://github.com/kcjengr/qtpyvcp
cd qtpyvcp
python3 -m pip install --editable .
cp scripts/.xsessionrc ~/
Log out and log back in again. This is necessary to ensure .local/bin is now part of your execution search path.
Testing the Install Confirm that QtPyVCP installed correctly and is available by running:
qtpyvcp -h
qtpyvcp -i
Upgrade QtPyVCP
As improvements are made to QtPyVCP you can upgrade the pip install with
python3 -m pip install --upgrade qtpyvcp
cd ~/dev
git clone https://github.com/kcjengr/probe_basic.git
git clone https://github.com/kcjengr/qtpyvcp.conversational-gcode.git
cd ~/dev/probe_basic
git checkout origin/python3
qcompile .
python3 -m pip install --no-deps -e .
cp -r ~/dev/probe_basic/config/probe_basic/ ~/linuxcnc/configs/
cd ~/dev/qtpyvcp.conversational-gcode
git checkout origin/python3
python3 -m pip install -e .
cd dev/
git clone https://github.com/LinuxCNC/mesaflash.git
Install required libraries:
sudo apt install libpci-dev libmd-dev pkg-config
cd mesaflash
sudo make install
That should be all to launch Linuxcnc 2.9 with ProbeBasic GUI
