Mitcad 0.13.1: fixes to editing placed components and to threads

Choose a tag to compare

@mitcad mitcad released this 18 Oct 23:19
  • Editing a feature of a placed component also shows its construction
planes and axes where the component is placed.
  • A modelled thread that covers its whole face, leaving no plain piece of
it, is listed among the design's threads again.

Mitcad 0.13.0: a glass view cube, BUILD previews at their real length, edits of placed components highlighted in place

Choose a tag to compare

@mitcad mitcad released this 18 Oct 19:12

View

  • The view cube is dark smoked glass with light engraved-looking names,
bevelled edges and corners to click, and axes in colour (X red, Y green,
Z blue); over a light background it turns to frosted light glass. The
Home button above it is a capsule of the same glass.

BUILD

  • A profile's preview shows its body at the auto length it will have, and
hovering a profile's side previews the placement there before the click.

Editing

  • Editing a feature of a placed component (a thread, fillet or chamfer of
a part screwed into another) highlights its faces where the component
is placed, not in its own coordinates.

Collaboration

  • Windows: a live session's connection to its broker no longer drops when
a read is still under way under load.

Mitcad 0.12.0: designs in any web browser, a floating window layout without a solid bar, BUILD with fewer clicks

Choose a tag to compare

@mitcad mitcad released this 18 Oct 16:59

Web viewer

  • File › Export › Web page writes a design as one HTML file that opens in
any browser, offline: colours and materials, the component tree, named
views, measuring, and a person to walk through the model (Shift runs,
the right mouse button passes walls), also on a phone or tablet.
  • File › Project › Web Viewer gives a project a web folder: an index of
its designs with thumbnails and a page per design, updated on each Save
and kept in the project's versions.

Window

  • Windows and Linux start in the Floating layout with the Browser's Rows
background; Preferences can switch both, also while Docked.
  • In the Floating layout on Windows and Linux only the menu bar stays at
the top; the title row's controls and each toolbar group float over the
view, and clicks between them reach the view.
  • The Browser card grows with its rows down to the timeline before it
scrolls; in the Rows background its scroll bar is on the left.
  • A design opens with the root active; a design whose tree is longer than
the Browser opens with its components folded. Collapse All keeps the
    root open.

BUILD

  • A square corner on a profile's end lies on the end face, flush with the
outer side, without a mitre; corners at other angles are mitred.
  • The part and the connector are chosen from a picture tile that opens
the part picker; Placement and Length are icon buttons; the More button
    is gone.

Mitcad 0.11.0: a picture picker for parts, easier BUILD frames, the Floating layout on every platform, ghosts outside the active component

Choose a tag to compare

@mitcad mitcad released this 18 Oct 13:03

BUILD

  • A part placed on another's side keeps the end or the middle it snapped
to, with Offset and From always shown, and stays there when the other
    part's length changes.
  • A click on a profile's end continues it straight, or near an edge turns
a corner towards that edge; corners are aligned flush and mitred on the
bisector by default. The view shows the result before the click.
  • Snaps are at least a dozen pixels wide on the screen.

Parts

  • A floating picker shows the library's parts as pictures, by group,
system and search, with starred parts and groups first, Favourites, and
the parts the design already uses. Insert from Library and BUILD's part
    fields use it.

Window

  • Preferences › Display › Layout chooses the Docked or the Floating
layout on every platform; in the Floating layout the Browser can show
each row on a box of its own, the view visible between them.
  • While a component is active, everything outside it is drawn faded and
picks take the active component first; both can be turned off.

Modelling

  • New designs allow everything by default: sketches on other components'
faces, components inside Part1. The Part and Assembly presets stay
    available.
  • More fillet ends and corners are built, and blends cut by a narrow face
    they roll over.
  • Windows: a crash inside the geometry kernel is reported as the kernel's
    error.

Import

  • .ipt: sketch texts, with the file's own glyph outlines while the font is
    missing.
  • .rvt: large projects import much faster.

Mitcad 0.10.0: easier BUILD placement, sections and booleans that survive kernel crashes, threads and spiral stairs as clean solids

Choose a tag to compare

@mitcad mitcad released this 18 Oct 07:16

BUILD

  • Parts go into the nearest component that takes components, so a new
design needs no component activated first. The first part is placed by
Enter at the origin or by a plane pick, standing along X, Y or Z.
  • The panel grows as the placement needs it, and only usable targets
highlight. Side placements snap flush with the target's ends and never
    overhang it.

Modelling

  • Threads of one profile on a cylinder, including threads whose turns
meet, are built as single solids, and booleans on them stay fast.
  • Spiral stairs with helical stringers join into clean solids. More
fillet corners and chamfer ends are built.
  • Split regions keep all their pieces, and cut pieces keep their ids. The
Dimension tool sets signed dimensions, also between points.
  • Sketches solve coincidences within the tolerance. Sections of bodies
can be used as sketch curves, and projections follow chains of edges.
  • Section Analysis reports a crash inside the geometry kernel as an
error instead of closing the app. Mesh bodies take part in sections and
    booleans, and building-scale models mesh.

Import

  • .rvt projects: stair runs, risers and landings, multistory stair
copies, rails with their supports, fillets, helix corners and plumb
ends, trimmed mullions and slab edges.
  • Linked planes and curves come in with their own components; cones of a
tiny angle are read as cylinders.

Automation

  • The MCP interface reports failed features, inserts parts, saves and
opens live documents and sets the camera.

User interface

  • The docked sketch palette scrolls, and the Projects tree indents as
    the Browser does.

Mitcad 0.9.0: imports that tell you where they deviate, .rvt projects as their 3D views show them, more parts in the library

Choose a tag to compare

@mitcad mitcad released this 17 Oct 09:32

Import

  • Imports list the results that deviate from the file's own geometry and,
on request, keep them parametric; the app asks about them after the
import report. A modelled thread's angle is measured on its own
    component's bodies.
  • .rvt projects: elements as the project's 3D view shows them, openings in
embedded walls, roofs over part of a wall, and every feature checked
against the geometry the file keeps; the summary and mitcad-cli say so.

Libraries

  • The parts library (mitcad-parts 2.2.0) adds the rest of the supplier's
parts: slot accessories, connector and mounting plates, slot nuts and
covers, tubes, bearings, feet, castors, handles, more linear parts and
workshop parts, 720 parts in all. Library designs hold their features in
    the root.

Windows

  • File paths outside ASCII (letters such as a with diaeresis, the degree
sign) work in Mitcad and mitcad-cli.

Mitcad 0.8.0: the BUILD tab for slot-profile assemblies, one parts library, more .rvt shapes, textures rendered in their true colours

Choose a tag to compare

@mitcad mitcad released this 17 Oct 07:12

BUILD

  • A new BUILD tab assembles frames from slot profiles: Profile, Panel,
Linear Part, Connector and Fasteners place parts from the library on the
design, with lengths bound to the frame, end machining (Ends), Flip and
Rotate 90 deg. Connectors are previewed in place with their pictures,
junctions show on the hover and the length follows the cursor. Cut List
and Parts List (also as PDF) list the stock and the parts.
  • The profile library has slot profiles of six systems with their nuts,
end caps, connectors and panels, and guide rails, carriages, bearings,
housings, shaft supports, lead screws, belts, pulleys, gears and racks.
Library entries carry supplier fields; mitcad-cli library searches
    BUILD candidates.

Libraries

  • One parts library (mitcad-parts 2.0.0) replaces the fastener library and
holds the fasteners and the BUILD parts; parts recorded under the old
    library still resolve.

Import

  • .rvt projects: walls attached to a roof, floor or reference plane follow
its surface; every door, window and opening cuts its wall (or the report
says why); wall sweeps, slab edges and rails are swept from their profile
types' own loops, with returns and mitres; V mullions, trimmed mullions,
spiral stair runs and spiral rails along helical paths.
  • .ipt parts: outlines of profiles in sketches of construction geometry
only, flagged lines bounding short profile parts, helix sweeps with exact
    cylindrical sides.
  • Imports leave out empty bodies with a warning.

Modelling

  • More fillets and chamfers build: roundings rolling on a narrow face's far
edge, meeting in a crease, ending tangentially in the face at their end,
over ribs up to flush blocks, running into an earlier rounding; chamfers
wider than a face of their edges.
  • Sketch fixes: Trim, Extend, Offset, Mirror on ellipses, region holes,
snapping in Arc, Slot, Ellipse, Spline and Polygon, the origin as one
fixed point, and Esc and dimension editing.

Interface

  • Find in Design finds components and bodies by name.
  • Section Analysis caps take the component's colour with a visible hatch.
  • The view's context menu has a Hide submenu; Edit Appearances assigns to
all bodies of the selected faces; New Project accepts a pasted git
    address.
  • The Docked ribbon fits its toolbar instead of moving groups into the
    overflow.

Rendering

  • Base-colour textures render in their true colours (they were washed out).
  • MCP: appearance and render-settings calls that read no file run as model
    commands.

Mitcad 0.7.0: real shapes from .rvt projects, more fillets and chamfers that build, derived designs

Choose a tag to compare

@mitcad mitcad released this 16 Oct 06:41

Import

  • .rvt projects: doors, windows, curtain panels and mullions, furniture
and the other family elements come in with their real shapes from the
geometry the file keeps, instead of boxes. Curtain panels and mullions,
rails, wall sweeps, slab edges, ceilings, stair runs and landings are
built as features and checked against the project's IFC export (or the
element's stored box). Members of placed groups come in. The IFC
export next to a project is used as a reference and a source. Boxes
that remain are hidden unless the element is structural, and each has a
report line saying why. Large projects import several times faster.
  • .f3d designs: derived items come in as linked copies of the other
designs' bodies, placed as in the source design. Roundings that run over
cut-outs or protrusions of their faces are built with them cleared and
put back. Designs with many face appearances open fast again.
  • .ipt parts: cuts through threaded holes and counterbores, coils on
bores whose seam steps, joins that the exact boolean loses, and sketch
texts and splines through points (their outlines come in as fixed
curves). Sheet folds across cut windows, double bends and pattern
    directions read.
  • A fillet or chamfer that still fails names the corner or the step where
the geometry kernel stopped and why.

Modelling

  • Many more fillets and chamfers build: roundings that end in the face
they run into, that vanish at their end, that end across a periodic
face's seam, that run past rounded corners or round a boss on a
stepped seam; chamfers that end where the face at the end is tangent to
both faces, that consume a strip along a chain of edges, or a flange's
top. Walked fillet faces get their exact analytic surfaces.
  • A thread's sizing moves the chamfers at the face's ends with it.
  • Panel commands give the first value field the keyboard once the
    required picks are made.
  • The Bend panel offers double bends.

Fixes

  • The solver's analysis no longer overflows on some sketches.

Mitcad 0.6.0: building models from .rvt files, texture maps in rendering, thread end chamfers and sturdier fillets

Choose a tag to compare

@mitcad mitcad released this 15 Oct 07:09

Import

  • .rvt import, phase 2: walls (with joins and edited profiles), floors, slabs and their cuts, columns and beam sections, roofs, stair runs, levels, grids and linked models come in as features with their parameters; the application asks for linked models it cannot find.
  • .f3d import: edge inputs are decided by the curves the file stores; designs with many face appearances open much faster; coils whose boolean fails are retried; strips narrower than the import tolerance no longer break fillets.

Modelling

  • Thread: an optional chamfer at the thread ends.
  • Fillets: many more corner cases succeed where roundings end, meet or cross (geometry kernel patches).
  • Move Component carries the features that place the occurrence.
  • Editing a feature previews it as the edit, also with the marker rolled back before it.

Sketch

  • Circumscribed polygons keep their regular shape.
  • Fully constrained curves and centre lines are drawn over a halo, easier to read on any background.

Rendering and appearance

  • Normal, roughness, metalness and occlusion maps in rendering.
  • Edit Appearances: texture sources, local texture folders with a search browser, and Poly Haven as an online source.
  • No ground when the camera looks from below; meshes always face out of their solids.

Interface

  • Component Colors: a temporary colour per component in the shaded and wireframe views.
  • Design browser: Collapse All; picks in the tree no longer scroll it.
  • Library browser: an Update button for all enabled libraries.
  • Selection measurements shown; floating controls polished.

Fixes

  • Live MCP: busy application instances get the full connection timeout.
  • Dependencies: rustls 0.23.46 (security advisories).

Mitcad 0.5.0: IFC and .rvt imports, live debugging over MCP, sketching from bodies

Choose a tag to compare

@mitcad mitcad released this 14 Oct 20:05

Import

  • IFC files (IFC2x3, IFC4, IFC4.3, also .ifczip) open through File > Open:
extruded, revolved and swept solids as features, breps and face sets as
bodies, openings as cuts, storeys as components with their level planes,
grids as axes, mapped items as components with occurrences.
  • .rvt projects of the 2024 and 2025 releases open with every element
placed on its level, as its saved mesh or as a box; families and older
releases open with their metadata and preview.
  • .f3d designs: large designs read faster, the first state's large bodies
are healed while the file is read, history states are named once,
fallbacks keep the bodies that match the file, and base features adopt
their stored shapes; an allocation failure is reported by the operation
    that failed.
  • .ipt parts: tapered profiles with holes, holes touching the outline,
coils with flat ends and tapered coils, and changes checked by the faces
    they changed.
  • Sheet metal from .f3d and .ipt: hems, double bends, joined faces,
flanges on several edges, patterns and mirrors of sheet features.
  • Driven dimensions of imported files map to their reference parameters.

Sketching

  • The Dimension tool picks body edges and vertices in the sketch plane, and
the Point tool snaps to body corners and edge midpoints; they are
projected, linked, only when the dimension or point is made.
  • Clean Up Stale Projections removes projected curves that no longer
match their source and nothing uses, trims the lines a profile still
uses, and is offered under the Sketch Palette's warning; clicking a
warning selects the curves it is about.
  • A constraint that makes an older one redundant replaces it (never a
dimension), with a hint; refused snapped constraints say why.
  • The sketch's axes, origin and the pointer's coordinates are shown; shown
sketches keep their constraint colours outside editing, and fully
constrained curves read on a dark background.
  • Dimension names can be picked into feature panels; angle dimensions
measure the sector the cursor is in.
  • Create Sketch has the shortcut Alt+S (Option+S on macOS).

Modelling and components

  • Extrude chooses Join, Cut or New Body from where the profile and the
distance go, until you pick one.
  • Faces, edges and vertices a sketch change renamed are found again, with
    a warning on the feature.
  • Hover shows the whole tangent chain in Fillet, Chamfer and the face
    tools.
  • Many more fillet and chamfer cases build: roundings ending at vertices
and corners, rolling-ball blends, chamfers wider than a face beside them.
  • Renaming a component renames its only default-named body; a new
component refused by its parent's policy goes beside it; a component's
first sketch may attach to another component's face by default.
  • Light bulbs work in every mode, also while picking a sketch plane and
    during commands.
  • Previews keep hidden bodies hidden and draw component bodies where
    their occurrences put them.

The application

  • A new window style for the docked layout: raised panels, panel titles
and one accent colour; a Windows 11 frame.
  • Help > Open Log Folder and a debug log switch in Preferences
(--debug-log); the busy cursor can no longer stay on.
  • Live MCP: an agent connected to the running application can read its
state, log and view, run sketch and UI commands with the user's undo,
    and save.
  • Fixes: a crash on exit after the rendered view, picking during model
jobs, Metal rendering on lower GPU families.
  • Dependencies: rustls 0.23.46 and ruzstd 0.9.1 (security advisories).
