DSF Fall 2023 Learner Log Entry #2

Prompts

Following the Rose/Bud/Thorn model:

The rose/bud/thorn learning model is a simple but powerful tool for reflection and improvement. It encourages people to identify positive aspects (roses), challenges (thorns), and opportunities (buds) in a given situation. This information can then be used to plan for the future and make changes as needed.

Here is how the rose/bud/thorn learning model works:

  • Identify roses. What went well? What did you enjoy? What were you proud of?
  • Identify thorns. What challenges did you face? What could have been done better? What did you learn from your mistakes?
  • Identify buds. What opportunities are there for growth? What are you curious about? What new things would you like to try?

Rose:

The highlight from the previous FOSS session, such as something you found particularly interesting. This could also be something you're excited to implement now.

  • FOSS session 2 was about Data Management Plan (DMP): I found particularly interesting the way DMP can be used as a structure template for researchers to help them how to plan and structure they data both before and after their project ends. I think that is more easy to think about a DMP when you have to collect your data from scratch, but it may be less obvious when you have to access a new dataset. I think that it is still not well known the fact that a data management plan needs to be done also when you get access to a new data to plan how to organize them, how to store them, how to protect them and how to manage them after the publication of the work.
  • I found inspiring the section about data integrity: honestly, I am still too much "selfish" in the organization of my data and until today, I have never thought that much about storage and a possible sharing of my data and a reuse of them. But this can be crucial for my project.
  • It is important to recognize that DMP is crucial for the overall quality and impact of research project.

Bud:

Something that you are looking forward to digging into deeper. This could also include ideas on how to apply concepts to your research in the future.

  • I want to be more aware in the way I organize my data and my methods for analysis. This section helped me in thinking bigger and helped me to understand that the structure of my work can really impact on the results.

Thorn:

Something that was challenging that could be worked on, such as anything that wasn't 100% clear and could be elaborated on. Any sticking points should be addressed here.

  • Actually, I am working with sensitive data and I cannot define my data as open data. Even if from a theoretical point of view I am able to understand the topics, sometimes it is difficult to me to think about a possible application on my data. Maybe I would need more clarification on that.
