Locker Manager 0.13.1

@github-actions github-actions released this 25 Oct 07:18

Download

Computer File
Windows (64-bit, Intel/AMD or ARM) Locker-Manager-Setup-0.13.1.exe
Mac (Apple silicon or Intel) Locker-Manager-0.13.1-universal.dmg

If you already have Locker Manager installed, you do not need to download anything: it updates itself.

First time opening it

Locker Manager is free and open source, and is not yet registered with Apple or Microsoft, so the first time you open it your computer shows a one-off "unrecognised app" warning. The app is safe and runs entirely on your own computer. Here is exactly what to click.

On Windows

  1. Run the downloaded Locker-Manager-Setup file. If your browser asks, choose Keep.
  2. If a blue "Windows protected your PC" screen appears, click the small More info link.
  3. Click Run anyway, then follow the installer.

On a Mac

  1. Open the downloaded .dmg and drag Locker Manager into Applications.
  2. Open Locker Manager from Applications once. macOS will say it cannot check it and offer only Done. Click Done.
  3. Open System Settings, then Privacy & Security, scroll to the bottom and click Open Anyway, then Open Anyway again.
  4. You only do this once. After that, open it like any other app.

Updates install themselves on Windows and on a Mac. On a Mac this needs the app to be in your Applications folder and your account to be allowed to change it; otherwise the app tells you when a new version is out and opens this download page, and you install the new version over the old one. On a Mac, copies older than 0.11.4 need one update by hand: they either cannot update themselves (before 0.11.0) or stop after their first update (0.11.0 to 0.11.3, which show "Could not check for updates: ENOTEMPTY"). Install 0.11.4 or later from this page once, over the old one. Your school's file is not touched, and from then on it updates itself.

What's new in 0.13.1

New

  • the registration form says most schools are approved the same day

What's new in 0.13.0

Locker Manager now asks each school to register once. Registration is free. It lets Dave Armstrong, who makes Locker Manager, know which schools use it.

Register before you update, if you can. Dave checks each registration by hand and usually replies within a day. After you update, a copy with no key opens your school's file look-only until the key arrives. You can still look up students and lockers, print lists and export without codes. You cannot change anything, show or print codes, or make a new file.

How to register: open Locker Manager and click Register this school, or use the form at https://mrdavearms.github.io/locker-manager/register/. Type your name, school, email address and state. You get a key by email. Paste it in once and click Register.

  • One key covers your whole school. It is saved in your school's file, so every computer that opens the file is registered.
  • IT can put the key on every computer with a registration.key file. The IT guide has the folder.
  • The demo school and updates always work, with or without a key.
  • Your privacy: registering sends your name, school, email address, state and optional role, once, when you click Send. Nothing from your school's file is ever sent, and the app never sends anything to check a key.
Every change

New

  • say registering is free, and add an optional notes box
  • connect the app and website to the live registration service
  • a release cannot ship without the key checker, and Dave can make a key by hand
  • the service that receives registrations and emails keys
  • register, enter a key, and see who the copy is registered to
  • send a registration from the app, with website and email fallbacks
  • an unregistered copy can look at a school's file but not change it
  • keep the key on the computer, in the school's file, or from IT
  • decide whether a copy is registered from the keys it finds
  • signed registration keys that the app checks offline

Fixed

  • the IT key file path uses Windows rules on Windows and Mac rules on a Mac
  • Windows and Mac copies no longer treat each other's files as tampered with
  • say "in most circumstances" free wherever the app says it is free
  • keep the registrations list columns lined up, and set notes apart in Dave's email
  • a flood can never fill the list, and Dave is told once a day
  • the privacy note names every detail collected and where it is kept
  • show keys Dave made by hand as "made by hand"
  • a busy day pauses the emails instead of turning schools away
  • the registration form never sticks on "Sending…" or fails without a word
  • keep Dave's address in one place and accept only the email the app makes
  • stop the form being used to send email in Dave's name
  • one decision per registration, the admin token never in an address, no stored IP
  • refuse keys spelled with spare characters that decode the same
  • an installed copy always loads its own window, never an address from the environment
  • treat a backup that unzips past 512 MB as damaged
  • remove database triggers and views the app did not make when a file opens
  • restoring a backup keeps the current PIN and history
  • stop a small crafted spreadsheet from using up all memory
  • ignore school colours that are not #RRGGBB when reading the file
  • changing the PIN now waits after five wrong tries, like unlocking

Documentation

  • how to run the make-key command around the gcloud re-sign-in problem
  • registration is decision 31; free for schools wording; notes in the privacy summary
  • say when the app reads registration.key
  • keep the firewall table whole and fix the demo-off wording
  • match the banner and menu wording
  • explain registration to staff, IT and future work
  • no grace period, keys from dave@, ask for the school's state
  • record the security audit fixes and say plainly that updates are not publisher-checked
  • design and implementation plan for school registration
  • record the efficiency pass and the code batch rule; add a frozen-window hand check

Build and packaging

  • refuse to publish the site while the registration form has the placeholder address

Install 0.11.4 or later from this page once, over the old one. Your school's file is not touched, and from then on it updates itself.

What's new in 0.12.0

This version makes Locker Manager safer to rely on. Nothing changes in how you use it day to day.

  • If your school's file will not open, the first screen now has Open a backup…. It puts a backup in the file's place and keeps the damaged file as a backup too.
  • Changes are never lost quietly. If the file cannot be saved when you close Locker Manager, it asks first: try again, close anyway (your changes are kept as a backup on this computer), or cancel. An update waits until your changes are saved. If Windows shuts down with the file open, your changes are saved or kept as a backup, and the next start tells you where.
  • No more waiting after a crash. If Locker Manager stopped suddenly on your computer, you can carry on editing straight away instead of waiting 10 minutes.
  • Copies made by OneDrive while two people edit at once are now found while the file is open, and the bottom bar says so.
  • Updates on Windows no longer try again and again when they cannot install (for example on a computer where only IT may install programs). The new version is offered on the download page instead.
  • If Locker Manager cannot start, it now shows a page saying why, instead of staying invisible, and it still fetches a fixed version.

After this update: once one computer has opened your school's file with this version, computers still on an older version open it read-only until they update. They update themselves the next time they start.

Mac users on 0.11.0 to 0.11.3: if updates show "ENOTEMPTY", install this version by hand once from the Mac download link above. From then on, updates install themselves.

Install 0.11.4 or later from this page once, over the old one. Your school's file is not touched, and from then on it updates itself.

What's new in 0.11.4

Mac users: install this version by hand, once. Versions 0.11.0 to 0.11.3 on a Mac update themselves once, then stop. After that, every check shows "Could not check for updates: ENOTEMPTY: directory not empty". This version fixes the fault, but a Mac that already shows the message cannot fetch the fix by itself. Click Open the download page on that message, or use the Mac download link above. Then drag Locker Manager into Applications and choose Replace. Your school's file is not touched. From then on, updates install themselves again.

Windows computers are not affected and update as usual.

Every change

Fixed

  • Macs keep updating after their first self-update
  • tighter checks on links, files, permissions and IT's managed settings
  • undo keeps the record of what was printed, and a file that cannot be updated no longer stays locked
  • a year level typed as "Year 8" or "Year 12" now matches students, in imports and exclusions

Documentation

  • IT guide, user guide and release notes brought up to date, and each audit says what is fixed
  • the README and website describe version 0.11.3, and every release keeps them current

Build and packaging

  • bump actions/deploy-pages from 4.0.5 to 5.0.1 (#3)
  • bump actions/upload-pages-artifact from 3.0.1 to 5.0.0 (#2)
  • bump actions/setup-node from 5.0.0 to 7.0.0 (#4)

What's new in 0.9.0

When two versions of the file meet, you can now keep the other version and add your own changes to it, choosing them one by one; any that no longer fit are named and skipped, and both versions are still kept as backups. On the History screen, Put back to before this… returns one student or locker to how it was, from the backup kept before the change. Scanning a label's optional QR code on a computer with the school's file open goes straight to that locker. Also fixed: undo no longer fails after a code was shown for a new locker; codes are recorded before any file holding them is written; held-back letters come back under "changed" once their lock is sorted out; a code set made during the year is kept for next year; and the Changes report includes the whole first day. Settings now has a search box.

What's new in 0.7.0

Locker Manager now guides you through starting a new school year. On Home, Start next year walks through ten steps: print the end-of-year checklist so students reset their own locks to 0 0 0 0 on their last day, record which were reset, archive the year (with a typed confirmation and a backup kept first), optionally move students up a year level, import, make next year's codes, give out lockers, print, and reset any remaining locks. Progress is kept in the file, so anyone can carry on. Keyed lockers now have a key register: key numbers, and keys given out, returned, lost, replaced or charged for.

What's new in 0.6.0

Locker Manager now prints student letters, reports and exports. Each student gets a one-page letter with their locker, their code in boxes, and only the sections that suit their kind of lock; letters waiting on a lock reset are held back, and nothing prints unless every letter fits on one page. Change the letter in Settings, Letters: choose the sections, write the words, add your lock maker's pictures, and add other languages. Reports include group lists for teachers, a CONFIDENTIAL master list, lockers by bank, locks to reset, an end-of-year reset checklist, a sign-off sheet, a key register and changes since a date, each as PDF, print, Excel or CSV. The whole file can be exported to one Excel workbook and turned back into a data file. Letters and anything with codes print only while the file is open for editing, because every printed code is recorded.
