exe 2026.10.10.2
exe now installs on Windows with one line. This release adds a Windows build (x86-64) and its installer. Linux and macOS get one new setting and two new commands, and are otherwise as in 2026.10.10.
Install
Linux, and macOS 13 or later; x86-64 and ARM64 (Intel and Apple silicon):
curl -fsSL https://exe.v2core.com/install.sh | shWindows 11 on x86-64, in PowerShell:
irm https://exe.v2core.com/install.ps1 | iexAn exe that is already installed moves to this release with exe update.
New
- Windows. The installer asks what it asks elsewhere (where to listen, whether to require a token, whether to add the extra apps), then two things of its own. Whether to set the PC up for VMs: the Windows Hypervisor Platform, the Virtual Machine Platform and QEMU through winget, the one step that needs an administrator. And which drive should hold the VMs, with each fixed drive listed by its free space and what it is. exe installs for one user, starts when you sign in, and shows no window.
exe updateandexe uninstallwork as on the other systems. What it asks and where it puts things: https://exe.v2core.com/docs/getting-started#on-windows vm_dir, on every system: a setting for where the VMs' disks and the base images are kept, for a machine whose home drive is small. https://exe.v2core.com/docs/configexe daemon startandexe daemon restartstart and restart an installed exe by hand.
The files
exe-linux-amd64.tar.gz,exe-linux-arm64.tar.gz: static binaries, with the network helper.exe-darwin-amd64.tar.gz,exe-darwin-arm64.tar.gz: signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple.exe-windows-amd64.tar.gz:exe.exe, static, not signed.exe-apps.tar.gz: Notes, Paint, Tides, Todo, Weather and World Clock, from exe-apps.install.shandinstall.ps1, the installers as https://exe.v2core.com serves them, andSHA256SUMS.
Good to know
- The Windows build is not signed. Fetched by PowerShell, Windows runs it without a question, and Microsoft Defender found nothing in it.
- On Windows, signing out stops exe and its VMs, and the VMs that were running start again at the next sign-in. This was tried by closing the daemon's console the way a sign-out does, not yet by a real sign-out.
- Windows was tried on one PC, with Windows 11 Pro. Not tried there: the administrator prompt of the VM step from a terminal that is not elevated, and turning the hypervisor features on, which that PC already had. Windows 10 from version 1809 has what the installer uses and has not been tried.
- Windows on ARM has no build: exe's VMs there are x86-64 only.
- On a Mac, the first VM brings a macOS alert asking to let exe reach devices on your local network. Its VMs are there: choose Allow.
- The Intel Mac build's VMs have still not been tried on an Intel Mac.
exe 2026.10.10
exe is a personal VM cloud on a machine of your own: one Go binary that runs persistent Linux VMs, a coding agent inside them, an SSH gate, and a reverse proxy that publishes any VM port to a real HTTPS address, with a Mac OS 9 Platinum desktop in the browser to drive it all. https://exe.v2core.com
This is the first release. Until now exe was built from a checkout.
Install
Linux, and macOS 13 or later; x86-64 and ARM64 (Intel and Apple silicon):
curl -fsSL https://exe.v2core.com/install.sh | shThe installer asks where exe should listen, whether to require an API token and whether to add the extra desktop apps, and writes nothing until the last answer. On Linux it offers one more step, with sudo, that sets a KVM machine up for VMs and lists its commands first. What it asks and where it puts things: https://exe.v2core.com/docs/getting-started#installing
exe update moves an installed exe to the next release. exe uninstall removes it and keeps your data.
