Introduction
The MITE database (Minimum Information about a Tailoring Enzyme) is a community-driven database for the characterization of tailoring enzymes. These enzymes play important roles in the biosynthesis of secondary or specialized metabolites.
Knowledge about reaction and substrate specificities of tailoring enzymes is essential for understanding biosynthesis, but this information is often only available in machine-incompatible formats, such as figures or narrative articles. This limits the applicability of data for bioinformatics and machine learning.
To address this issue, we created the MITE database. This expert-curated dataabse summarizes experimental data on the reactions and substrate specificities of these tailoring enzymes in both human- and machine-readable form, using the reaction SMARTS chemical transformation language. Additional metadata on co-factors, taxonomic, and genomic context is also available, briding chemical and genomic information. The MITE database can be used as knowledgebase, as parts catalog for synthetic biology, or for machine learning applications.
MITE is a community-driven database, meaning that all entries are made by members of the natural product biosynthesis community, for the community. We invite our users to enter information about tailoring enzymes in MITE, so that we can all benefit from it. All user submissions are reviewed by expert volunteers before they are made available to the public. All data on MITE is available for free, forever, with no strings attached.
