0.2.3 — Working context menu
Fixes a real gap: right-clicking gave you no way to create, rename, move or delete anything.
Why it was broken. Obsidian adds its core context-menu items inside the file explorer's own code and only fires the file-menu event afterwards. A plugin listening to that event — or firing it — sees third-party contributions and nothing else. Folder Nav replaces that explorer view, so there was no native menu to borrow and those actions were missing entirely.
Fixed
- New note, New folder (on folders)
- Rename — small dialog, pre-selects the name without the extension, refuses a name that already exists
- Move to… — folder picker, the stand-in for drag-and-drop
- Make a copy
- Delete — hands off to Obsidian's own
promptForDeletion, so your "confirm before deleting" setting still applies - Items are grouped with
setSection()so the menu reads the way Obsidian's own does, with New note / New folder at the top - Other plugins' menu items still appear alongside

minAppVersion1.5.0 → 1.8.7. The official ESLint plugin caughtvault.copyrequiring 1.8.7, which the old floor understated- Back to 0 errors under

Install: download main.js, manifest.json and styles.css below into <vault>/.obsidian/plugins/folder-nav/, or use BRAT with mianfuqu/obsidian-folder-nav.
0.2.2 — Review-ready
Clears everything the official Obsidian ESLint plugin flags, so the plugin can be submitted to the community directory.
Fixed
- Two
no-misused-promiseserrors in the colour picker that would have blocked the automated review - Switched to Obsidian's DOM helpers (
createDiv,createSpan, createFragment) over the rawdocumentequivalents - No longer reads the deprecated
workspace.activeLeaf; re-applying the takeover now always passesactive: false, so it can never pull focus out of the editor
Known warnings
- Settings don't appear in Obsidian's settings search on 1.13+, because this plugin still uses the classic
display()settings API rather than the newer declarative one. That is deliberate: adopting it would raiseminAppVersionto 1.13.0 and drop support for older vaults
Verified with eslint-plugin-obsidianmd — 0 errors, 4 warnings (all the one settings-API deprecation above).
Install: download main.js, manifest.json and styles.css below into <vault>/.obsidian/plugins/folder-nav/, or use BRAT with mianfuqu/obsidian-folder-nav.
0.2.1 — Public API only
Removes the plugin's only use of an undocumented Obsidian API, so it can be submitted to the community directory.
Changed
- Dropped the
app.internalPluginsbridge that kept Obsidian's built-in "Reveal file in navigation" working. The plugin now touches only the public workspace API — nointernalPlugins, noas any, no@ts-ignore - Sidebar membership is decided with
leaf.getRoot() === workspace.leftSplitinstead of the runtime-onlyWorkspaceLeaf.containerEl - Typings moved to
obsidian@1.13.1to match the running app
Note
- Obsidian's own "Reveal file in navigation" now quietly does nothing while the takeover is on — it targets a view that is no longer loaded. It will not open a second file list or throw. Use Folder Nav: Reveal current file in list instead, and rebind your hotkey to it if you had one on the built-in command
Install: download main.js, manifest.json and styles.css below into <vault>/.obsidian/plugins/folder-nav/, or use BRAT with mianfuqu/obsidian-folder-nav.
0.2.0 — Folder colours
Give any folder a colour. Its row is tinted where it sits, and the whole sidebar picks up a wash once you're inside — so you can tell at a glance where you are, which a drill-down list otherwise never shows you.
Added
- Right-click a folder → Folder colour to pick from a 12-colour palette
- Subfolders with no colour of their own inherit the nearest coloured ancestor
- Settings → Folder Nav → Folder colours lists and manages every coloured folder, with a Background intensity slider (
0tints the row only) - Colours follow folders through renames, and are cleaned up on delete
Notes
- Tints are translucent layers over your theme's own background — foreground colours are never touched, so text legibility stays your theme's business
- Also fixes a latent bug where assigning a colour could mutate the plugin's default settings for the rest of the session
Install: download main.js, manifest.json and styles.css below into <vault>/.obsidian/plugins/folder-nav/, or use BRAT with mianfuqu/obsidian-folder-nav.
0.1.0
First release.
Replaces the sidebar file tree with drill-down navigation: one folder at a time, with a breadcrumb to walk back up.

main.js,manifest.jsonandstyles.cssbelow - Put them in
<your-vault>/.obsidian/plugins/folder-nav/ - Enable Folder Nav in Settings → Community plugins
Or install with BRAT using mianfuqu/obsidian-folder-nav.
Known limitations
- No drag-and-drop to move files, no F2 rename, no multi-select — use the context menu
- Custom folder order from other plugins isn't reproduced
- Relies on undocumented Obsidian APIs; the failure mode falls back to the native file list
