Content Ratings

Purpose

ImageHex is going to allow lots of images, including images generally considered not safe for work (or children). However, we also want to be a place where people of all ages (and sensibilities) can share art. As such, we need to be very careful when rating and predicting our images.

Overview

Images should be relegated into three tiers:

  1. Safe
  2. Iffy
  3. Unsafe

Iffy images include stuff like "tasteful nudity" and "sexual humor without anything visible." Safe images are safe for ages 13+, and does include images with swearing. Excessive swearing may make an image transmute itself to "iffy" if need be.

Tags need to also be divided into these tiers. We don't want somebody trying to find the "Cupertino" tag and getting back, uh, other things that start with "cu". The filter should be generic enough to allow this.

Users should also be able to specify tag-based filters, so if somebody has a (totally rational) hatred of Microsoft office, they never have to see any images with the software in it. These filters should be private by default, but optionally public so users can share their preferences with others. We also need to devise a set of default filters.
