What's new in XFB 3.141592653

This release makes XFB genuinely usable without sight. The accessibility layer that shipped with previous versions was never actually starting; it does now, and the gaps that left behind have been closed.

Accessibility

  • The screen reader, audio feedback, live region and braille services now initialize at startup — previously they were registered but never started, so none of them ran.
  • Announcements carry their text to the screen reader, so track changes, pausing, resuming and warnings are spoken.
  • Every icon-only button has a name. State that was shown only by colour (pause, recording) is now also readable as text.
  • Help → Tutorial for Blind Users: a keyboard-navigable guide to running the station by ear.
  • Options → Accessibility Preferences is reachable at last.

Keyboard control

  • New Playback menu with application-wide shortcuts for play, pause/resume, stop, next, previous, and "announce what is playing".
  • Enter adds the selected library track to the playlist, with shortcuts for adding to the start or end. Previously this was possible only through the right-click menu, which a Mac keyboard cannot produce.

Library

  • Track durations are detected reliably, using ffmpeg when exiftool is unavailable. Existing entries with a missing time are filled in automatically.
  • The music list shows readable column headers (Artist, Song, Published…) instead of raw database names.

Also fixed

  • The pause button no longer stays lit after skipping to another track.
  • "Install all dependencies" no longer reports a failure when everything installable is already present; MediaInfo installs on all platforms.
  • Programs downloaded from the server now reach the music library instead of failing silently.
  • The server sync scripts are found and packaged correctly on every platform.

Install / update

  • In-app: XFB 3.14159265 and older offer this update automatically at startup (or use Options → Check for updates).
  • macOS (Apple Silicon): brew upgrade --cask xfb (or brew install --cask netpack/xfb/xfb), or download XFB-3.141592653-macOS.dmg below.
  • Arch Linux: yay -Syu xfb (AUR, 3.141592653-1).
  • Debian/Ubuntu: download the .deb for your architecture below.
  • Windows: download XFB-3.141592653-Setup.exe (x64) or XFB-3.141592653-arm64-Setup.exe (ARM64) below.

Note for Windows users

XFB-3.141592653-64bit-Setup.exe and XFB-3.141592653-Setup.exe are the same x64 installer — either one works. The extra copy exists so that the in-app updater in 3.14159265 and earlier picks the correct installer for 64-bit Intel/AMD machines; those versions could otherwise download the ARM64 build, which does not run on an x64 PC. If that happened to you, simply run either x64 installer to repair the installation. ARM64 users should use XFB-3.141592653-arm64-Setup.exe.
