Things MCP 1.0 connects compatible MCP clients to Things 3 on your Mac through supported automation. It provides twenty tools and is free under the MIT license.

What's new

  • Richer task, project, area and tag editing, including tag assignment/hierarchy, supported timestamps, text increments and populated-project verification.
  • Checklist creation, replacement, clearing, append and prepend; project templates with headings; heading placement; reminder and Evening scheduling; task and project duplication.
  • Selection, counts, existence checks, date/tag filters and resumable searches beyond 5,000 objects.
  • Open-item restoration and separately authorized project, area and tag deletion with scope previews.
  • Updated installation and daily-use guides, shared permissions across clients, and a standalone installed tunnel launcher.

Install or update

  1. Download things-mcp-1.0.0.mcpb below. The .sha256 file provides its checksum.
  2. Open Things, then install the package through your desktop client's extension installer. New installations start read-only. Enable ordinary changes in the extension settings when ready.
  3. Start a new conversation and request a health check. If an updated client only loads some tools, disable/re-enable the extension and start a new conversation.
  4. For checklist/reminder edits and duplication, follow the one-time Things URL setup. Tokens stay in your Mac's Keychain.
  5. For browser ChatGPT or its desktop plugin, follow tunnel setup and update. First-time browser setup currently requires developer commands and an eligible account. The Mac must remain awake, online and signed in.

Verification and limits

75 automated tests passed, alongside typechecking, lint, builds, package checksum/extraction/discovery/read-only/restart checks, native health and dependency audit. The audit reported zero vulnerabilities. Native fixture tests covered the new operations. Both the native desktop client and browser Chat passed create/read/edit/read; Work and the desktop plugin passed health checks. Source, reachable history and the extracted release package passed secret scans.

URL tools explicitly report “Sent to Things; result not verified.” Their receipts confirm dispatch, because Things does not expose complete checklist, heading or reminder read-back. They do not return newly created IDs. Inspect Things before another change and never retry an uncertain write with a new ID.

Native repeat-rule editing, individual existing checklist-row editing by ID and in-place heading editing are not exposed. Whole-library maintenance and native operations that failed verification remain disabled. Fresh-account macOS consent, physical sleep/wake and actual logout/login are not certified.
