DSF Fall 2023 Learner Log Entry #1

Prompts

Following the Rose/Bud/Thorn model:

The rose/bud/thorn learning model is a simple but powerful tool for reflection and improvement. It encourages people to identify positive aspects (roses), challenges (thorns), and opportunities (buds) in a given situation. This information can then be used to plan for the future and make changes as needed.

Here is how the rose/bud/thorn learning model works:

  • Identify roses. What went well? What did you enjoy? What were you proud of?
  • Identify thorns. What challenges did you face? What could have been done better? What did you learn from your mistakes?
  • Identify buds. What opportunities are there for growth? What are you curious about? What new things would you like to try?

Rose:

The highlight from the previous FOSS session, such as something you found particularly interesting. This could also be something you're excited to implement now.

  • FOSS session 1 was about Open Science and has been openminded: I thought I knew the meaning of Open Science, but I was wrong. Before session 1, open science to me was related only to open data and open methodology in order to guarantee the reproducibility of a study. I found extremely interesting to discover the spectrum of the open science and everything that you need both as a mean and as a knowledge to actually do open science.
  • In particular, I have been fascinated by the six pillars of the open science: the Open Educational Resources Pillar has been the most interesting one. I already knew that the internet provides lot of open source materials, but now I can easily access a list of all educational website and free tools that could support my research.

Bud:

Something that you are looking forward to digging into deeper. This could also include ideas on how to apply concepts to your research in the future.

  • Honestly, I am looking forward to work more on GitHub to apply the concepts of open science that we have learned.
  • I am also looking forward to take part into the open science process and to be able to share some of my codes that maybe could help someone in the future.

Thorn:

Something that was challenging that could be worked on, such as anything that wasn't 100% clear and could be elaborated on. Any sticking points should be addressed here.

  • Actually, I do not think there were sticking points in this lesson. However, I would have appreciate to discuss more about the pre-print articles and their pros and cons. I am still having a controversial idea about them and I would really like to discuss and discover more about them.

Additional thought

The lesson 1 reminded me that I need to be more accurate and detailed in the way I provide my code. From now on, I would work like someone would read my code and documentation every time.
