SECURITY_HARDENING_SUMMARY
Date: January 31, 2026 Status: ✅ COMPLETE - PRODUCTION READY
This document summarizes all security hardening measures implemented in nself-admin to achieve production-ready security standards.
- Production: 12+ characters with complexity (uppercase, lowercase, numbers, special chars)
- Development: 8+ characters (relaxed for testing)
-
Implementation:
/src/lib/auth-db.ts
- Login Rate Limit: 5 attempts per 15 minutes
- Account Lockout: After 10 failed attempts, 1 hour lockout
- Progressive Delay: Up to 5 seconds on repeated failures
-
Implementation:
/src/lib/rateLimiter.ts
- Storage: LokiJS database with TTL
- Duration: 7 days (default) or 30 days (remember me)
- httpOnly Cookies: XSS protection
- sameSite: strict: CSRF protection
- Secure flag: HTTPS only in production
- Session Refresh: CSRF token regeneration on refresh
- Token Generation: Web Crypto API (32 bytes)
- Validation: All POST/PUT/DELETE requests
- Constant-time Comparison: Timing attack prevention
- Session-based Tokens: CSRF token stored in session
- Origin Validation: Additional layer of protection
-
Implementation:
/src/lib/csrf.ts
-
Input Sanitization:
/src/lib/validation.ts -
Content Security Policy: Implemented in
next.config.mjs - React Auto-escaping: JSX automatically escapes output
- dangerouslySetInnerHTML: Limited use only
-
Parameterized Queries: Via nself CLI with
--jsonoutput - Input Validation: Zod schemas on all endpoints
- Query Length Limit: Max 10,000 characters
- Timeout Enforcement: 30-60 seconds configurable
- Dangerous Command Blocking: Production restrictions
-
Implementation:
/src/lib/validation.ts-validateSQLQuery()
-
execFile vs exec: All CLI calls use
execFilewith array arguments - No Shell Interpolation: Arguments passed as arrays
- Input Validation: Whitelist of allowed commands
- Argument Escaping: Safe shell argument handling
- Framework: Zod schemas
- Coverage: All API endpoints
-
Implementation:
/src/lib/validation.ts
- Auth endpoints: 5 requests / 15 min
- API endpoints: 100 requests / 15 min
- Heavy operations: 10 requests / 15 min
- Default Request: 1MB
- File Uploads: 10MB
- Config Files: 1MB
- Database Queries: 100KB
-
Implementation:
/src/lib/requestLimits.ts
Implemented in next.config.mjs:
X-DNS-Prefetch-Control: on
Strict-Transport-Security: max-age=63072000; includeSubDomains; preload
X-Frame-Options: DENY
X-Content-Type-Options: nosniff
X-XSS-Protection: 1; mode=block
Referrer-Policy: strict-origin-when-cross-origin
Permissions-Policy: camera=(), microphone=(), geolocation=(), interest-cohort=()
Content-Security-Policy: [strict policy]- Base Image: node:22-alpine (minimal attack surface)
- Multi-stage Build: Separate deps, builder, runner stages
- Standalone Mode: Only production files in final image
-
Resource Limits: CPU (2 cores), Memory (2GB) in
docker-compose.production.yml - Capability Dropping: Drop ALL, add only necessary
- No New Privileges: Enforced via security_opt
- Process Limits: Max 200 processes
- Health Checks: Automatic recovery
- Logging Limits: 10MB per file, 3 files max
-
Optional: Included in
docker-compose.production.yml(commented) - Most Secure: Tecnativa/docker-socket-proxy
- Prevents: Direct Docker socket access
-
Component:
/src/components/SessionTimeoutWarning.tsx - Warning Time: 5 minutes before expiration
- Actions: Extend session or logout
- Auto-refresh: Check every minute
Status: ✅ 0 VULNERABILITIES
Fixed vulnerabilities:
- Updated
nextfrom 16.1.4 → 16.1.6 (fixed 3 high severity CVEs) - Updated
tarfrom 7.5.6 → 7.5.7 (fixed high severity CVE) - Updated
mdast-util-to-hast(fixed moderate severity CVE)
Command:
pnpm audit
# Result: 0 vulnerabilities-
Storage: LokiJS
auditLogcollection - Retention: 30 days with automatic TTL
- Events Logged:
- Authentication attempts (success/failure)
- Session operations (create, refresh, revoke)
- Password changes
- Security events (rate limits, CSRF failures)
- NEVER logged: Passwords, tokens, session IDs
- Sanitized: All user input before logging
- Hashed only: Password hashes stored, never plaintext
- Production: Generic error messages ("Authentication failed")
- No Stack Traces: Never exposed to client
- Details in Logs: Full errors logged server-side
- Consistent Format: Standard error response structure
