MacRAR 1.4.4

@mstcvk mstcvk released this 17 Oct 19:00

MacRAR 1.4.4

Fixes

  • "Extract Here" on a tar.gz whose entries start with ./ no longer shows a false "already exists" warning; selecting items inside such archives extracts them (#3, reported by ahmetturk, fixed by IACBI).
  • Creating or adding to a RAR archive no longer silently skips files whose names differ only in Unicode normalisation (typically Turkish and other accented names): rar is run without -r, so it adds exactly the chosen items instead of matching them by name (#9, reported by ilkerdrb, analysis by remrearas).
  • File Associations: unticking a type (for example DMG) now hands it back to the app that had it before, instead of leaving MacRAR as its handler.
  • Application bundles (.app, .framework, .pkg bundles…) inside an archive appear as a single item with the app icon, like in Finder, instead of an expandable folder. Extraction still copies the whole bundle.
  • macOS metadata in archives (__MACOSX folders and ._ AppleDouble files) is hidden in the window and skipped on extraction, as Archive Utility does.
  • Documentation: Finder Quick Actions (GitHub edition) and app services (App Store edition) are enabled in different System Settings panes; README and SUPPORT now describe both, including the macOS 13–14 location (#6, reported by IACBI).
  • release.sh publish attaches only this version's section of RELEASE_NOTES.md to the GitHub release (#7, reported by IACBI).

Thanks to ahmetturk, IACBI, ilkerdrb and remrearas.

MacRAR 1.4.3

@mstcvk mstcvk released this 10 Oct 04:47

MacRAR 1.4.3

Signed with Developer ID and notarized by Apple: open the DMG, drag MacRAR to Applications, done. Or brew install --cask mstcvk/tap/macrar.

Finder and first launch

  • Fixed a broken type declaration in Info.plist: CAB, ARJ, LZH, ZST, CPIO, WIM, DEB, RPM, MSI, CHM, VHD and other 7-Zip formats now show the right-click commands and appear in the File Associations dialog.
  • When launched from the DMG, Downloads or the Desktop, MacRAR offers to move itself to Applications and relaunch, since the Finder menu and file associations only work from there.
  • The first-launch File Associations prompt and the update alert no longer pop up on top of an open password or progress dialog.
  • Old-style multi-volume sets (name.rar + name.r00…, name.zip + name.z01…) selected together are processed once.

Other fixes

  • "Download" in the update alert fetches the DMG directly.
  • Dropping a mixed selection onto an open archive adds every dropped item (archive files were silently skipped).
  • Opening an unreadable file no longer closes a window you already had open.
  • New Help menu: user guide, release notes, report a problem.

Requirements: macOS 13+ (Apple Silicon and Intel). Creating RAR archives needs RARLAB's RAR for macOS (paid, 40-day trial); everything else is free.

Also on the Mac App Store as Easy Mac Archiver.

MacRAR 1.4.2

Signed with Developer ID and notarized by Apple: open the DMG, drag MacRAR to Applications, done.

New icon

  • A new icon — a 3D stack of archive layers — replaces the old one with the "RAR" wordmark ("RAR" is a trademark of RARLAB).

Includes everything from 1.4.1: extracted files inherit the downloaded archive's quarantine flag (#1).

Requirements: macOS 13+ (Apple Silicon and Intel). Creating RAR archives needs RARLAB's RAR for macOS (paid, 40-day trial); everything else is free.

Also on the Mac App Store as Easy Mac Archiver.

MacRAR 1.4.1

@mstcvk mstcvk released this 09 Oct 16:48

MacRAR 1.4.1

Signed with Developer ID and notarized by Apple: open the DMG, drag MacRAR to Applications, done.

Security fix

  • Files extracted from an archive you downloaded now inherit the archive's quarantine flag (com.apple.quarantine), exactly like Archive Utility does. Before, an app or script inside a downloaded archive could run without the usual Gatekeeper check (the macOS counterpart of Windows' CVE-2025-0411). Fixes #1.

Reliability

  • MacRAR 1.3 crashed at launch on Macs set to a language other than Turkish (a duplicated entry in the English string table). 1.4 already fixed it; the build now refuses to compile if that ever happens again.

Requirements: macOS 13+ (Apple Silicon and Intel). Creating RAR archives needs RARLAB's RAR for macOS (paid, 40-day trial); everything else is free.

Also on the Mac App Store as Easy Mac Archiver.

MacRAR 1.4

Signed with Developer ID and notarized by Apple: open the DMG, drag MacRAR to Applications, done.

Licence clean-up

  • RARLAB's rar and unrar are no longer bundled: their licence does not allow redistributing rar separately. All archives, RAR included, are now opened with the bundled 7-Zip engine (RAR4, RAR5, encrypted and multi-part sets).
  • Creating or modifying RAR archives now uses your own copy of RARLAB's "RAR for macOS": MacRAR shows the download page and lets you point it at the downloaded file once (Settings → RAR tool). ZIP, 7z and TAR creation need nothing extra. RAR 4 creation was removed (RAR 7 no longer supports it).

Fixed

  • The progress bar stayed at 0% while a single large file was being extracted from 7z/ZIP archives.

New

  • Universal app: runs natively on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.
  • Settings shows the RAR tool status with install/remove buttons.

Requirements: macOS 13+. Creating RAR archives needs RARLAB's RAR for macOS (paid, 40-day trial); everything else is free.

Also on the Mac App Store as Easy Mac Archiver (sandboxed, no RAR creation).

MacRAR 1.3

Signed with Developer ID and notarized by Apple: open the DMG, drag MacRAR to Applications, done.

UI / UX

  • Click a column header to sort (folders stay first); column widths and sort order are remembered.
  • Keyboard: Return opens the selected file, Space shows a Quick Look preview (⌘Y from the View menu), ⌥⌘→ / ⌥⌘← expand or collapse everything, ⌘R refreshes, ⇧⌘R shows the archive in Finder.
  • Quick Look preview of files inside the archive, with arrow keys moving through the list.
  • Empty window now has Open Archive… and New Archive… buttons and accepts dropped files.
  • File → Open Recent lists the last archives.
  • Settings window (⌘,): default format and level for quick compression, reveal-in-Finder behaviour, update check, interface language.
  • Create Archive dialog remembers the last format and options; also encrypt file names is only enabled once a password is typed.
  • Overwrite prompt gained a Skip option; after extraction the extracted items are selected in Finder; after compression the new archive is revealed.
  • Password prompts have a Show password toggle; error dialogs show the engine output with a Copy Details button.
  • The Open dialog now lists every supported archive type, not only RAR.
  • Temporary files from previews and double-click opens are cleaned up when the app quits.

Highlights

  • RAR, 7z, ZIP, TAR and 30+ formats; encrypted and multi-volume archives; Finder context-menu entries; English and Turkish interface; automatic update check.

Requirements: macOS 13+, Apple Silicon. Creating RAR archives needs a WinRAR licence (bundled rar is the trial); everything else is free.

MacRAR 1.2

Choose a tag to compare

@mstcvk mstcvk released this 09 Oct 13:38

MacRAR 1.2

Signed with Developer ID and notarized by Apple: open the DMG, drag MacRAR to Applications, done.

Fixed

  • Archives created without a password were encrypted. RAR archives created or extended by MacRAR 1.0/1.1 without entering a password were silently encrypted because rar interprets the -p- switch (meant for unrar) as the password "-". If you have such an archive, open it with the password - (a single hyphen) or re-create it with 1.2. ZIP and 7z archives were never affected.

New

  • Update check: MacRAR looks at GitHub Releases once a day and offers to download a newer version; MacRAR → Check for Updates… does it on demand. The check is anonymous and sends nothing but the request.

Highlights

  • Browse, extract, test, create and edit RAR, 7z, ZIP, TAR and 30+ other formats (RARLAB unrar/rar + 7-Zip 7zz bundled).
  • Encrypted archives (RAR, 7z, ZIP/AES), multi-volume sets, drag-to-Finder extraction, progress window with ETA.
  • Finder context-menu entries, English and Turkish interface following the system language.

Requirements: macOS 13+, Apple Silicon. Creating RAR archives needs a WinRAR licence (bundled rar is the trial); everything else is free.

@mstcvk mstcvk released this 09 Oct 13:24

MacRAR 1.1

New in 1.1

  • Finder right-click menu: Open with MacRAR, MacRAR: Extract Here, MacRAR: Extract to Folder (for archives) and Compress with MacRAR… (for any selection) now appear directly in the context menu instead of only inside the Quick Actions submenu. Extract To…, Test and the one-click Compress (RAR) stay in Quick Actions.
  • The installer enables the Finder services automatically; no trip to System Settings needed.
  • Local builds are signed with the Developer ID certificate when one is present.
