What's new since v1.1.0

  • 02-build-resolute.sh --desktop — bakes KDE Plasma + SDDM + konsole + GPU diag tools into the image. Boots to a TTY first (so armbian-firstrun runs cleanly to set root password and create your user); flip to graphical via 03-setup.sh.
  • 03-setup.sh — post-boot helper with five prompts:
    1. Install KDE Plasma desktop (skipped if already there)
    2. Auto-start UI on boot (graphical.target vs multi-user.target)
    3. Migrate root filesystem to NVMe (calls armbian-install)
    4. Put u-boot in SPI flash (only if step 3 = yes — pure-NVMe boot, no SD needed)
    5. Install hardware video decode — builds librockchip-mpp + woodyst/rockchip-vaapi + libva-utils from source so Firefox / Brave / mpv can hardware-decode H.264 / HEVC / VP9 / AV1 via the RK3588 VPU. Verified working with vainfo. ~15-25 min one-time.
      Re-runnable, each step independent.

Asset summary

File What it is When to use
*_resolute_current_6.18.26_desktop.img.xz (~700 MB) Desktop: minimal + KDE Plasma + SDDM + GPU tools. First boot lands at TTY for armbian-firstrun. Daily driver desktop.
*_resolute_current_6.18.26_minimal.img.xz (~300 MB, on v1.1.0) Minimal CLI. Run 03-setup.sh to add Plasma + auto-start + NVMe + HW video. Servers, headless, or "I want full control".

Both are Ubuntu 26.04 (Resolute Raccoon) on mainline 6.18.26 (current branch) with working Mali-G610 GPU acceleration via panthor + Mesa panvk.

Seamless flow

  1. Download the desktop .img.xz and corresponding .sha from this release.
  2. Verify the SHA-256 matches.
  3. Flash with balenaEtcher to a microSD.
  4. Insert into the Orange Pi 5 Pro and power on. First boot lands at a text TTY — armbian-firstrun prompts you to set root password, create your user, set locale/timezone.
  5. After firstrun finishes, run:
    git clone https://github.com/mack42/OrangePi5Pro.git
    cd OrangePi5Pro
    ./03-setup.sh
    Answer the five prompts. Reboot.
  6. (Optional) System now runs from NVMe with HW video decode in browsers.

Verified state

  • Kernel: 6.18.26-current-rockchip64
  • Mesa: 26.0.3, panthor + Mesa panvk
  • Mali-G610 EGL/GLX renderer accelerated; Vulkan 1.4 via panvk
  • VA-API HW video decode: H.264 / HEVC / VP9 / AV1 (via 03-setup.sh step 5)
  • All three patches (uutils-shim deploy, restore, rk3588 boot-delay) baked into the image

Known limits (unchanged from v1.1.0)

  • OpenGL Core profile capped at 3.1 — Mesa panthor still maturing; Collabora's roadmap is Vulkan-focused. Apps needing GL 4.x: use Vulkan instead, or accept the limit. See issue #1 for full state.
  • 5 Pro is community-tier (CSC) in Armbian; some peripherals not validated upstream.
