Appendix: Biological databases

Mitja M. Zdouc edited this page Oct 15, 2026 · 5 revisions

MITE relies on and cross-links with several biological databases.

The most important databases are UniProt and NCBI GenPept. These databases store the protein sequences of tailoring enzymes, which MITE then annotates further.

The other databases are used for cross-referencing the MITE entry with additional genomic and chemical information.

ID Database What it is Looks like
GenPept NCBI Protein Protein entry of a GenBank gene product (source) AHH99918.1 AKQ99279.1
(part after the dot = version)
UniProtKB UniProt Protein entry with sequence and functional information. Reviewed, manually curated entries have a gold star. P95480 Q8KI76 A1E280
UniParc UniProt Archive Archive of all protein sequences, including ones without a (current) UniProtKB entry. Can be used as a fallback option if the UniProt ID is not available. UPI000003CA9F UPI00000BF096
RHEA ID Rhea Repository of stoichiometrically balanced chemical and transport reactions. 37851
EC Number ExPASy Repository of enzyme reactions. 1.21.1.1
MIBiG MIBiG Repository of biosynthetic gene clusters. BGC0000001
