When reporting a problem, please include your app version (shown in Settings → About) and what you were doing when it happened.
- Choose what to track. A new install starts empty. Go to Settings → Add from an illness and pick one — migraine, cold or flu, seasonal allergy, asthma, back pain, digestive discomfort, cancer treatment, low mood or anxiety, or a generic set. It creates the treatments and symptoms usually tracked for that illness.
- Report something. On the Report tab, choose Treatment or Symptom, tap the item, and press Save. The date defaults to today and the time to now, with one-tap shortcuts for 30 min / 1 h / 2 h ago. Treatments take an optional dose, symptoms an optional 1–5 severity.
- Look back. The History tab groups your entries by day over 7, 30 or 90 days or all time, with an overview chart of entries per day and average symptom severity.
- Share it. Settings → Export to PDF turns any period into a printable report you can hand to a doctor.
- Close it when it is over. Settings → Close this illness files the whole log away and starts you clean for whatever comes next. It stays readable under Settings → Closed illnesses.
Everything an illness creates is an ordinary treatment or symptom afterwards — rename it, recolour it, change its icon, or remove it.
Why is the Report tab empty when I first install the app? Nothing is created upfront, so you don't have to delete a list of things you don't take. Pick an illness in Settings → Add from an illness, or add items one at a time.
My illness isn't in the list. Open Settings → Add from an illness → More illnesses to download an extra list published on this wiki. If it still isn't there, pick Something else for a generic starting point and rename the items, or add your own from scratch — and tell us, so we can add it to the list.
Can I pick more than one illness? Yes. Picking a second one only creates what you don't already have, so two illnesses that share a symptom — a blocked nose, say — give you one of it, not two.
I renamed something. Will picking that illness again overwrite it? No. Your version is left exactly as you left it, including its colour and icon.
Why does the order of the chips change? The Report tab puts what you report most at the top, so your usual taps are in the first row. It re-ranks when you open the tab, never while you are filling a form in. Items you use equally often keep the order you set in Settings.
How do I stop offering something I no longer take, without losing its history? Open its list in Settings, swipe the row from the left and choose Hide. It disappears from the Report tab, and past entries stay readable. Swipe again to restore it.
Where is my data stored? On your device only, in the app's own storage. Nothing is uploaded — see the Privacy Policy.
Can I lock the app? Yes. Settings → Require Face ID (or Touch ID) is off by default. When on, the app locks whenever it goes to the background. It uses device-owner authentication, so your passcode always works as a fallback and a failed scan can never lock you out of your own log.
What does closing an illness do? Settings → Close this illness archives your current log behind a name and a date range, then empties the Report and History tabs so the next thing you track starts clean. Nothing is deleted: Settings → Closed illnesses reads it back, exports it as its own PDF, renames it or deletes it. On the way out you choose whether the treatments and symptoms you configured are kept for what comes next, or cleared with the illness.
What is the difference between "Delete all entries" and "Reset the app"? Delete all entries clears your current log and keeps both the treatments and symptoms you configured and anything you have already closed. Reset the app clears all of it — log, closed illnesses and configuration — and takes you back to the illness list, as if you had just installed it. Neither can be undone. Your privacy settings are kept either way.
Does the app go online? Only when you open More illnesses, to download the public list from this wiki. It sends nothing about you or your log — see the Privacy Policy.
Does Symptrace write to Apple Health? No. It neither reads from nor writes to the Health app.
What language is the app in? English, Spanish, Catalan, German, French, Italian and Portuguese, following your device language. The downloadable illness list carries the same seven.
Symptrace is free, with no ads and no tracking. If it saved you some time, a donation goes towards keeping it maintained:
